Reviewed October 27, 2013

We stayed in the Galatzo 1st Oct 2013 to the 8th. We genuinely loved every minute.

I had really planned to write a long review, but its genuinely as others have said – great food, great entertainment and fantastic staff.

We never left the hotel complex the whole time and our only cost was the 18 euro for the room safe. Thats literally all we spent. There was always something happening and we enjoyed long afternoons at the pool bar. We saw no reason for excursions or a town visit.

Fantastic that there were no uncontrolled kids running around as has been common on our previous all inclusive experiences.

To those who seemed to have issues i would say the following

(a) As per the brochure - Its on a hill and its quite a bit out of town. If you *need* somewhere close to a resort, then next time read up a little before you book – its widely documented that its on a hillside out of town.

(b) The house band – fantastic. Had a ‘rock’ edge to their music but covered a lot of ground from 1950’s right up to date. They did a lovely acoustic set one afternoon by the pool which was really nice. Also the external acts that the Galatzo brought in were of a high standard too. The “very old” seemed to have issues with them, but i suspect those same people would complain no matter what it was

(c) Its a package holiday “four star”. If you think thats going to get you The Ritz then you’re wrong. Its a lovely holiday hotel but please, keep your expectations real.

(d) The evening entertainment finishes up before 11 every night, with the bar closing at midnight. I don’t think this is unreasonable either for those who enjoy a drink (us!!) or those who didn’t want to stay up late but didn’t want music blaring all night

(e) We never went near the “quiet” pool area as its quite a bit out of the way, and i certainly felt no urge to pay for a drink, when they were free at the other pool. Odd that the hotel is organised like that, but didn’t affect us so certainly not going to mark it down for it.

Genuinely loved every minute, incredibly relaxing and we were able to unwind totally which was our aim!

A big “thank you” to all the staff who really made the holiday for us – particularly the desk team who were always pleasant and efficient (and to Sabrina who sorted out a room problem we had mid week to our total satisfaction!), the entertainment team who were great, and the serving staff who were all a pleasure and genuinely seemed to enjoy their jobs – particularly Miguel!

So, we’ve booked to back at the start of June next year! We looked at other similar hotels online when we came back, but i don’t think any would compare to the total package that the Galatzo have got.

Keep up the good work!

Paul & Hilary

As usual we had read other people's blogs before deciding on the Galatzo. Most were very good with the occasional bad report.
Well, I think the bad ones were about a different hotel in a parallel universe, because from the moment we arrived to be greeted by Teresa on the desk, (foxy lady, cheeky smile and mischievous eyes), to saying goodbye to Kaz, we have never been made more welcome anywhere than at the Galatzo.
Without exception every single one of the staff we encountered were professional, welcoming, helpful, caring and friendly without being overt.
Forget the big 5* hotels with all the glitz and glamour, it is the hardworking staff who make a hotel what it is and if they are not up to it, then the star ratings are worthless.

Ok, so on with the blog.

The Resort.
The actual resort of Peguera is a half hour walk down a hill from the hotel. It is an easy walk back up providing that you have no disabilities. Alternatively, there is a free shuttle bus there and back on the hour for most of the day. It is quite small with all the usual bars, restaurants, tat shops etc. We noticed that almost all of the signage and info in the bars, restaurants were in German, so we concluded that the resort was geared very much towards German tourists. No big deal.
The beach was accessed through a glade of pine trees. The beach was clean with an abundance of beds and brollies which were rentable for about 12 euros. Plenty of seating throughout the resort. the shuttle bus stops adjacent to the municipal bus stop were you can get the bus into La Palma. You have a choice of the 102 or 104. The 102 takes about an hour, the 104 about 2 hours+ because it goes via Magaluf. A single trip ticket is 3.70 euros.

The Hotel.
Very large in terms of the area of ground it covers, but only about 350 rooms? The grounds and gardens are quite extensive and very well maintained, but be advised, the hotel is built on the side of a hill so there a lot of ups and downs, although having said that, there are adequate lifts and stair lifts for the less mobile. For sure, it was not a deterrent to the many guests in their 70s and 80s.
Typical Catalano furnishings and décor, lots of dark wood and marble. The internal public areas were very clean and well looked after. Some of the carpets will probably need routine replacement in the near future, as will some of the high chairs in the lobby bar.
Our room was very comfortable with plenty of cupboard space and a telly which received BBC1 and ITV. Very unusual.

Eating.
The restaurant is well laid out and never seemed crowded although the hotel was full. The waiters and waitresses were more than excellent. The food was a may zing and put to shame some big name 4 and 5* hotels. Congratulations to the chef and his team. AND- the bacon was cooked properly! PLUS baked beans, fried eggs, scrambled eggs and omelettes all cooked fresh on the griddle. And before the purists start banging on about eating 'Mediteranean' or European food when on holiday, the German, French and Scandinavian guests were wuffing the
'Full English' breakfast like there was no tomorrow.
Having said that, there was a more than adequate choice of food for all nationalities and palates. The soups were exceptionally good. Presentation was superb.

Entertainment Team and Representation.
I was bitterly disappointed with one aspect of the daily activities. I only got third place in the air rifle shooting. and Antonio went off sick before I could get another go :-( But I did win the boules :-)
No, seriously, this is probably the first time I have wanted to join in any activities, I think perhaps because it was not pushed. Kaz and Kelly were dynamos and totally enjoyable. The evening entertainment was also of a high standard and very enjoyable.
Once again, the bar and table service was excellent.
Rick, the Thomson rep was very good. Always ready to help and very knowledgable. Hope you have a good skiing season in Alp Duez Rick.

Facilities.
Free WIFI in the reception area. A lovely quiet reading room and library. A lounge with a grand piano for anyone to play on. Nice outside terraces, plenty of tables and chairs. Games and table tennis. Clay tennis courts. Shuttle bus.

Spa.
We did not use the spa facilities, but we did make use of the indoor pool at the spa as it was included. As in most places we have visited with a spa, we found the cost of the treatments to be too expensive for what you get and consequently, the spa is underused. If the costs were reduced, more people would use the them. Simple economics, reduce your profit margin, increase turnover = same gross profit. I think it is a Spanish thing.

Critique and suggestions.
More sunbeds and sunbed mats, (thicker ones as the sunbeds are uncomfortable).
Bigger shuttle bus and half hour turnround, (to coincide with municipal bus).
Better choice of pillow for standard room, not just for upgrade. Not everyone likes soft, feather pillows.
Aircon is not too clever.
More choice of cold meats at lunch and evening meals.
Better choice of cheese board, not so much plastic euro-cheese. Chef, there are more English, Scottish and Welsh cheeses than in the whole of France and Germany, but we only seem to get just one - a Euro-Cheddar occasionally.

that's it.

Overall.
A very well run hotel which, although is for adults and couples only, (BLISS), nevertheless has a friendly, family atmosphere. Excellent value.
Our thanks to all the staff, ( I will not mention names because I don't want to risk leaving anyone out)
Hope to see you again.

Room Tip: can't say much about the room choice except out room 218 was fine and had a sea views. Not all r...

We stayed in room 320. Great sea view, lovely soft pillows and duvets. Comfortable beds, enough wardrobe space. The food was excellent and waiters very attentive. We sat on the terrace each night and Miguel was able to remember our drinks although we were a table of 10. Kelly and Kas were very entertaining but not pushy re the activities. We'll be back!!

Room Tip: The top floor of the main building is best.

Just returned from a great all inclusive week at the Galatzo. Adult only hotel, no screaming kids, fantastic. Room was excellent with an outstanding view as hotel is on top of hill over looking Bay. Best entertainment ever. Great Spa, excellent service. Perhaps if there was one downside the food could have been less repetitive, would struggle staying any longer. That said it shouldn't really put you off. If you want busy nightlife, partying etc it's not for you. If you just want to chill and unwind, perfect. Remember I said it is on top of a hill this is a hint, the hotel is not on the flat, if you have problems walking it might not be for you although there are lifts.

Room Tip: rooms on 6/7th floors 02-08 have best views

Beautiful hotel set in a gorgeous hilltop location. You get fantastic views, but be warned you are quite a long walk away from the main town. It was nice walking to the town at night when it was cooler though. The hotel provides a shuttle bus almost hourly to the town with times advertised at the reception. The town has typical tourist shops and a busier vibe at night with bars and restaurants. Not as busy as Santa Ponsa, but we preferred that.

In the hotel the wait staff were very friendly and helpful, as were the Thomson Reps. The buffet restaurant was superb with a large variety to choose from. I particularly liked the themed nights (Japanese, Mexican etc). The only issue was the number of people leaving towels on sunbeds. We spent most of our time at the much quieter, indoor pool at the spa (found in the Levante building).

Room Tip: The rooms in the basement of the Levante building aren't good (dark, dingy and ours wasn't c...

stayed here on a Thompson package after a weeks Med cruise.

So easy to be transported around it was disappointing that our room was not ready but no fault of hotel as everyone was checking out right until 12:00hrs. The food was fantastic! Having not been all inclusive before we were a little trepidatious as with only one restaurant we thought it could be restrictive - how wrong. With five or six hot meals plus cooked fresh meat and fish every meal it was so hard to decide what to choose - all good quality, well presented and very fresh. We did eat at the a la carte on my birthday and this was equally well presented.

The second pool was great for our needs and very quite despite the hotel being full. I would echo others comments about drinks service at night but going to the bar solved this. ALL staff really freindly and helpful - in many languages.

Out of the way location which we thought would be a hassle but we had a car for a few days to do the wider island but the rest of the time we had no need to leave the resort.

One night excursion with Thompson - let down very badly with their service but then that's a package for you - no reflection on the hotel.

Room Tip: Our room was in the main building by the restaurant - great location - overlooking the terrace and p...

My partner and I came here at the end of July for a quick week away before starting a new job. We were looking forward to a restful week at the couples all inclusive hotel, but were disappointed that 'all inclusive' isn't strictly 'all inclusive'.

If you wanted a drink at a the 'quiet' pool then you had to pay for it! If you wanted to use any of the 'four poster' sunbeds - you had to pay for them as an extra - how is that all inclusive?

You also had to pay for a meal at the al a carte restaurant - although you did get 20% discount being a Thompson customer, but drinks were included.

Food
In the buffet restaurant was excellent - plenty of it, lots of choice and something to please everyone. The staff were attentive and really helpful, however it was meant to be air conditioned but was exceptionally hot, on day 2 we had to fill out a questionnaire and I suspect that everyone put down that it was hot in the restaurant because from day 3 the windows were open and it was a lot cooler.

The food in the al a carte restaurant was again excellent, and although we had to pay for the food we got the drinks included as part of the inclusive (so if it can work in the evening why can't it work during the day?)

We also went to the Tapas restaurant, and although the food was good, the service was a bit odd, you were shown to your table and we had to wait for all the other tables to be filled before we got a drink - only for a coke to be served in a jug - obviously it went flat very quickly!

Lunch around the main pool was, to say the least, embarrassing - we had the choice of one thing only on each day which consisted of either a hotdog, a hamburger, paella (which wasn't that great), fish & chips - if you wanted any salad you had to go to the buffet restaurant.

Afternoon snacks consisted of packet sandwiches and a few croissants - not really that appetizing.

Pool
Well for someone wanting a relaxing week away having to get up at 6.30am to ensure you got a sunbed was ridiculous - especially as by the time I got down to the pool at least 2 dozen sunbeds had already been taken. On one day the sunbeds in front of us had already been taken and the occupants didn't actually come out to the sunbeds until about 2pm - completely selfish on their part - at least my partner and I were sat on our sunbeds from 9.15'ish until about 4.30'ish.

Entertainment
Was good, both Kelly and Caz were excellent and couldn't be faulted - they were always happy but never pressurised you into doing anything. The in house singing duo were good, but felt that the music was very much 'soft rock' orientated - not our choice.

The only down side in the evening was the drinks service, it was so hit and miss, the waiters, who worked hard, seemed completely disorganised. They didn't have a set section of tables to look after and seemed to wander all over the place and then forgot who's drink was whose. We found that the best option was to get a drink at the bar, get a table, half way through the drink the waiter would come over and ask if we wanted another one, we said yes, at which point one of us would go to the bar and order another drink - we would get that drink, go back to the table and get half way through it before getting the drink ordered from the waiter. All it needs is numbers on the tables and the waiters having set tables to wait on - it really isn't rocket science.

Would we go back - no!

I think the hotel needs to make a decision on whether it's going to do all inclusive in the true sense or not - don't play at it.

Your feedback is very much appreciated and helps us spot weak points that need improvement. We will therefore pass your comments about the snack bar, the service in the a la carte restaurant and in the evening as well as the sunbed issue to the corresponding department, so they can look into them in more detail.
