Reviewed by someone who has stayed in a rubbish 1* dive in Spain to 5* luxury in Crete so I know the difference in hotels. I am 32 years old and went to OP with my wife of the same age.
When we arrived at the hotel we were greeted with a lovely receptionist who gave us maps and some other information (good start). Found the room, it was near the bottom of the complex but seeing as we’re fit and able people it wasn’t an issue.
The room was a decent size for two, separate living area from the bedroom, big bathroom, mini kitchen, and terrace. All was fairly clean, usual dust under the bed but nothing awful.
We had a couple of issues with the shower (head fell off the wall and the lack of hot water) these were reported to the reception and these were both fixed pretty quickly. Also had a bulb out on the terrace, again reported to the reception and this was fixed within 30 mins. No bug problems, we had a few ants on the terrace but after quick spray from some nuclear stuff that was in the room they all disappeared. You had to pay for the TV, but seeing as i'm on holiday I never bothered with it.
This was as expected really, buffet food… Just average, but I didn’t really expect 5* Michelin food. Breakfast was ok, Lunch was the best meal of the day, Dinner was average again but what can the hotel do when they’re catering for hundreds of people over a 3 hour period. The soft drinks was diluting juice and was pretty horrible, the fizzy drink concentrate hadn’t been mixed very well either but I stuck to the beer which was ok. My wife found it hard to drink many things as it was either too strong or diluted incorrectly but it’s not the end of the world.
Pretty awful to be honest, I suppose they're limited with what they can do. I can’t speak for the kid’s entertainment as we didn’t have anything to do with that but I never saw a glum face.
5 swimming pools, is more than enough for any hotel – we never once had an issue getting a lounger and a shade, the pool at the bottom of the resort was better as it was quieter and had fewer kids. The kids pool at the bottom of the complex looked good though it was separate from the main pool and was only a foot deep, parents only needed to keep one eye on them (from my limited child experience).
I know people go to an all inclusive hotel expecting pure luxury and everything free, and when it’s not up to their expectation then it gets a bad review which in turn puts people off. I know I was nearly put off myself, but I booked a cheap holiday and I definitely got my money’s worth. We didn’t like the entertainment so we walked the 20 mins down the road into the town and went to a few bars where there were loads of live bands on (go to Rock Island, cracking live acoustic sessions – watch out for a guy called Wayne Brennan who’s plays on a Tuesday and Sunday, one of the best guitar players I’ve seen!). You obviously have to pay for drinks but with the all inclusive finishing at 11pm it's a good option so after your meal you can walk into town, anyway you get fed up of drinking small beers out of plastic cups plus my wife could get a decent cocktail. We also ate out twice, as buffet food does get samey - we paid €35 for a main course and pudding each got a free bottle of house wine and a Flamenco show. A taxi back to the hotel was only €4.
The beach is a fair trek away, it didn’t look too far on the map – 40 mins walking in the baking sun isn’t recommended but it was worth it as the views from the beach are pretty good. There is a frequent bus service or get a taxi.
Everyone has a different holiday experience, we had a good one and I’d probably go back.
