First, I have to say we were the wrong couple in the wrong hotel. As a mid / late 50’s couple we were tempted by a last minute deal to a 4 star family hotel and we had forgotten what that implies, but more of that later.
The hotel was still undergoing refurbishment (1st week of May 2014) and when we arrived much was still unfinished. By the end of the holiday most of the lifts were working, lighting had been installed around the pool and grounds, reception displays had been installed, the chef’s / restaurant had worked out how to operate, etc. The restaurant is standard self-service buffet with the usual range of hot and cold offerings. There is a separate kids serving area with suitable child meals and loads of child seats available. The food was plentiful and quite varied although vegetables were destroyed in the usual Spanish way! My wife needs a gluten free diet and she was able to choose something each night that suited her.
The rooms have been refurbished quite well; new beds, mattresses, bathroom, etc. The shower screen is a disaster, finishing 2cm above the bath. As the shower is quite powerful, the floor gets as wet as the bath after a shower! The kitchen area had new doors on original carcases but it looked OK. The new sofa-bed in the lounge area was very good quality with a memory foam mattress. The kitchen was quite light on utensils (take your own sharp knives if you are self-catering) but OK to support half-board holidays. If you are self-catering, the local supermarkets are quite poor but minutes up the main road from the main beach access is a huge Eroski hypermarket on Avenida Les Palmeres.
There is a decent TV but although they advertise digital channels, we found it difficult to find anything suitable. Thankfully we always take a portable dvd player and plugged that into the TV to watch some old favourite dvd’s.
The pool has an excellent children’s area with a water slide / climbing frame set-up that seemed to delight the kids and a full time life guard. The Thomson children’s programme seemed well organised with nightly shows for them from 7-30pm, but right next door to the restaurant so the sounds come straight in. Sometimes that helped drown out the crying children! There did not appear to be any adult entertainment but that may be linked to the refurbishment programme.
Noise was the big problem for us, both from other guests and outside the hotel. As a family hotel there were many young children who all took their turn to cry (for hours) in the rooms and restaurant, shout and run in the corridor outside the room, etc. Night-time external noise was extraordinary. Neighbouring hotels had outside entertainment at full volume until 11pm. One wing of the hotel, fortunately not ours, has rooms within 30 feet of an independent open-air karaoke bar that operates until 3am each night. This is not the fault of the hotel but a symptom of being in a Spanish holiday resort.
This seems to be a good hotel choice if you are a family or grandparents with young children. The children’s facilities and entertainment seem to be well, organised. Don’t be put off by my grumpy thoughts re noisy children – when you are there, it’s simply your turn when your children cry, shout, etc. If your children have left home and you want a relaxing holiday, look for somewhere else.

Room Tip: The hotel is a V shape with reception in the middle - ask for a room on the left side to be away fro...

We have just returned from a week at the Coma Gran. After reading some of the tripadvisor reviews, I was a little nervous about the standard of the hotel especially the rooms. However we were pleasantly surprised when we saw the hotel had undergone a huge refurbishment. It was our first holiday with our 17 month old and our main priority was there was plenty for him to do and had all relevant facilities. He loved every minute. The kids pool was brilliant albeit a little cold (but he didn't seem to mind!), there is also a soft play area, a creche and another play room which is open 24 hours a day complete with a cot, microwave and changing facilities. We hired a cot and high chair for the room which was so convenient. The room was safe enough for the little one to run around in (with our supervision). All I would say was a couple of nights it was a little noisy and I suspect it was the hotel opposite (we were in room 410 for reference). The kitchenette had a small cooker, microwave but not a oven/grill. The only downside really was the beds though. They were extremely uncomfortable. The rooms have twin beds only.

The evening entertainment even commenced with "little pups" which was especially for 0-3 years olds. The entertainment team were great too. The hotel staff were lovely, very friendly and helpful as were all the Thomson Reps.

The resort isn't one I would have chosen post baby but with a little one, it is perfect. The hotel is only a 4 minute walk to the lovely sandy beach and we walked a lot during our stay. In one direction you can walk to S'Illot and in the other direction, you can walk along to Cala Millor and Cala Bona -make sure you have comfortable shoes though, it is a fair walk! It was just lovely to be able to explore other resorts with a pushchair. There are an abundance of restaurants and bars just outside the hotel although you are more likely to get Fish and Chips or pub food than authentic Paella!

The only thing that let me down was the food. We went on Half Board basis. The breakfast was fine but the evening meal I struggled with. I am a vegetarian and there was barely anything I could eat except salad and a couple of main dishes such as boiled potatoes and vegetables. What I could eat, i found bland. I did mention to the staff that I was vegetarian but it didn't really help in terms of choice of food. Just a shame though as even when they made Pizza, they put ham on it! Luckily desserts were lovely especially the ice cream.

The resort has a regular bus service to some resorts close by such as Puerto Christo and also to the Capital, Palma but if you wanted to venture a little further, you would need to hire a car. There are bus services to these more distant places but not very regular and sometimes they dont turn up which means you could incur a hefty taxi bill if you were to miss the return bus. This was my 3rd time to the island and if you haven't seen it, it is definitely worth exploring. Our little one was just happy to play in the pool and beach so we didn't venture very far this time. There is a Market behind the hotel on Wednesday evenings which is pleasant.

I definitely recommend this hotel if you have a young family, excellent facilities and location.

Room Tip: Most rooms appear to have a sea view.

Myself , my wife and my daughter have just spent 10 days here. There had been alot of concern that the refurb wouldnt be finished by the 1st of may. Most of it has but still work ongoing , jacuzzi isnt open etc . The hotel is now ultra modern with clean spacious rooms with plazma screen tv's. Excellent splash pool for kids , huge adult pool with an ambundence of sunbeds. Indoor and outdoor bars and entertainement areas with indoor pool , gym , creche , play areas and football court. Lovley poolside food with freindly service. Thomson creche , club and reps are excellent and there is plenty to door for all ages all day. Its an excellent modern family hotel with plenty to do. My 2 year old loved it , loved Thomson dog and Abbie and her team. Sa Coma is excellent all based around the hotel , great places to eat. Number 1 has to be JJs , good food also at El sol , Dolphin Cafe and Atlantic. Spar next door but there is a big Eroski supermarket about a 5 minute walk away. Local resorts Sillot and Cala Millor and within walking distance. Its an excellent hotel with excellent amenities , just a pity it isnt fully complete. Will be booking to go back

Had a good time here. A weeks stay. Lovely and clean apartment. Only downside was the loud music blaring from the bar below and that the air con didn't work. Good facilities for self catering and in a lovely place with 5 minutes to the beach.

We got this great last minute deal and got a spacious 1 bedroomed apartment (room 123). Upon arrival we quickly got checked in and found the apartment very well equipped. The apartment faced the main road and was above the Spar but there wasn't any noise that caused an issue. The hotel has had a recent upgrade and you can tell where the money has been spent. The pool area was fantastic and never had any problems getting a sunbed. The pool has been reshaped and there is a kiddies splash pool and play area. We went as a couple but this hotel is a Thomson Family hotel with brilliant facilities. I would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel and the resort to my friends with children and I would have no problem going back. The hotel was spotless and all the staff worked tirelessly. All in all a great week away.

Well we had a great bargain break courtesy of Thomson in the Coma Gran a four star hotel in Sa Coma,Malorca. We stayed in a self catering apartment which was large, functional and clean. The hotel has recently had a refurb done to a good standard and the reception area feeling quite opulent.Being a Familly orientated hotel it was also great for couples of all ages and remained busy outside by the pool in the day time, and quiet and civilised in the evening. We essentially used the hotel as a base, using a hire car to visit, port Pollenca,Porto cristo, cala rataja, cala d or,Soller, port de Soller, cala millor and so on.All fantastic to visit and some really great eateries,no time to lie on the beach.....So it's a thumbs up for Coma Gran for a reasonable return on your hard earned.I think we will return and recommend you try it for yourselves. As for the food etc,I have no idea and wonder why you shoul want to eat hotel food with a load of great eateries within walking distance or a short Taxi drive. We say "Do It".....

We stayed at the Coma Gran in 2011, all the family loved it. The entertainment for the kids was fantastic.
This year we have booked to return the first two weeks in July. I've read that the hotel and pool area are having a refurb for the new season. Does anybody know what exactly they are doing to the pool area?? I have asked Thomson and they don't have a clue. In fact they suggested that when I get an answer I should let them know :-,
Some people have said that they are building a splash pool for the kids, is it true??
