“Good on the whole - few niggles”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 21, 2011

Booked for 1 week mid-October (off season) - Self Catering.

GOOD POINTS -
Check in - Good English speaking staff generally helpful and the main entrance is easy to find, although you will have to carry your luggage to your room.
Location is great for Alcudia Beach and Puerto Alcudia is left at the traffic lights at the main road (1 min walk). Turn right at the lights and there is loads more though in terms of restaurants, bars, tabac shop etc. Old town is 5 min drive away.
Getting around - we asked for the supermarket Eroski, they directed us easily. also worth noting, for general groceries the lady running the spar across the road isn't that much more expensive than eroski and I would look at the other local 'supermarkets on the main strips.
Air con worked - we were in Block 3 on the second floor, 2 sets of stairs but only small sets.
Kitchen was compact had nearly everything we needed.
Towels were available, as many as you need just help yourself from the open cupboards in the corridor otherwise ask the cleaning maid.
Room walls not bad, we heard a bit of shouting from next door when their kids were just being kids but the walls were far from being thin non sound proof walls so not to worry if making a bit of noise (this was great for me as I tend to be a light sleeper).
Generally quiet, family oriented resort - everyone seemed to be asleep around 10pm, even though in the quiet season most of the rooms in our corridor were occupied.
Outdoor pool, fairly clean, water a bit cold but generally well kept.
Indoor pool and jacuzzi was good, Sauna was available on request, Gym was very basic but ok for topping up your biceps, triceps, chest etc.
Mainly German guests - not too loud, generally keep themselves to themselves (no offence).

BAD POINTS -
Stone floor corridor echoes everything including women’s high heels.
Beds not the best - quite cheap but ok for the money paid, if you have back problems though I would probably ask for additional sheets to put down underneath or the blankets provided in the cupboards.
Cleaning maid did not wash the dishes - I washed them, i've heard of self-catering, but self-cleaning - come on. We tended to eat out most nights except one or two so it wasn't worth saying something but if you are cooking in every night then it could be a bit of a hassle. Borrow washing up liquid from the maid, but you will have to buy your own dish scrubber.
Cleaning maid would knock on the door even though the do not disturb sign was on nearly every morning around 10-11am, I would have to say please come back in 30mins and one time we had a late night so I said give us an hour, she didn't come back - guess that's the Majorcan way, we laughed it off but if you were in the middle of something it would be annoying i.e. shower, cooking, snoozing.
Normal things like hairdryer (10E p/week, iron 10E p/week and the key to the room safe 20E p/week were extras) i thought was a bit much as they are only bog standard Asda ones.
Luggage scale is 1 Euro per each item!!! As we bought souvenirs we needed to know.
Mainly German guests (dont expect smiles from other holiday makers, no offence but we smiled at nearly everyone and it was like smiling at a wall).
Smoke stained rooms, only the ceiling was re-painted white, doors all had smoke stains but the room didn’t at all smell of stale smoke nor was it dirty, we did request non-smoking when booking but i only noticed the ash tray and smoke stains on the second day so decided to leave it, but if you have kids check these things on arrival before you take your luggage up because if you change rooms you may have to drag it across to another block.

MAJORCA -
Hire a car we used Record a go who were ok, costed 200euros with a full tank of gas and insurance as i paid by direct debit, if you have a credit card could prob get it cheaper. The cars all have scratches on them, dont worry about it if your hire car does, it’s the Majorcan way.
Weather was great mid 20's, not a drop of rain whilst we were there, a bit of a chill at night but it was welcomed to me after the warm day sightseeing and sun soaking.
Alcudia - the beach is alright, Sa Rocha on the way to Can Picafort is better and Es Trenc is 1hr drive away to the south but is worth it. Closer still is Alcanada a very small almost private beach but I wished we'd found it earlier as when we got there mid-afternoon one day it was just perfect.
Enjoi cocktail bar (bit pricey) - Alcudia
Banana Club very friendly, nice atmosphere.- Alcudia
Old town markets - Monday around 10am - 2pm place was heaving. Also go to the old town when its quiet, lovely peace and quiet, tranquil, typically Spanish.
Go to Cala Ratjada it's very well kept, loads of restaurants, bars at very reasonable prices.
Go to Palma for the day - see the Cathedral 4 Euros amazing, shops, port etc, Arab baths were a bit of a let down but worth a look for 2 Euros each.
Cap de formentor is driveable from Alcudia (1hr 30 mins easy driving in traffic - high season would be longer though) and the drive is not as bad people make out, people were driving 4x4s, saloons, etc, we were in a 1.2 corsa and it made it no probs!
Festival park worth a look - its like a crap shopping centre but its a new development and the nike factory store is worth a look if you have the car.
Caves el drac (1hr drive) or Coves del campanet (15mins) we went to the near one and it was spectacular, lovely cafe, setting, tour guide, a must see.

Enjoy.

Stayed here for one week in May.complex is spacious clean and well run.buildings are three story high with no lifts, we were on top floor so carrying cases up three floors was not good.room was good size with a/c.comfortable,storage space very limited.bathroom average.interconnecting door with adjoining room allowing sound from adjoining room to be heard.staff are very helpful,a special mention to entertainment staff who are top class.location good with shops ,beach, bars nearby.

Room Tip: bear in mind there are no lifts ask for ground floor.

The experience of the hotel were very poor. Pool water was not changed after one boy did poo in the kids pool. Lunch and dinner were the same type of food they served all 10 days. The bread was very dry and the fruit was not fresh. The apartment was okay. Check in was at 12 but we got the room at 13.30, even though they knew when we arrived. Wireless internet did not work every day, which staff did not see as their problem, and thought we could solve by using their payment computer. Cleaning af the toilets in the reception was poor.

We stayed at the Alcudia Hotel for 10 days at the end of June and below are our thoughts.

Hotel location was perfect with the beach just across the road and also very close the port area which is fantastic.

This hotel is really designed for the Germans and Scandinavians and during our stay I think we were the only British family there.

Hotel was kept very clean, including the pool area.

The pools were great and perfect for young children as the bottom slowly slopes into the water.

The Sun loungers were continually being reserved with towels very early in the morning but I think this happens at every hotel so can moan too much. If you went to the pool anytime after 10.30 the chances are there would be no where for you to sit.

They could also do with a few more umbrella’s as the ones they have are fixed into the ground so as the sun moves across the pool area it was virtually impossible to find shade for the kids. We bought our own umbrella for 12 Euros for the beach and ended up taking it down to the pool and fixing it to our baby stroller which worked pretty well.

The entertainment team were great especially the Mini club with Charlotte and Karliyn who were fantastic with our 4 years old daughter. Various shows each evening and a Mini Disco at 8pm each night. Our daughter also loved the Mini Disco in the pool everyday at 4.30pm.

In the evening there is an outside bar for drinks whilst watching the shows. Various drinks available with Beer (San Miguel), wine and cocktails. Only downside was the Bar Manager who seemed very abrupt and angry all the time and would literally throw drinks into the small glasses.

The food was ok, not the greatest we have had and hoped for better but still found enough to eat. The dining room did get very busy and once we did have to queue to enter the dining room. Can imagine this getting worse as the hotel gets busier. The catering staff were very friendly and provided us with baby food each diner time for our 10 month old baby which was nice..you just need to ask the staff.

If you’re lucky and they are not already taken there are tables outside the dining room at the front of Hotel which were more pleasurable to eat at as away from the hustle and bustle of the dining room.

The pool bar provides free drinks during the day and basic ice cream. Any hot food there is discounted by 50% and not free which was disappointing as we have stayed in other hotels where chips, sandwiches, nuggets etc were available free of charge as part of the all inclusive package which is great when you have kids.

I found a few staff members at reception to be very unhelpful to be honest and slightly grumpy. On one occasion I asked if they could call our pre-booked taxi (as they could speak Spanish) to confirm a few details regarding child seats and was told No I would need to call them directly myself and that was it. I was not very impressed. We were also entitled to lunch on our last day so the night before I requested a packed lunch instead as knew we would be tight on time but was told we were not allowed to have this and would need to eat in the dining room. It was clearly marked on my Hotel card that Lunch on our last day was included yet they refused our request even though I had in effect paid for it.

We had a pool view in block three and were on the middle floor. No lifts available so I was continually carrying our two pushchairs up and down two flights of stairs. The apartment itself was fairly good. Large bathroom was ok, although the bath looked fairly grubby with quite a few black marks which wouldn’t clean off so we showered the kids every night rather than bathing them as we normally would. You have a small kitchen with a fridge, sink, two ring hob and a microwave which was really handy to sterilise the baby bottles. Plenty of plates, cups, cutlery etc. No Toaster or kettle however. You can hire these for 12 Euros a week.

The lounge area of the apartment has two sofa’s which have removable back cushions and convert into beds and the main bedroom has two single beds pushed together. There is no hair dryer. Plenty of storage space in both rooms. A little portable TV was also in the lounge area. Air Con worked pretty well. My only grumble was the fact we were charged an extra 40 Euro on arrival for the use of a Baby cot which I did not know about as thought this would have been included when booking?

The supermarkets outside of the hotel stock everything you would need but are fairly expensive however 5 mins walk down the road is a supermarket called Erovski which was virtually half the price of the other shops. Definitely worth a visit to stock up.

Also as you come out of the main hotel entrance and turn left there is a great British bar 2 minute walk away called the Brunel inn which have a lovely family running it, served good home cooked food at sensible prices and really looked after the kids including turning the TV over to Cbeebies.

This is nothing to do with the hotel, however my wife and I had a few mosquito bites during our visit, neither of our children did but definitely worth taking some mosquito repellent with you.

Alcudia itself is great with lovely sandy beaches which are perfect for the kids and the port area is superb with lots going on.

This is our second visit to Alcudia as it’s a perfect family resort and overall we really enjoyed our holiday. With just a few changes Hotel would be great as the grounds are beautiful and the pool is lovely however next time we visit Alcudia I think we will try the Viva Tropic which I hear is a slightly better hotel with a few more British families mixed with other nationalities.

We enjoyed the stay because the pool was so great for our daughter aged 4. The pool gradually got deeper on one end (with no step) so she could play at the depth she wanted. Very good for young kids. Also, the location was perfect for us. Within 100 m we reached the beach, shops and restaurants. Spacy room for us three, clean and nice.

This hotel is just across the road from the beautiful beach of Alcudia. The gardens and pool areas of the hotel are really beautiful. Hotel is spotlessly clean. No hairdryer. We had a one bedroom appartment overlooking the pool area, which was very nicely furnished and was convenient having a fridge, although we did got AI. Staff very friendly. Only two other British couples there, mostly Danish and German where I guess the hotel does most of its advering with travel agents - shame they don't use some British travel companies as well!! Close to down to be able to walk around the shops, the Marina, bars and cafe's along the front. I require a gluten free diet and that was provided by the hotel - special, bread, cakes and croisant at breakfast and they were only too willing to cook me alternative main courses if there was nothing on the buffet I could eat. In saying all this my husband and I did feel that the buffets seemed a little as if they had been catered on a budget!! Breakfast was geared more to the continental style but we did always manage to find enough to eat. AI is great because, not only are the alcoholic drinks included but all tea, coffe and soft drinks - which soon mount up through the day if you have to pay for them all. The entertainment was not that brilliant but I suspect, as the season had only just started, it could get better - in fact it seemed the food got less budgety as the week went on! Would go back to this hotel again. Two beautiful outdoor pools - one adult and one children, also indoor pool and jucuzzi. Could have done with a few more sun umbrellas around the pool.

Room Tip: Always request a quiet room overlooking pool
