Hesperia Mallorca Villamil
Ranked #2 of 52 Hotels in Peguera
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed August 31, 2012

Our four days in the beachside Hesperia Villamil, Peguera could have been a risk-laden trip down memory lane…my parents had taken me there twice in the early sixties, merely seven years or so after its construction. Its inevitable modernisation could have been a disappointment; maybe the old heart of the hotel had been ripped out?

Not at all. The Villamil retains all of the style and many of the furniture, fixtures and fittings of the past and the black and white photos lining the corridors and staircases tell their own story of the days when the hotel was a venue for the glamorous post-war smart set. Most pleasing of all is the retention of a wide, semi-circular terrace overlooking the sea; it’s arguably the hotel’s most attractive feature and is the perfect venue for pre or post-dinner drinks.

We occupied a junior suite with a sea view (room 221). It was spacious, comfortable and airy with an en-suite bathroom which might have been modern in the 1980s and therefore had a charm of its own.

The hotel has been considerably extended over the years but so have the grounds…there’s a lovely garden between the hotel extension and the sea and the beach itself is now sandy, wide and long; previously the waves used to lap against the rocks below the hotel wall.

The swimming pool however has not been expanded to cope with the extra guests and is therefore usually crowded, mostly with children and their inflatable swimming aids. Best to be nifty first thing with the towels on the loungers; Germans and British make up a large proportion of the clientele and the traditions of that contest for the prime pool-side spot remain a feature of the early morning routine!

The small size of the pool is a negative perhaps…except that the sheltered Peguera bay is effectively a massive swimming pool in its own right; children can wade for some thirty or forty metres before going out of their depth.

The food is not necessarily the hotel’s strongest suit…the buffet breakfasts are fine, taken on a terrace overlooking the garden and lunch (available in the garden) is also adequate. The hotel stages themed menus for dinner (barbeque and Italian food was available during our stay) but fine dining is only available on a limited number of evenings during the week.

This takes place in a smaller restaurant directly overlooking the beach. We ate well at what had to be the best table right by the open window …seafood was our obvious and delicious choice.

“Location, location, location” is as important a principle for the hotelier as for the estate agent and the Villamil holds prime position in Peguera. But the quality of the staff and their welcome is as important and the Villamil gets top marks for this too. From check-in to check-out, we were treated with courtesy and consideration.

A small but significant example; on our first night I placed a blanket under my one pillow for extra support - there didn’t seem to be another pillow available in the room – but the following day the maid had provided another pillow without it being requested. The hotel also organizes occasional functions; we were invited to a cocktail party on our first evening and also took a boat trip to see a spectacular sunset over the sea..

So I would recommend the Villamil as an ideal hotel for a family holiday….or for couples of a certain age. It does not specifically offer a vibrant night-life though the town is certainly lively enough after dark. In summary, you can be confident of a relaxing and comfortable stay in a hotel which retains much of the charm and character of a bygone age whilst also offering all the facilities you’d expect in the 21st century.

The hotel is rated as 4 stars & one can imagine the grandeur of the hotel when it first opened & Paguera was a destination. The hotel was clean but basic. Staff very friendly.

An evening drink at the bar was a lovely setting, but only peanuts or olives to eat. No snacks.

The swimming pool is rather small, but there is easy access to the beach.

Paguera is rather tacky.

Room Tip: Rooms in the newer extension facing the sea are probably the best.

I had a weekend stay in this hotel at Palma de Mallorca in June. I liked everything about it, room was good, facilities are cool, food was great but service was outstanding. People at all areas of the hotel made it to the best. I certainly recommend it. excellent...

There was a time when standards were being maintained and jeans, shorts, baseball caps and youths with their backsides hanging out of their trousers weren't allowed in the dining room - sadly those times and standards are long gone. The cuisine is still average (but a good breakfast choice) and could easily be better, but every effort is being spared from achieving this. It is quite easy to get a good deal and prices are and the area are slipping and so is the overall experience. Our booking, which was made well in advance, was mishandled and ruined the arrival experience and we had to negotiate hard to get what we had long ago asked for and booked. We shall sadly be looking elsewhere in the future. I would happily pay more if they would only turn the clock back to how things used to be.

Having spent all our childhood and teen summer holidays at the hotel, beginning way back in the late 50’s, it was wonderful to revisit. We’d returned for a couple of nights 14 years ago but not since.
We were delighted to see that the charm and character of the Villamil simply doesn’t change. Many of the staff remain and we’re now on to the next generation of some who have since retired. The building itself is traditional, not a purpose built box. There are a variety of rooms; some practically on the beach, some in the gardens, spacious rooms above the restaurant with lovely views and those within the oldest part of the hotel are quirky and individual.
The Villamil always has been an elegant hotel and this is reflected in its clientele which is perhaps a little more mature than the norm. Peguera is predominantly a German resort with the hotel’s guests being mainly German, British and Russian. At this time of year there were no children evident but I’m sure that changes in the school holiday season.
Breakfast – as every other meal unfortunately – is self-service. It’s taken on the terrace outside the main restaurant. The choice of food is extensive. Everything you could wish for from fried eggs and bacon, omelettes, fruit, yoghurts, cold meats, cheeses, cereals, fruit juices, many different breads and pastries – and, of course, a glass of Cava is a great way to start the day!
The swimming pool is not large but fine for a dip to cool off and have a chat with other loiterers. With the sea just a few steps away there’s plenty of opportunity for a good swim. The shore is very safe and shallow for quite a distance.
The sunbathing area around the pool is not vast. You (or your dear husband) have to get up at the crack of dawn to put down towels if you want to sit in a particular spot. Having said that, there’s also a lovely peaceful area behind the beach, under the trees and, of course, the beach itself. The gardens are beautifully tended with a stream and fountains and meandering pathways. Lunch is taken on the terrace behind the pool. There’s a wonderful hot and/or cold buffet daily plus a variety of other substantial dishes or snacks.
Three times a week there’s a small Pilates class which is excellent, particularly if you’re familiar with the technique. It’s conducted in both German and English so you have to concentrate not only on what you’re doing but also on catching the instruction in your own language!
Pre-dinner drinks are served on the terrace overlooking the bay. A magical view which has never changed and is evocative of the Villamil experience.
Dinner in the main dining room comprises a cold starter with a vast selection. The meals are a different theme or nationality each day. There’s always soup, plus the main course which continues the theme and again, the choice of hot dishes is more than adequate for all tastes. Desserts and cheese round off the meal.
After dinner there is usually some musical entertainment on the terrace and it’s good to see many couples taking to the dance floor. This was mainly catering for the older generation who were prominent but I’m sure it’s adapted to the age of guests at any particular time.
The weekly pre-dinner Manager’s Cocktail Party is worth the effort of getting ‘dressed’ a little earlier. A glass or two of cava, some interesting nibbles and meet the delightful Manager and Guest Relations lady. Also a good opportunity to chat with other guests though many appear to prefer to sit down, which does defeat the purpose somewhat!
Twice a week there’s an evening barbecue – one is fish and the other is meat which is cooked to order while you wait. Wonderful quality of ingredients perfectly cooked.
We also went on the weekly evening boat trip which is arranged by the hotel. A short walk around the bay to get on the boat and you head off to see adjacent coves and beaches. There’s a bit of commentary in various languages which tells you where you are. After a while the boat drops anchor, you have a cold buffet and there’s also a cash bar. If they feel like it, the crew may entertain you with a song as you enjoy the complimentary Cava. Fun to do something different and more casual for a change.
Certainly the Villamil will always be a special place. I don’t think I’m being biased in that it holds so many personal memories for me. It’s evident that many people return year after year which must speak volumes.

We hate choosing hotels cos there is so much choice and it can really irritate if you get it wrong.Well we didn't get it wrong because this hotel was great from the moment we stepped in the hotel, tired and grumpy after a short flight. The reception staff were excellent and that has been a theme for our short stay, very friendly, helpful staff. The room is great, quite big with a safe ,a fridge a good shower and bath and a lovely balcony overlooking beautiful grounds and the sea.
We were on bed and breakfast and what an excellent breakfast it was with everything you could wish for including fantastic fruit that saw me tempted....but to be fair the eggs cooked to order, the pancakes and sausages were just as good...as was the fresh orange juice and cava....the hotel is on the beach but also has ample beds next to a pool...the pool isn't over large but the sea is ample...didn't need to get up at 0530 hrs to wrestle beds from the Germans...shame really! Apparently the restaurant is very good too but we prefer to explore and we found some quite superb places but I'll let you explore...

My husband and I enjoyed a long weekend at the Hesperia Villamil in July along with my parents. The hotel is in a great location directly on Paguera beach, which is a nice, with shallow waters for swimming.
The hotel is wonderfully furnished and first impressions were good. We had room 219 which was on the second floor. The room was a good size and had the biggest balcony I've seen. This was great for the late evening sun! The room and bathroom were clean and comfortable. I thought it would have been nice to have a bottle of water in your room on arrival and a minibar. The minibar fridge was there but it was empty.
My parents initially were shown a basement room which was much smaller and had strong drain smells, they asked to move and were shown to a room on the 2nd floow with the no balcony. Again a move was requested and the next day they moved to a ground garden view room with balcony which was much better.
The Hotel breakfast was great, a buffet selection of foods which covered most tastes and was of quality. The service was also fantastic in the mornings.
The pool area was lovely and clean and there were always plenty of sunbeds to use.
The hotel put a sparkling wine in the room for my mum on her birthday which was a nice touch. The management also do a sparling wine and canape evening on the Monday for all the guests to mingle which was unexpected and really good. We ate at the hotel twice and both times the food was of good quality. I would go back to the hotel again, overall it's a good standard.
The only thing that I was not so keen on was the immediate area of Paguera. I realise Majorca has it's touristy area's so I was expecting it, I was disappointed by the lack of authentic Spanish restuarants/bars. This is really fast food street and I struggled to see anything remotely spanish offering local cusine and tapas. Paguera was probably not the best area to pick in that respect. My husband and I did hire a bike and went to Santa Ponsa, Calvia and Portal Nous. We also visited St Illetes beach which was pretty. We did find one restuarant which I would recommend in the area called La Gritta. Overall good hotel, to a good standard, both comfotable and relaxing. Area not great if you're looking for some/any authentic Spain!

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view, or room with a balcony.
