My wife found this hotel, quite by chance, as it not well advertised or promoted here in the UK. Our experience of the Son Mas started a little while before we even traveled. Our flight was due in to Palma airport quite late and we were concerned that we would be tired but hungry when we arrived. Having contacted them by email to inform them that we would be arriving late, they responded by telling us that there would be a cold meal and refreshments ready for us, whenever we arrived. Following an interesting car journey (it really is rural), once we landed, we eventually arrived at about 12.30 am and guess what - a sumptuous cold meal was served, together with an ice cold bottle of local Majorcan white wine in our room, which was huge by the way!
Things just got better and better. The room was huge and the bed was comfortable and so big that we almost felt we needed telephones to talk to each other. There was a large sofa, coffee table, desk, fridge (which worked), loads of hanging space, plenty of coathangers,TV and a bathroom to die for, with seperate shower, toilet and very large bath. On opening the set of French Windows, we discovered a beautiful rooftop terrace, totaly private and big enough to have 2 chairs, table, 2 sunloungers and still room enough to have a party. The sun hit the terrace from first thing in the morning untill about 17.00.
Breakfast was a real pleasure, especially as it was served until 11.00. On one morning we didnt come down until about 10.45 and the food condition and quantity was just as good as it had been when on other days we had eaten at 09.00. We were able to take our pick from any table, either on the delightful terrace, the sheltered area, under the olive trees or right in the sun - amazing!
Our next stop was the swimming pool, which for most of the week we were there, felt like our own private pool. This is a very big infinity style pool, with great views over the surrounding countryisde (no other houses or signs of civilisation in sight and beautifully designed semi private areas for sunbathing and generally lying around doing nothing. Towels were continually replaced and there were clean and pleasant toilet facilities, with an honour fridge for cold drinks and beers (ice and fresh lemon always available). On the couple of days we decided to leave our haven for the beach (no more than 5 minutes drive away), the hotel were more than happy for us to take pool towels etc.
Lunch was always available. Simple fare, salads, omlettes, pasta etc and very reasonably priced. Dinner was a strange one for us. We were given a menu at breakfast and asked to choose what we wanted for later, if we were going to eat at the hotel (Porto Cristo and Porto Columb both only a few minutes drive away fro a great selection of restaurants). So on the second night we decided to give it a try. We were told that we could go down to dinner any time up until 22.30, again we had the choice of any table and the food and service was brilliant. The price was not too bad either. It was so good we ate there on 3 more evenings.
There are only 16 rooms at the hotel, but you would never really know that there was anyone else in the hotel, it is so quiet. The staff are absolutely brilliant, always there but never seen. There is no bar, but wherever you sit, someone will come and find you and ask if you would like a drink etc.
In our opinion, this is NOT a hotel for children and it is not somewhere where you will be constantly hassled or have staff hovering, it is a quiet luxurious retreat, for relaxing. Take a book and catch up on all your reading!
This probably sounds like an advert for the Son Mas - I can assure you it is not! We have stayed in many places, and this is right up there with the best. It is not cheap, but we thought it was great value for money.
The only thing that irritated us was that the TV only had 1 UK channel (BBC World) and about 20 German channels. When we asked why this was, we were told that basically only German nationals used the hotel and for some reason we were one of the very few British couples to have booked!
Much as I hate to say it, as I would love to keep this gem to myself, all you Brits looking for a quiet, relaxing holiday in luxury are really missing a trick by not giving it a go.
