Just returned after a week at the Barcelo. On a positive note, excellent location and friendly reception staff, rooms clean.
Negatives, having to queue up at breakfast to get your tea or coffee from a machine is not 4 star service. We stayed at this hotel a few years ago when it was the Atlantis Palace, service was much better then. Breakfast was ok although i don't like sprouts from the night before with my scrambled egg! Evening meals were bland and dried up ate out a couple of nights. Lack of waiters as the ones they have are rushing about having to clear too many tables, meaning that your plates pile up on the side inbetween each course. Rules state men must NOT wear shorts for evening meal, 60% of men took no notice of this. It really doesnt matter to me if a guy has shorts on but it is meant to be a rule!
Entertainment very poor.
I had booked a Wellness Superior room, it was the same as a standard room with a sofa, wouldnt bother paying the extra again, we got a day into the wellness centre, some soft drinks in the fridge and slippers and robe! not worth the extra. I had asked for a high floor room with pool view but got 1st floor over looking the reception area, not good. I was told they had not had my request, but this i be true as my travel agent told them we were celebrating our wedding anniversary and we did get a bottle of champagne with a note wishing us a happy anniversary, this was with the same request for the room we wanted, I dont understand when i read some people have had good upgrades! Airconditioning is very poor in bedrooms.
I enjoyed this hotel twice before prior to it becoming the Barcelo and was disappointed, wouldnt stay again which is a shame because it is in a lovely spot.

Room Tip: Don't expect 4 star service

My husband and I stayed for 2 weeks in September 2013 half board. We had a great holiday but a few things could have been better. First the positive, room was a good size and very nicely decorated, most comfortable hotel bed I have every slept in, two 3/4 beds pushed together, they did separate a bit but not really a problem. Bathroom had two sinks and good shower though the bath could do with changing there was always plenty of hot water. We had fridge, kettle with tea coffee coco etc. which was always replenished. The room was kept very clean with towels changed daily and sheets regularly, the maids were very pleasant and efficient as were all the staff. The whole hotel was very clean and appeared to be well run, when we had a problem with the door handle it was dealt with promptly. We had a pool view room with two comfortable chairs/ loungers and foot rests on the balcony . The pool area was nice, the smaller pool was the warmest. There were plenty of sun loungers but quite a few were in the shade for much of the day, there were not enough sun umbrellas(as usual) so there was a rush each morning to get bed and brolly in the sun. Breakfast was fine, maybe not as much choice as in larger hotel but the quality was good, eggs cooked to your liking (you only had to ask) pre cooked food could have been hotter but was changed regularly and something for everyone! only complaint was fresh fruit was, apart from melon, never ripe. Evening dinner was not so great, little variety on salad bar or vegetables but food was tasty. Show cooked fish every night and if you didn't want any from the warming dish just point to the one you want from the cooking plate. There were always 5 or 6 or more choices of main dish with two meats from the show cook grill, problem was steak and chicken fillets were tough, not 4* standard, this was my main gripe. Having said all that food was very tasty and there was always something we enjoyed. Evening entertainment was not the best but we preferred to go out anyway, lots of good bars nearby with live music or quiet whichever you prefer. We would go back to this hotel again but would hope that the quality of the meat improves.

Room Tip: Any pool view should be good. We had room 2011 ( there are only 3 floors) which was fine. We had the sun from lunchtime onwards.

I would have to agree with some of the previous reviews that the hotel is a little dated and the bathrooms need a revamp. The staff were both friendly and efficient. Breakfast was very good but the evening meals were becoming boring after ten days. Bed was two singles pushed together which was not great. Pool area is very good and although people are allowed to claim a sunbed by putting a towel down and queue at 8.30 to do so, they don't seem to swim much so pools are never crowded. If you go to Corralejo the beaches at the dunes are excellent and a free bus goes from the hotel. Free gym and tennis available as well as other activities such as scuba in small pool, yoga, meditation, quiz and Spanish language.
We enjoyed our stay but the bed issue would preclude a return.

Room Tip: We were in 2131 which faces the town and gets sun from about one o'clock, noise from the town bars would be a problem until about 11,30.

The attention to detail with this hotel and what the Thomas Cook brochure offers needs to be reviewed. As the gentleman from Kent mentions the AI on the drinks does close at 23.00 so you then have to pay. We had a Wellness room which we had paid for and was given an upgrade with a room with a jacuzzi but the problem is we had to ask for the in room tea, coffee etc to the replenished on four occasions, they never cleaned the balcony and they didn't meet some of the additional items as stated in the brochure. The pool bar lunch time meals we stated as a la carte which it certainly wasn't. The main meals including breakfast were nothing to write home about so my scoring for all meals would be a 6. The sun bed issue was evident every morning and it was obvious that their were not enough beds for the amount of people in the hotel. They have a seperate upper sun deck but again it is an additional charge. If you visit this hotel please be aware it is not all it appears, one good thing though, no kids!

Room Tip: The complex is in a horse shoe so at some point in the day you will get some sun. They do upgrades but are expensive.

I stayed here for a week over Easter and all in all had a lovely time. The staff were lovely and checked us in very quickly. The room was nice. The buffet breakfast was amazing, Pool is nicely set out and there are no screaming kids which was what we were looking for. These are the good points.

I thought the hotel was a little tired and could do with a bit of a revamp, this is by no means a massive problem though. The room we had was just as you came out of reception and it was very loud. In the mornings we heard everyone getting out with luggage and all the cleaning, at night we heard every single person that passed our door, this hotel does not get a loud/boisterous clientele so you can imagine how bad the noise could have been. My other issue was that the beds were two single beds pushed together, this isn't usually a problem, but for some reason the mattress kept slipping from the bottom and inevitably by morning I had practically killed myself!

If you want a child free holiday this is for you. Seriously though get a taxi the bus is a nightmare!

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet one!
