My wife and I had first encountered the charming town of Porto Cristo during a stay at nearby Calas de Mallorca, in May of this year... and it was love at first sight!
The resort does not boast an extensive range of shops, restaurants, hotels or attractions. But what it lacks in terms of numbers it most certainly makes up for in terms of taste and character.
Having sampled the ambience of Porto Cristo for one day in May, the good lady and I vowed to return for a longer stay.. and so we did on October 6th 2001 courtesy of a "late deal" package holiday from Direct Holidays (www.directholidays.co.uk). A word for the tour operator here.
Over the years, we have encountered the broad spectrum of service provision associated with tour operators, from very poor to very good ( and all that lies between). I am pleased to report that this particular experience of Direct Holidays was extremely good, throughout.
Of course, the main feature of any holiday is the standard of accommodation and the services associated therewith and this brings me nicely on to the Hotel Drach.
The "Drach" (Dragon) is a stylish, 80 bed, family owned hotel which also boasts 23 self catering apartments in an adjacent block. The complex lies in an elevated position overlooking the resorts attractive and imposing marina. It is also conveniently located some 300 metres from one of the island's premier tourist attractions - Cuevas del Drach ( the Dragon Caves).
The hotel rooms are simply furnished in traditional Spanish style with the obligatory tiled floors complimented with dark wood furnishing. The room which we occupied benefited from private facilities including full bathroom with over bath shower and bidet. Louvre doors opened out onto the adequate balcony which offered magnificent views across the marina and sea-front. Our room was serviced daily to a spotlessly clean standard.
The reception area is simple but functional and the bar/snack/ tv lounge area, where smoking is permitted leads through to the attractive (non-smoking) restaurant. During the course of our stay, meals were well varied, attractively presented and plentiful with something to appeal to even the most discerning palate (not forgetting the customary chips). No complaints here!
The outer terrace provided for a peaceful late night haven from where to enjoy that well deserved night cap (or two) The enchanting sound of the local musical entertainers in the lounge was complimented by the haunting sounds of the surrounding wildlife (I am sure that I heard a wolf one night, though the good lady put it down to 1 too many Rum and Cokes!)
I must make special reference to the hotel staff who, without exception, were thoroughly efficient, attentive and extremely friendly.
From Anna - with the very reassuring English accent - at reception, to Sebastiane - the genuinely pleasant head waiter - and his staff, all provided a standard of service which I have rarely found elsewhere and which is to be congratulated.
If I were forced to profer any criticism ( and my arm would need to be twisted quite severely) they would be minor points viewed, hopefully as being constructive by nature. The rooms would benefit from some form of cooling system. A ceiling fan would suffice In my opinion all hotel rooms in hot countries should be fitted with a small fridge
There - that's it... in essence Senora Gaya, who owns the Drach can feel justifiably proud of this hotel - which we would not hesitate in recommending. In doing so, however, it would be only fair to point out that the establishment is more suited to mature clients than those young singles or families with young children.
Yes, if Porto Cristo is the "crown" of Mallorca (and I firmly believe that it is), then the Hotel Drach is the "Jewel" in that "Crown" and one of the island's best kept secrets... long may it continue to be so.
Since this original review we have enjoyed two further stays at the Drach and were pleased to note that standards remained high. It was particularly pleasing to be warmly and genuinely greeted on arrival by staff who, by now, have become friends. This is what a holiday should be!
