“Great visit”
Reviewed October 14, 2012

We had a wonderful few days at this small hotel in the Mallorca hills. The hotel has its own olive grove with lovely walks. The food was excellent with a small table d'hôte menu each day plus a larger a la carte menu available. You are asked to select your choice in advance and everything is freshly cooked. Our room was small but we had booked at the last minute and it was the only one available. It was comfortable with a small balcony. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We will be back.

Room Tip: Try to get a room with a terrace.

I wanted to give this finca a "good" rating but the TA system doesn't have anything between average and very good. In some respects it was very good, but it was let down in others, which is why I have rated it as only average.
The location is great if, like us, you appreciate tranquility and lovely views. However, you can have too much of a good thing and it would have been nice if it had been a little livelier in the evenings. At times the atmosphere was self-conscious, with people speaking in hushed tones - somewhat reminiscent of breakfast time in so many English B&Bs. A bar with music playing where people could socialise with other guests would help in this regard.
In general the staff was efficient and quite friendly, although some were not particularly engaging. Be prepared to carry your suitcases to and from your room. I am sure they would help if it was requested, but they didn't seem about to offer.
The food and service at breakfast were very good. The young lady that waited on us most mornings was very attentive and pleasant.
The lunch menu is very limited and uninspiring, but this wasn't so much of an issue for us as we went for drives most days and had lunch out.
We were very unimpressed with the dinner we had on the first night. One of our main courses was inedible and the other was mediocre. Definitely not value for money. There are plenty of good restaurants not too far away in Port Soller, but the drive there includes 25 minutes of sharp switchbacks over the mountain and I wasn't keen on the idea of driving back in the dark after a glass or two of the local vino. Fortunately, there are a couple of good restaurants a short walk away in the village. It would definitely have marred our week had we had to dine at the finca every evening.
We found the beds very comfortable and were not disturbed by noise from neigbouring rooms. Our bedroom was quite spacious, but it had just one smallish window and was rather gloomy. Storage space for clothes was not generous. The wardrobe was OK but a chest of drawers wouldn't have gone amiss.
It was great to be able to walk directly from the property, although be warned that the tracks into the hills are pretty rough and rocky in places so you need proper footwear.
The pool is on the small side but it didn't get too busy while we were there so that was OK. What was not OK was the temperature. As with so many hotels in Spain it was too cold. When you are paying €200 and up per night you tend to think it wouldn't hurt if the owners heated the pool to a more comfortable level.
All in all we had a relaxing and agreeable break, but I am not sure we will return.

Room Tip: Choose a room with a private patio or a balcony so you can sit outside. Our room had neither and the...

Dear client
Thank you for your stay in our small finca hotel. We're a little sad we could not meet their high expectations but customers like you help us improve our service.

Anyway I would like to answer your critiques in order to future customers can decide if your review is objective or entirely subjective.

Pool: Son Palou has a pool of 10 meters long and 9 wide. Our pool is not heated and our web site does not appears anything about heated pool, then when you booked the finca you already knew it. The temperature of the pool depends on the season/weather. Particularly this summer has been one of hottest for 20 years with temperatures up to 38 degrees, keeping in mind that you came to beginnings of September and that no customer has ever complained about the temperature of the pool , I would like to consider his criticism not true or overdone

Wardrobe: Well, I think your opinion is very subjective. The wardrobe of room , where you slept 5 nights, is 2.30 meters high, 1.5m wide and 70 cm deep. It has 2 drawers.

Dinner. As you know, our kitchen is very loved among all of our customers who have written reviews. It is a shame you did not like our dinner ( you ate once at night in the whole stay) other hand we are very happy to hear that there are good restaurants in our village apart us
Lunch: Our lunch carte consists: 5 different types of salad, 4 types of sandwiches, Tuna Wraps, Beef Warps and Curry wraps and 4 types of homemade cakes .. You tried only two almond cakes you barely ate. Sincerely, to evaluate our kitchen as mediocre you should have eaten more than 3 times.

Suitcases. I asked why they were not helped bringing you your suitacases to the room by your check in day . The reason is : The receptionist who works on Sundays (day of your check in) are over 55 years and can not bear weight. For future customers, all other days of the week, we have our waiter or myself will help to carry the bags.

Live music: We take note, we consider an interesting option if it does not affect the quietness of our small hotel.

Clients: I think you made a comment about the tone of our client´s voice . Our customers are very educated and respcet the tranquility that surrounds our farm, that is perhaps one of the reasons, but anyway I think your comments is not very relevant to review a hotel. If you try to describe the atmosphere from Son Palou you would have to say “ people is very quiet and want to relax, do not expect nightlife “

Bar: My opinion is that a 14-room property is not a Hotel 200 therefore does not have to have a proper bar but anyway in all the terraces and lounges you have the option to have a drink requesting it to me, to the recepcionits or to the waiter that we have from 08.00 am till 23.30. pm.
Under my opinion It would be not possible to review our Hotel because the water of the swimmin pool is a little fresh, the wardrobe in not XL wardrobe, the lady at the reception did not help to carry two suitcase to the room, and the tone of the clients´s voices is too slow…
I think your expectations are a for 5 star hotel, not a fourteenth century manor house renovated in 2002 preserving its character.
A 5 star hotel would cost more than 200€ daily
Thank you any way and hope to see you in next future

This was our second visit (not something we usually do) but loved the hotel so much last year that we had to return. Our large suite with two terraces was fabulous and just as we would have expected from such an hotel. Breakfast is taken outside in a small courtyard and is everything you would wish for. Dinner (weather permitting) is served on a pretty terrace with wonderful food served by very attentive staff. The views are breathtaking and there is a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere. We will return for a third time.

Son Palou is nestled in the tiny village of Orient, far from the madding crowds of mainstream Majorca. You won't find any tour buses and day trippers here. The roads are too twisty and the location too inaccessible. If you're looking for sophisticated peace and tranquility then this is the place for you.
Our standard room was well appointed and entirely adequate for our two night stay. The service was much more than adequate. Lunch and dinner were served outside on the terrace and the food was delicious.
This is a small family hotel with a big heart. The property is full of historic features and the grounds are extensive.
Highly recommended unless you're sort of person who craves the hustle and bustle of the city on your vacation.

Hotel Son Palou has about 16 rooms, all with the most superb views you will see in Mallorca. The standard of each room does vary a bit, but they are all very good. Try to make sure you get a room with a balcony. Access is via a winding road of good quality, then as you go through the small village of Orient (after the second sharp bend), the entrance is on the left. Parking is adequate at best, but manageable. Breakfast is superb, served in a beautiful courtyard. Free papers are available in several languages. Lunch and dinner are a bit expensive, but good value for money, with the menu changing daily. The restaurant is lovely, again with beautiful views. Drinks are not cheap, but proportionate for this type of establishment. The minibar, unfortunately including tea and coffee is very expensive. Do not book via an agent, but go directly onto the Son Palou website where you will save 10%. They also give 6% discount for cash payment as opposed to credit card. You will need a car as Son Palou is in the middle of nowhere. This is a walker's paradise, so don't forget to take binoculars. We have already booked again for next year (2013).

Only stopped for lunch, but what a wonderful spot! The hotel is small and in a really peaceful spot in the middle of the mountains. The owner was on-site and was super-attentive; the staff was very good, as well.

The food was some of the best we've had on the island, and the view is to die for. Sitting outside was lovely, thought there were a fair amount of bees.

For us, this was an amazing find, in early September, after many years of visiting one of the Deia hotels. The situation is idyllic and the views of the valley are wonderful. This is a place to find peace and total relaxation. The standards are high, rooms well appointed and very clean, and the
food was, in our opinion, excellent. Dining outside, under the stars, was one of the highlights. All this under the watchful eyes of Marc (the manager, whose enthusiasm and dry humour, we found infectious) and his super team.
If we found any faults at all they were trivial.
