Reviewed June 29, 2013

Firstly I will start by saying we were not even booked for this hotel - we had booked the Planamar but on arrival there we were told we could not stay there and were sent to the Olympic! We were not informed in advance of this and we were very unhappy to be moved especially as the reviews at the Planamar were vastly improved!
We are assuming HTop over book on a regular basis and feel it is acceptable to move customers with no warning - HTop - if you bother to read these reviews take notice - it is NOT ok to do this!
So onto the hotel itself - the hotel is very dated and needs a refurb.
The food was just about passable but it reminded me of school dinners!
It has to be the worst 3 star all inclusive we have ever stayed at. The pool area however was fine.
The major negative point I would have to stress is their ridiculous card system for drinks - it was far too restrictive. You could not even ask for a double! The hotel chain used the excuse of the number of plastic cups that were being wasted - what a load of rubbish!! The only reason I could see for this was so they can monitor exactly how much customers are drinking.
The positive aspect of the hotel is its location to some good quality restaurants - we can recommend Les Caves and the Uruguayan restaurant. We would definitely suggest taking some extra money and visiting these.
We would return to Calella but not to this or any other HTop hotel!

I have never reviewed a hotel before but I felt that I had to!
My boyfriend and I booked this hotel and after reading alot of reviews on here, we were very worried but decided to look on the holiday as you dont really stay in the hotel too much. Our experience was very pleasant and I cannot say anything bad about the hotel. Some points I want to make:

Reception - people mentioned the rude staff and bad check in service. Staff were very friendly and we were checked in within minutes. We booked excursions through reception staff and they were extremely helpful and polite. Although very busy, we were checked out within 5 minutes!

Rooms - very clean, maids were there cleaning every day. All rooms have a balcony and yeah they are a bit small but totally suffice for purpose with very comfortable beds. I read that some people complained about TV's being in spanish... erm, you are in Spain and we actually found BBC and ITV. Everything was in working order and we had everything we needed for our stay.

Food - people said about lack of choice. Breakfast, cooked breakfasts, pastries, cereals, eggs, omelettes and champagne. What more does anyone else want? Lunch and dinner, plenty of choice and there was themed food nights such as Spanish and italian nights. With every meal there was always plenty of choice of fresh salads, fruit and pasta. In between courses, there was always salads and pastas available with hotdogs, burgers and chips. What more do people need? all the food was cooked fine, plenty of choice and we never went hungry. My partner is in the hospitality industry and was pleasantly surprised.

Drinks policy. Never had an issue with this and queued for maybe 5 minutes max for a drink. Great choice and bar men were extremely friendly and joking around with you. This is contrary to what I read. Yes you can only get locally branded drinks in the all inclusive policy but this was more than acceptable for us. We had cocktails, locally produced wine which was lovely and beer. Again, what else do other people want on holiday?

Entertainment - we went out at night but managed to catch a glimpse of this and they always had some sort of entertainment on for kids from 9pm and for adults from 10pm. There was also poolside activites for kids during the day.

Location - excellent! 5 minutes walk from the beach.

Overall out stay was really enjoyable from 19th-26th June and the hotel was extremely busy but staff were always polite and helpful. There is a shop on site and its very reasonably priced. The pool areas are kept clean and I would recommend this hotel. Yes they do have alot of groups of students but we had no issue with these causing noise at nights and my partner is a very light sleeper so we would have heard them.

Calella is a beautiful town with alot to do and an amazing beach. There is no PR's and no "looky looky people" at all. This is a first for me! Calella also has alot of Spanish on holiday which speaks for iteself really. It also has alot of russian, german and swedish people and very little irish or british (some people on trip advisor actually complained about this!) but I liked mixing with other personalities and cultures, it made for a more interesting holiday.

We will go back. If you book and are worried, I'd say wait until you get there to judge for yourself

Room Tip: We were on 7th floor and had no issues with noice so I'd say go to the top and ask for a mountai...

After reading recent reviews for this place we were a bit worried. 23 women going on a five day break looking for a cheap all inclusive holiday. We were all booked in as four in a room. Rooms pretty small and we were a bit cramped but we dealt with it in the best way possible. Drink system was frustrating as its a card system. But again not a major issue. The food was getting terrible reviews but we can honestly say that we all loved the food and anyone that couldn't find something to eat here has to be a pretty fussy eater! The variety of food was great with a great choice of salads and then plenty of hot food to choose from. As soon as a dish was finished it was replaced quickly. Three pools at hotel and we choose to use the smaller ones at front of hotel as they got the sun all day. Hotel was clean and the maids were in on a daily basis making beds and changing towels. Only downsides were that the hotel was packed with hundreds of teenagers on school breaks so was pretty noisy. The other thing was that the hotel did not warn us of a recent spate of muggings goings in calella and unfortunately one of our group were mugged on the first night. But overall we had a great holiday and as others say you get what you pay for so don't always go by the reviews you read

Unfortunately, we were moved by the travel company from H-Top Planamar, which has decent reviews, to the awful Oympic, which looked shabby and cheap even from the outside.

When we arrived, the screaming children at the pool made the whole thing unbearable - and they never stopped, except at night, since their parents were quite indifferent to their behaviour. Rooms were too little and smelly, the mirror on the opposite wall was almost touching the beds, the balcony was unsafe and odd. The hotel looked like a dubious one star hostel, with little space to move on the corridors, plenty of young people who were loud and inconsiderate towards other guests, and insufficient staff (the maid only arrived in our room to change the towels at about 3 p.m., after exhausting herself with another 50 rooms or so).
Food was however more than acceptable and the staff at the restaurant was friendly and funny (the only good point, perhaps). I suppose other guests were unhappy with the hotel too, and I wonder why people keep on going there at all, despite the negative reviews.
If you wish to have a really unpleasant experience on the coastal Spain, do go to the H-Top Olympic hotel in Calella and you won t be disappointed!!!!

My husband and i stayed at this hotel for a week 7th -14th June all inclusive. (we are twenty-somethings)
As the title explains you get exactly what you pay for! We went for a cheap deal and expected not the 5* Hilton but an average 3* Hotel. We were more than satisfied with what we got, yes on arrival to our room we were tempted to pay more to upgrade to the Calella Palace which was next door or the Ameika which was a short strol away (towards the beach). But after staying there for one night we decided to just stay, first impressions were fine, yes the hotel is a bit outdated and rough looking in areas, but it was perfectly fine for our stay!
The pool area was fine with a poolside bar, sunbeds were always available even thorugh the hotel can accomodate lots of people, the food was average but totally acceptable and we never went hungry! The drinks, although the all inclusive was local brands only, still was satisfactory. The area in which the hotel is located is super, you can get to the beach in less than a 5 minute stroll and the same to get to the main part of the town where there are a number of bars, restaurants, a couple of night clubs and even a MacDonalds for those who need home comforts! The area is also a bit more 'local' for Spanish and there are no "lucky lucky men" bothering you or people trying to get you in their pubs/restaurants. It's a very relaxed town although still with a bit of a night scene for the more young travellers.
We would probably sum up the hotel as being a bit like a Spanish Butlins overall, with a cheesy entertainment room with cheesy entertainment on an evening (bit like a working mens club!!), even comparing it to the tv show "Benidorm" on one ocassion, but nothing I would like to complain about.
Like I previously said, you get what you pay for and we totally expected it to be cheap and cheerful and not like a 5* Hilton, and that it was!
We had some super nights out and I cannot complain about anything, other than the paper thin walls! Although a bit of toilet roll in my ears on a night simply did it for me - or the consumption of alcohol!!!! ;-)

All in all those that put that this hotel is the pits are wrong, you can only expect to get what you pay for.

Room Tip: Walk down to the Calella train station (about 10 mins walk) and purchase a return ticket to Barcelon...

This is a cheap holiday so that is what you get. The hotel is very very basic you can hear everything in the room next door and also in the bathroom no insulations in the rooms. the rooms are clean with towles changed daily sheets not changed for the whole week . Our room was cleaned 5 out of 7 days. The food is basic breakfast is eggs bacon beanS crossonts fresh fruit bread. lunch always has chips some kind of meat and fish with salads and fruit and dessert. Dinner kinda the same with a few differences. Alot of the staff are ok but there are a few who are very very rude for no reason . i think maybe they are really over worked .. it is a huge hotel with i would imagine over 1000 people in it so i bet the pressure is on. Some good entertainment in the evening on one or two occasion. Drinks have a big back glass policy to get a refill not a great idea. i would never go back here because of the food , the rude staff and because its all inculsive and there is drinking all day the police came 5 days out of the 7 nights to the hotel to break up fight and to cart off the offenders. Two womens bags were stolen and a lady mugged walking home at night . The area i found to be ok the beach is beautiful and would go back to that area not that hotel. we had to ask for the managers on a few occasions to report staff really rellay rude in the bar . pay a little extra for a nicer experenance .look you make the holiday what it is yourself but this is not for me defo .

Room Tip: there are no good rooms

Quick check by efficient receptionist. We ordered picnics, booked the H Top bus for lunch in Loret De Mar & early morning calls and everything was dealt with - no problem at all. Bang on. All cleaners work very hard to keep the hotel clean and bearing in mind there are sometimes over a 1,000 guests this is to their credit.

Room seemed small at first but got used to it and certainly no funny smells. Shower was hot and worked well. We were on the 7th (top floor) and once the double glazing was closed the noise was minimal. Just a bit of noise from late party goers or people arriving/going.

Hotel staff mostly very nice especially the catering division. The food was presented very well and believe me there was always something that even the fussiest of eaters would enjoy. Always check the chef near the kitchen as he cooks to order. Ask if you have any special diet requirements - they are very helpful. The Tex Mex Spanish night on Saturday was especially good and they went to a lot of trouble with huge amounts of quality food. The head chef was very grateful to receive my thanks. One thing that bothered me was guests taking far too much food and leaving it. Not only leaving it but left the table in a disgrace. Cutlery all over the place, food on the table, etc. and then not bother to put their chairs back under the table. One woman put a plate of food that was big enough for a giant in front of her toddler.

The bar staff blow hot and cold. The young Glass collector / pot washers were very friendly and efficient but a couple of the chaps behind the bar could be moody and quick to tell you off if you didn't hand in the correct cards and stuff!! I was told off more than once!! The entertainment was satisfactory for the guests that wanted to be entertained. The Spanish dancers & guitarist were absolutely amazing.

Hotel is perfectly situated - close to railway, shops, beach.

If you go to the beach early evening you can enjoy the last of the rays at Blue Bar with a beer or g & t.!! Prices even with 50% off a little high but worth it.

All in all for all their effort I think the hotel is worth their 3 stars.
