OLA Tomir
Ranked #6 of 7 Hotels in Portals Nous
Reviewed July 19, 2014

Just returned from the Tomir. Hotel very clean and rooms are spacious but balcony was quite small. Kids club was brilliant, only let down was the entertainment at night time. Be prepared to listen to the hotel 'anthem' and dance 4 or 5 times a day. For the adults they do water aerobics and other exercise classes during the week, water volleyball and also zorbing in the pool. No lilo's were allowed in the big pool, only in the baby pool. They also have a playground and games room for the kids. We were self catering so eating out around the area did get expensive and not much goin on around the hotel so we went into Palma Nova for 3 nights out of the week. Bus stop is just down the road for the hotel and costs 1.50 euros or taxi will cost 7 euros. There is a supermarket just around the corner which is a mini Iceland, ideal for self catering guests. Overall, a good holiday but won't be going again due to lack of things to do in the area.

Stayed at the Tomir from 5th July until 12th July 2014 following a stay here in the same week last year. The hotel is perfect for families and people who enjoy the bustle of the livelier resorts but are still looking for a good nights sleep. The hotel is 20-30 minutes from Palma airport and close to the Marineworld attraction with local amenities a short distance away. Palma Nova/Magaluf or €7-10 for a taxi to the latter.

The hotel staff are extremely pleasant and helpful, in particular the reception staff and the bar/restaurant staff. The bar and restaurant staff work long hours and are minimally staffed - unfortunate that in a busy hotel there are only 1 or 2 people behind the bar, meaning a long time to be served, which is not the fault of the people behind the bar but may be more suitable to have more staff at peak times?

Unsure if the room cleaning was on a every-other-day basis or not but despite only declining room cleaning on one day as we were still in the room, and asking for the room to be cleaned via the little green door sign every single day, the room was only cleaned once in the time we were there which was disappointing. This said, the rooms were spacious and well kept anyway, although the mattresses are dire - extremely thin and noisy when you tried to turn over!!

We stayed half board which suited us fine. The breakfast selection was ample with a continental offering - croissants, toast and preserves, meat, cheese, cereals, fruit and a selection of hot food also. Plenty of variety to fill you up until lunchtime or later. The evening selection fared a little worse, for me personally, the evening meal was quite stodgy, lots of pasta, rice and chips with everything. Despite this, I was able to find something every evening and did not go hungry. Fresh salad, fruit and cake/ice cream available every night also.

The animation staff this year put on shows or entertainment every evening, of the 4 entertainment staff only one of them seemed to enjoy what they were doing, Miskah. The rest of the staff seemed to be more into when they were finishing work to go socialise with the young single male contingent who were at the hotel this week! Bingo and Quizzes were ran through in record time, during the bingo, at one point, 4 numbers were called in 30 seconds which felt a bit rushed!! One of the animation staff in particular, seemed outraged when asked to do something he did not like or was not sure of how to do which was a bit off putting.

The bar was amply stocked but it's worthwhile to say bring your chequebook!! The drinks are pricey for a hotel bar, and begin to add up when you have a few of them in one night. Also, the small things add up, particularly if you are in a group or a family - €2,50 for an ice cream and hitting €6 for 2 large draft soft drinks.

The reception had a book of 'safety tips' including one advising not to jump into the pool the first time you get into it as it could cause shock - I thought this was funny until I actually got in the pool - even on the warmest days the pool is extremely cold and doesn't seem to heat up when you are in it at all. On quite a few occasions I had to leave the pool after a few minutes, shivering! The pool would definitely benefit from some mild heating! Even the sea was warmer.

In amongst all of the above, the hotel is a good jumping off point and is reasonably priced for rooms and I would stay again and indeed recommend.

Room Tip: Ask for a room poolside for best views.

Rooms were excellent and well equipped and very spacious. Reception staff were very helpful and friendly and answered any questions. Pool area was nice and clean and the pool itself was of a good size. The food was of good quality and reasonably priced. However the bar was awful to say the least. The staff were nice to me only because I spoke Spanish and muttered under their breathe if any requests were made by anyone else who I stayed with. The bar closes at 11.30 so don't visit here if you intend to stay in the hotel to drink, you'll be thrown out to the reception and then eventually to bed. The bar prices were very expensive with a pint of local beer for 3.30 and a vodka and redbull for 6.90.

Room Tip: Some rooms have two balconies.

Apartments were clean and the reception staff very pleasant and helpful, location is just a 10 minute walk down hill to the main beach and 10 minutes walk uphill to portals village. The hotel has a good size pool area but we only used it on our last day as the beach is great. My disappointment was the room itself, the beds were very low and the room very warm, having said that the price was right and you get what you pay for. If you have an early flight you won't get your room until after 3, there is a luggage area and a place to get changed. Portals itself is a lovely place and it's easy to get to Palma and magaluf by bus or taxi.

I booked this hotel on a self catering basis and stayed for a week. I was very pleasantly surprised at good standard of accommodation and overall experience considering the low cost. We found the reception staff to be extremely helpful and informative. The pool was large with plenty of sunbeds. The entertainment staff were upbeat but not too pushy trying to recruit the willing for aqua aurobics ect. Portals nous has little for the average tourist, the marina is interesting to look around but v expensive to eat out. We used the cheap and frequent bus service to nearby Palma nova, Maggaluf and Palma. Just to note, people with mobility difficulties would find the hotels hilly location a problem, otherwise I would thoroughly recommend the Tomir.

Room Tip: Rooms 111, 112,113 have a very huge balcony.

Returned from ola tomir on the 4th June, lovely clean and friendly hotel, rooms had every thing u need, clean and spacious, we had a 2 bed family room and it was very adequate, we didn't eat at the hotel for breakfast or dinner so can't comment on that but the lunch snacks were good (ie chips, pizzas, toasted sandwiches). Pool area was very clean and tidy, baby pool was good for my 2 year old as it wasn't to deep!portals nous is a lovely area, but if u want to eat on the harbour it can get expensive, but defiantly worth a visit even if it's just to look at the boats and sports cars, if u want good cheap meals and all the tourist stuff get a taxi to palma nova which will Coast about 7 euros, can't wait to return.

the ola tomir is an efficiently run aparthotel and juan on reception is a pleasent ,well mannered man which nothing was too much for him alas the resort of portals nous is sadly lacking in any amenities for the average holiday maker you need to go to other resort areas like palma nova which is only a couple of minutes away by L140 and L160 bus you will find plenty of sit offs where you can get food and drink and watch the world go bye it also has beautiful beaches as well, if you want good food at good prices then kompass is the place to go they serve very good food there,so all in all portals nous needs a makeover to attract holiday makers to it so i could not recommend the area though if you just want somewhere to stay whilst you visit other resorts on majorca then you can do no worse than the ola tomir.
