We have just returned from 10 days at the Miami Park Aparthotel and had a very nice holiday. The price of the apartment was very reasonable and we hardly spent any time in the room so it really doesn’t matter that it wasn’t the nicest room in the world – you get what you pay for!
On arriving at the aparthotel we were pleasantly surprised with the lobby area, its looks more like a hotel than an apartment block. The reception staff were great and very friendly and helpful. The lobby has a comfortable seating area (excellent to sit at when using the free wifi) and a block of 4 PCs to use the internet (€1 for 20 mins). The bar is close to the pool and has a small seating area, although the only time we saw it full was when the Flamenco show was on. There is also a breakfast area that serves a buffet breakfast for €7 (although we never tried this). The bar serves food that can be eaten by the pool, it was €3 for a pint, €1,60 a half, €1,70 for a coke, €6,75 for a bacon sandwich & chips – the same price as everywhere else.
The pool area has plenty of sunbeds, although no umbrellas for shade but it does have a seating area that is completely shaded. There was also a little hut that cooked hot dogs and chicken on a rotisserie but we only saw it staff twice in our 10 days. The main pool is quite small with a depth of 2.4m (so don’t sit on the sunbeds close to the pool unless you want to get splashed with the kids jumping in) and has a kids pool. The nice thing was that when people had purchased inflatables and left them behind, they were kept behind the food hut so the kids could just help themselves to whatever inflatables were available.
There was entertainment every night, although most nights this was a cheesy disco (superman, music man, agadoo etc). There are a number of activities that the hotel runs on the beach for kids – the foam fest is highly recommended!
We were on the ground floor in a 1 bedroomed apartment. The first thing that struck me was that there was no privacy. The kids slept on the sofa which pulled out into 2 single beds but all we had to separate us from them was a plastic folding door that had a big gap above it and they had to walk though our ‘room’ to get to the bathroom (see photos). The bathroom was small but had everything we needed. The shower was actually quite deceptive because it looked like it was going to trickle water out but it was actually really powerful and with plenty of hot water! The bathroom had a hairdryer affixed to the wall and even though it was an apartment there was soap, shower gel & shampoo in little packets on the shelf.
Our ‘room’ was 2 single beds pushed together and had the wardrobe (and safe) built into the wall. The kitchen consisted of 2 hobs, a fridge, sink, bin, toaster, kettle and plenty of cups, plates, cutlery and utensils. There was a dining table to seat 4 people, a TV and the sofa bed in the main room. As we were on the ground floor, our balcony overlooked the pool area which was great when one of us was in the room as we could pass drinks over the balcony to the other person. The air con wasn’t great, despite being on full blast. I don’t think the room was cleaned well before we arrived as the first time I took my shoes off I kept stepping on bits of sand, stones etc but nothing a quick sweep up didn’t fix. We had fresh towels most days and the beds were changed once.
The hotel was quite noisy at night. Every night we got woken up by someone shouting down the corridor at 4am but you can’0 blame the hotel, thats the fault of the morons who have no consideration for others.
The hotel was about a 5 min walk to the beach and 5 mins to the first of the shops/restaurants but the heart of Calella was about a 15/20min walk. If you want to go to England in the sun then don’t go to Calella because there wasn’t many English bars – for me, this was perfect! There was hardly any high rise hotels and most places were traditional Spanish buildings. There were plenty of shops and restaurants although all the restaurants seemed to have the same choice of food so if you like chicken, steak, pizza, spaghetti bolognaise, frankfurters then this is the place for you. I like all of those choices but after 10 days of it, I really didn’t want to look at another plate of chicken & chips. On average our meals out were between €40-50 for 2 adults, 2 kids for a main course and a drink each.
The resort is dated but it has what you need. If you want to go to a busy metropolis then spend some more money and go to a bigger resort. As far as cheap holidays go, I’ve just had a great 10 days relaxing by the pool of Miami Park!
