“Just plain awful!!”
Reviewed April 21, 2010

My family and I occasionally splurge a bit in the winter and visit a local hotel just to swim. This hotel is very local, but not worth the money! The pool is too small to barely move around, the hotel employees were extremely rude, and the location of the hotel is extremely loud (considering the other hotel options in this area.) Even though this hotel is only about a seven minute drive, from now on when we want the luxury usually associated with Holiday Inn I think we will travel the extra 50 or so miles.

We recently spent one night at the Norton Holiday Inn and it was very nice. The smoke in the hallways is from smoking rooms, not a fire. VA will implement a NO Smoking in any Hotels rule in a couple months and that should no longer be a problem. Room was clean and inviting and bathroom was nice. Interestingly enough we stopped early in the day and were told they had one room left and the AARP rate was $95. We left to investigate another property which turned out to be awful (Mountain High Lodge) and returned later. The rate was $75-maybe because it was later in the day?

This hotel is brand new and is extremely clean. The rooms are spacious and well maintained. The problem however is that there is a Restaurant/Lounge on the 5th floor. On Friday night they had a band playing until 2 a.m. in the morning. If you were on the wrong side of the hotel, then you had this music blasting in your room all night. To put it in perspective we were on the 2nd floor.

The next night was a DJ that went until 1 a.m. It seems like the popular thing to do is to go up to the restaurant, party, and then get a room. a room two down from us had 20 people in it and were loud until 3 a.m. The front desk to their credit went up 3 different times to ask them to quite down, but never to any action (apparently the mgr., agreed to provide them with a party room)

If partying is what you want to do, this is a good venue. if sleep is something you crave at traveling or coming back from your night out - find a different place.

date of stay was the weekend of August 8th and 9th 2009

First of all, let me rave about the hospitable and efficient face of this property — Donna. Unbeknownst to me, when Donna took my reservation there was a personnel vortex brewing. During my stay I learned the GM had departed, and so had the additional front desk staff. This became apparent because Donna was a fixture at the front desk from dawn until after midnight. She was a wizard of a goodwill ambassador for the property, efficiently handling reservations, check-in, requests, and departures. IHG would do well to develop this paragon of southern hospitality and efficiency for their management cone. It was a major achievement transforming a rusting skeleton of steel beams, that served as a blight on the modest skyline Virginia's smallest city, into a pleasant Holiday Inn. How much better it would have been if the architect and partners had adapted a more sympathetic historic facade as one routinely sees in nearby Abington. Still, the rooms were spotless, the baths spacious, the digital television crystal clear, and the wireless acceptable, if a tad slow, but then the Internet is complimentary. Oh, a nice touch is the local newspaper they slip under your door each morning. The property's restaurant, "TroutDale Steakhouse," is touted as the best in Norton and I doubt many would challenge that claim. Still, the offerings are quite pricey for a rural city with a population of less than 4,000, which leads me to believe hotel guests will hardly be competing with townies for reservations. Their "Business Center" consists of one computer and a printer. It might better termed a courtesy Internet station. Another reviewer states, "the Holiday Inn Norton is the best in Wise County" — an opinion with which I concur. However, that observation has to be taken in perspective. After all the field consists of but four alternatives. While I visit Wise County with some regularity to attend the annual Mefford Family Reunions, this stay at the Holiday Inn Norton was the best I've experienced in Southwestern Virginia.

This hotel had to have had a fire in it during construction. The hallways smell of smoke. Do not stay in this hotel if you have enviromental allergies. The hotel staff smoke alot out front. I could not breath the two nights I stayed there. Checking in and out is a pain because there are no luggage carts.

After reviewing several hotels in the Southwestern Virginia area, we decided to book our rooms at the Holiday Inn Norton. Our decision was based on several factors:

Location - the hotel is relatively close to the family we came to visit in the Clintwood/Haysi area of Southwestern Virginia.

Accomodations - we have a 5-person family. It may seem odd, but many of the hotels we checked into could not accomodate 5 people -- many in the area can only accomodate 4.

Age - the hotel is almost brand new - it was completed in March 2008.

Brand - Holiday Inn and the IC Hotels properties are reasonably reliable.

After traveling 8+ hours to Norton, we were very pleased with our decision.

We found the exterior of the hotel to be very nice. It was lit up with Christmas lights and was very welcoming. When we entered the lobby, it was a standard hotel lobby with seating and a sitting area off to the left, with a bank of elevators also on the left.

The woman at the front desk, Pam, was extremely helpful. Our reservation had been for a King Suite - a king bed in one room with a pull-out bed in the other room. However, when we told her of our situation (5 people) and asked if she could do anything to "hook us up", she indicated that she could give us two adjoining King rooms. This worked out great! We were able to put our two teenagers in one of the rooms, and my wife, my 7 year old, and I were in the other. Each of the rooms had a sofabed, so my 7 year old was able to sleep in the sofabed.

As for amenities, each of the rooms had a large king size bed (very comfortable), nice flat screen LCD television, work desk, chair with ottoman, and bathroom. Because it is such a new property, everything was very clean. The bedrooms, sleeping areas, bathrooms and so forth were immaculate.

The property has a restaurant called the Carriage House on the 5th floor, along with a lounge where they have live music. The restaurant is good and from the menu, seems to specialize in steak dishes. We were all pleased with our entrees (except for my wife, who indicated that her steak was cold and the green beans a touch overdone).

That said, the staff in the restaurant (Yvonne is awesome) did their best to please and gladly made up for the shortcomings in my wife's meal.

The property has an indoor pool [which we took full advantage of!] on the first floor, as well as a laundry room, fitness room, and business center. It is worth noting that I am writing this review from the business center!

All in all, the best part of the stay, and the most important aspect of any lodging experience is the excellence of the staff. Every single staff member we interacted with was very pleasant, and did their utmost to give us anything we asked for.

Final Note: the ONLY reason I am not giving this hotel 5 stars is because I been very fortunate it being able to stay at some truly 5 star hotels throughout North America and Europe.

I would definitely recommend this hotel to any other fellow travelers. IMHO, this is the best hotel in the Southwestern Virginia area. It is new, clean, and the staff are extremely helpful and courteous.

After we ventured up to the resturant then lounge the service was outstanding, waitress was very friendly and provided us with any information we need as well as helped inform us of what there was to do in the area. Request Kirstie in the Dining Room and Laura in the bar. After out weekend we enjoyed a speey and friendly checkout with Pam!
