“Very original museum near Alcudia”
Reviewed March 14, 2012

The museum contains a wide variety of different art forms including a sculpture park with large scale animals (our children, 5 and 8 years old absolutely loved this part of the museum!!) The collection of antique children portraits is stunning due to the very original presentation, inside a former water reservoir with fantastic lighting of the paintings. We went there on a Tuesday when you can actually visit the museum for FREE, but will definitely go back to visit the other exhibitions (the Hassan Fathy building and the underground Sokrates gallery), as these spaces were closed for the public that day. Anyone been on the guided tour they offer? Is it available in English?

“A Hidden Gem - Wonderful Portrait Collection and Beautiful Sculpture Garden”
Reviewed May 11, 2011

The Foundation is located near Alcudia (Majorca) in a remote place amidst the forest. So you will need a car to access it. Alternatively, you can do a bike tour or have a big hike there.

To find it, you should follow the purple signs saying "Fundació" at the roundabouts coming from the highway heading to or from Alcudia.

Every Tuesday (9:30 - 12:30 a.m. and 2.30 - 5:30 p.m.), visitors can enjoy the collection of children's portraits ("Nins") dating from several centuries for free and tour the scultpure and the rose garden. An audioguide can be borrowed for a fee of 4 €.
On Wednesdays and Saturdays, guided tours of the complete collection (including a collection of modern art in the owner's house) are offered for a fee of 9 € (for one exhibition) or for 15 € (for all three exhibitions - the third of which is named "Espacio Sokrates" and consists of exhibits from different time periods and cultures).

The road to the Fundación is quite a bit of a hellride, as the lane is very narrow and contains lots of pot-holes. Before you can enter the area, you will find yourself in front of a locked gate. If you drive your car right in front of the gate, it will open automatically, so that you can continue your ride down to the Foundation where parking spaces are available. Pedestrians and bikers can access the area by simply opening the little gate which is located left from the big locked gate.

“Visited on a Tuesday when the entrance was free”
Reviewed February 11, 2011

This read as an interesting place to visit from our guide book. It has an art gallery, gardens, sculpture park and a house to look round. Entry is free on Tuesdays, although you can't look around the house on that day.

It's a bit of a drive to get there, follow signs for Fundacio from Alcudia out towards Cap De Pinar. After a while you'll turn off the road and follow a bumpy track for several kilometers. Eventually you come to a dead end with a large fence blocking your way. Drive up to the gate and it will open automatically.

It's not a busy place, even with free entry we only saw a couple of other people in the hour or so we were there.

The gardens weren't that impressive and only took ten minutes to look round. The art galley was showing an exhibition of children’s portrait from around the world all painted between the 16th and 19th century. Which we weren't that interested in.
The main reason for us going was to look around the sculpture park, and happily that was really good. It's spread out over several acres with lots of art dotted around.

I'm not sure I'd want to pay much to visit this place but for free it's definitely worth a look. Especially if you are in the area.

You can read more about our visit in my travel diaries at pencer.org.
