“Nice Hotel, Excellent Service but apartments could do with a refresh”
Reviewed November 19, 2013

Stayed in the Olivia Beach resort 30th October - 6th November, booked with Thomson. We stayed in the appartments in the "annexe" area of the resort which was like a mini village a few minutes walk from the main hotel building. Upon arrival (at 9pm) we were told that we were to have late dinner at 10pm and could drop off our bags etc in the meantime. We arrived at our apartment and couldn't believe the size of it - massive! A living area with a fridge then upstairs to a bedroom, bathroom and wardrobe. The only down side was that it was in need of refurbishment. The room was arranged with twin beds however upon asking reception it was quickly rearranged to a double bed configuration. We returned for dinner at 10 to be served with a cold salad plate - was hoping for something a little more substantial.

We spent most days relaxing by the hotel pool between taking part in the various activities run by the including french bowls, shooting etc. I was usually the only British person taking part and seemed to be more popular with the German speaking tourists but it was fine! The poolside snack bar had the usual selection of burgers, hot dogs, pizza, toasties etc which were average most drinks were self-service with the exception of cocktails. The beach was really impressive but we only popped out of the resort to use it.

The evening entertainment was mainly held in the main stage where there was a nightly show performed by the animation team. We found some it a bit hit and miss - a couple of good shows but we also left part way through a couple of them.

There were 2 buffet style restaurants on site - we used them for breakfast and dinner most of the time. The food was reasonably good and was impressed with the amount of cooking stations. Even fried eggs were cooked in front of you! We ate in the mandarin restaurant one evening hoping it would be something a little nicer, however it was really just glorified buffet - we still had to help ourselves to all the food and the quality was about the same as the buffet restaurant, on that basis we didnt book to eat in the other restaurant (canarian).

The drinks were good however sometimes quite strong! Decent selection of cocktails on the menu and the bar staff were happy to make people custom cocktails as long as the ingredients were available. The beer was ok.

The hotel was kept quite clean at all times and we would regularly see staff cleaning during the day. The pool toliets were sometimes a bit smelly though but nothing worse than experienced elsewhere.

We visited Corralejo town a couple of times, lots of bars and shops and a nice harbour area. Bus is 1.60 Euro and takes about 10 minutes. We got a taxi back one evening after staying out for food and drinks one evening and it cost about 7 Euro.

Normally we would do an organised trip round the area however on this occasion I thought I'd be a bit more adventurous - I hired a car and drove round several of Fuerteventura's landmarks - Pajara (where we lunched), Ajuy where theres the islands only black sanded beach and the impressive Betancuria National Park - a driving experience in itself round its mountain track - just watch out for the squirrels if you stop to admire the scenery!

Overall a good trip. I'd definitely visit Fuerteventura again in the autumn and I'd probably stay in the hotel again.

The location of this hotel is outstanding with a great beach and dune area.
we had a room in the man block which was fairly small but the beds were very comfortable, the room did its job very well. the view was stunning from the balcony.
the food was OK at best, we were only there for a week and it was pretty much the same day in day out with minor variations.
the entertainment was OK, the dancers tried very hard but it was still a bit corny.
in general the staff were as they are in other Riu hotels we have stayed in, very helpful, polite and professional.
a trip down town is a must for a meal while there, there is a great Chinese called Asian Garden and another worth a visit is Waikiki.
Glad we went but would not return.

Have just returned from a two week break. Hotel has an excellent position on the large sandy beach and dunes. Sunbeds 3 euros each and the same for a brolly, could be expensive for a family.Pool areas can get very crowded and you may find you have to work your way around the sunbeds. Towels are out from 5am in spite of the hotel requesting guests not to do it. Food not the best, but o.k., very boring after one week. Staff very friendly and helpful, all areas very clean but looking a bit tired. Air con switched off even though it was still very hot, had to keep balcony doors open for a breeze but could not sleep due to late night drinkers by the pool, moved on by security at 2am after complaints. All in all a pleasant hotel for a short cheap break.

Room Tip: If staying in the main hotel, be sure to have a pool facing room nearest to the beach, wonderful vie...

Beach and dunes by the hotel are excellent, although you have to pay 9 euro for sunbeds and parasol per day and cannot take food/drinks from hotel onto beach. This was not a problem for us as we filled a couple of bottles of water each day at Breakfast. You can also rent a kettle for your room for 10 euro per week which saves all the messing about smuggling cups to your room every morning. The food was nice and we thought there was a decent variety. Very clean throughout and our room (we stayed in the annex) was spacious, clean and beds were comfortable and it was very peaceful. There seemed a lot for kids to do so great place for families. Staff were very friendly and helpful so all in all a good hotel but very big. Be warned though, Corralejo is the windiest resort in Fuerteventura.

The guests were majority German holiday makers, hardly any English (less than 10%) and very popular with the older generation, although they were in good spirits and not at all grumpy. We felt young in our early forties. Evening entertainment not great but it never is at these large hotels.

Room Tip: ask for room in annex away from restaurant if you want quiet room.

Just returned from a week's stay at this hotel. Like many other clients have said this is a 1970's tower block. However, it is in a fantastic location on the beach with there being only one other hotel close by - another Riu.

Upon arrival we were given a duplex in the annexe. Initially it seemed nice to have all the extra space however, after a nights sleep we realised that we didn't like the bedroom which was in the roof of the duplex, with no windows to look out, it was very claustrophobic with limited side space to put our things. The bathroom was shabby and the bath and shower curtain was absolutely filthy. Yes there was a lounge and dining table downstairs but we could see that we wouldn't use this and it would be a pain running up and down stairs to get things. The Duplex are probably for families as the sofa converts to a bed. However, there is only one bathroom in the duplex - which could be problematical for a large family. Also it was very shabby outside the Duplex with piles of broken sunbeds, parasols and general rubbish!!

Reception were very accommodating and quickly moved us into a room within the hotel on the 2nd floor with a fantastic sea view with what looked like a newly refurbished bathroom. For us we were much happier here.

A couple of minor complaints the beds were very soft and my husband suffered a bad back ache as a result. The air conditioning is not on at this hotel in what they consider to be the winter months - even though it was 20 degrees most nights. There was a ceiling fan in the bedroom but this wasn't really enough and some nights we didn't sleep so well because of the heat.

The food was fresh and plentiful and we always found something to eat. Yes it was repetitive but only being there for a week this didn't bother us. The Chinese restaurant was only open Thursday to Sunday (you have to book 1 day in advance) so we never got to eat there and the Canarian restaurant looked the same as the buffet.

Alcohol was local brands but was OK and not watered down. The wine in the restaurant was disgusting but we noticed that people were buying their own from supermarkets and taking to their table in the buffet. We did the same. The waiters did not have any issue with this.

The only place that you can get a freshly made Cafe con Leche (Coffee) is at the Pool bar after 10.30am. For a Spanish Hotel we thought this to be very bad form. The Coffee out of the machines was disgusting as it tasted very sweet, which is fine if you take sugar but if you don't it's not so good.

The gym was very shabby. One of the two bikes was broken, the rowing machine was broken and there was only one pin for 3 weight machines. After 10 minutes of trying to unsuccessfully work out I decided that it wasn't worth the hassle and went for a run instead.

We hired a car and toured the island. There isn't really very much to see and you can reach the capital of Puerto Rosario within 45 minutes by car. There is a new shopping centre there but it is not open on Sunday's.

Corralejo is a picturesque fishing village with the usual shops carrying tourist souvenirs. There is a lovely little beach and it is nice to sit at one of the restaurants and have a drink or coffee and enjoy the view. There is a bus from outside the hotel which goes into Corralejo.. If you like walking like us we walked back one day and it took around an hour.

The beaches in Fuerteventura are really lovely, compared to other Canary Islands however, it can be very windy and the sea was too rough for us to go into on most days that we were there. If you walk down the beach for 10 minutes there is a nudist area which didn't bother us but you might like to be warned if you are going with young children. We never had a problem with sun beds around the pool. There are ample sun terraces. However, I don't think the hotel was full. The pool is a very old rectangular design however, it was very clean and well maintained. The pool at the annexe was equally as nice.

Didn't see any of the evening entertainment so cannot comment on this. There were lots of activities going on during the daytime.

The water aerobics was average along with the step aerobics. A couple of the women instructors didn't really seem to know what they were doing but the guy instructor was more knowledgeable.

For us it was a quick cheap week away and it fulfilled our expectations. It is a 3 star rated hotel but I think in all honesty it is nearer to a 4 star.

Some people have commented that the reception staff were rude - we never experienced this they were more than helpful and very pleasant and polite. Would we return to this hotel - definitely if we got the chance of a cheap week away like we have just had.

Enjoy

Room Tip: We had room 224 which had a lovely sea view.

had a 1 week stay in November, stayed at the annex, better than the hotel I think, spacious rooms.
Food was good and also the staff, especialle Angeles at the annex restauranrt.
Didnt pay any attention at the entertainment, so cant judge that.
The Island isnt very special, volcano landscape, 1 day by car and you seen all.
Would recommend to everyone.

After following this hotel for 6 months on trip advisor i had mixed views about what to expect but I needn't have worried.......

Fantastic holiday from start to finish. Quick check in..... Stayed in the Apartments, spacious clean rooms.... Beds are a little hard but no bed is as comfortable as your own...... Right?!? Food is lovely.... Yes maybe a bit repetitive but always something to have and was very tasty. All the staff work extremely hard & are very friendly & helpful. Evening entertainment a bit cheesy but well worth an hour of your evening to watch them. The grease show was fab. Drinks are lovely..... There was just nothing to complain about. The location is perfect, beach is gorgeous. I would defiantly without a shadow of a doubt return to this hotel sometime in the future. I would recommend this hotel to everyone.
