If you consider learning to surf, go to Fuerteventura and take some lessons at The Aloha Surf Academy. Alex, the instructor, is a certified surf instructor and a professional beach life guard. But above all, he is a passionate waterman and a brilliant surfer. He speaks and teaches effortlessly in five or six languages. If you are taking lessons, you want the right advice, but as a beginner or intermediate wave hog, most probably you’ll be more at ease - which is pretty important as a learner - knowing that someone competent stands ready to pull you out of the water if you get in trouble. Alex knows the ocean and he knows what he is doing. He is very easy going, extremely patient and somewhat amazingly notices all the goods and bads of your performance in the water. From what I saw in Fuerta, most surf schools have an industrial approach to surf teaching. They take out 12+ persons. Not so with with Aloha Surf Academy. They only take smaller groups (apart from offering individual lessons etc). If you get the chance to see how it works with 12+ people trying to handle their boards in the white water, you realize that being a small group not only optimizes your progress, it is also much safer. Sophie, who takes care of the administrative side of things, showed great friendliness, professionalism and allowed all the flexibility I needed in booking lessons from day to day. The Aloha Surf Academy should be your preferred choice of surf school in the Canaries.

Go surf - Morten P.

Me and my partner are beginners and decided to try the one day taster session.
We were picked up from our hotel and driven to a cafe first to have the introduction which lasted about an hour. The pace was very leisurely if not a bit too much. The introduction/ risk assessment appeared a bit irrelevant especially as he explained about rip currents when he told us afterwards the beach we were going to didn't have one. I felt bad for the other three who had done days before this and had to listen to it all again.
He gave us lessons on how to stand up however I struggled on land so it wasn't going to be promising in the water. I didn't find the method as easy as I was taught in a one day taster session in Barbados - even if it is the proper way.
We stopped for lunch / snacks for 30 mins. NOTE: bring lots of food and water! It is a long day and it the email he just said snacks which wasn't enough when you are out from 10-5.
We then returned to surfing - I stopped for a rest towards the end because it was exhausting. It was great fun however it does tire you out lots! We were both in bed by 10!
The instructor was very friendly and spoke every language. We would recommend.
I think he struggles for being the only instructor when there are varying levels of expertise however he does watch constantly and advise you from the sand what you should try to do through out the whole time which is good.

We have just returned from our holiday in Corralejo. Our two teenage sons aged 16 and 14 had 6 days of surf lessons and enjoyed them very much. This is the second time they have surfed with Aloha.

Alex is an excellent instructor, and thank you Sophie for keeping us informed of surf times and locations.

Highly recommended

The best surf school in Fuerteventura by far..Alex is a great instructor, pro and truly passionate.
We did a week course back in April of 2013 and everything was perfect, the location, surf baords wet suits and the patience of Alex to teach us the right gestures, etc.
If you have the time ask him to take you to Los Lobos a fantastic and powerful wave hititng the small island in front of Corralejo..
