10 of us stayed at Sotavento Apartments for our first girls holiday and it was lovely! The rooms were clean, the food was lovely, the drinks were cheap and cheerful, the bar staff and reps were very polite and welcoming. The reception desk was always helpful and the security guard was lovely! There was entertainment all day every day and only a 2 min walk away from the beach! I would recommend this hotel to friends aged 18-30.

Only downside was the humungous hill the you had to go up and down to get to the strip!

Room Tip: Pool view rooms are lovely.

I stay here late june with three friends we had a lovely room that had a pool view and i didn't find it that noisy during the day which was great.
Everyone mentions how great the stay was however i cant really comment as the only times i talked to staff was when we were ordering food or checking in and out. (its 20 euro deposit which you get back at the end of the holiday and you have to pay for the safe but i can't remember how much-sorry)

Such a great location pretty much on the strip but because of the massive hill you cant hear any noise which i thought was brilliant. i had read reviews about this hill and thought people were exaggerating it, they honestly aren't.
If you are wanting a hotel that you cant bring girls/guys back to after a night out then this is not the place as you have to have wristbands to get in at night but during the day they dont check.

If you are planning a cheap holiday and cooking in the apartment DON'T the pans etc in our room was minging, the best places to eat are on the shore front however they are a bit more pricey than other places.

The only thing i can say is bad about this hotel is that you have to pay for wifi but bar that this is a super hotel and a great holiday

Just stayed here for 3 nights only 2 of us girls went for the weekend and thought we might be a bit bored but all staff and guests were really lovely and welcoming. There was never a dull moment at Sotavento. Bar staff were nice and chatty, reps were great, receptionists were very pleasant and security man was very kind. I went to Magaluf not expecting to be in my hotel a lot but because it was so brill, this is where we spent most of our stay. It was more than what we expected. I've got to admit it's our best holiday yet! I've always said I'd never return to the same holiday because I prefer to explore but after being here I don't want to ever go anywhere else.

This hotel was as close to perfect as we could of got. The staff were friendly, the food was amazing, the rooms were nicely decorated, clean and well equipped and the pool and DJ was the best place to spend the day. The only bad things and the reason I haven't given a 5 star rating are that you have to pay extra for Wi-Fi and to watch TV, there's only a sheet on the bed, which when sharing with 6 girls and half of them wanting the air-con on and half off just wasn't enough and the prices if you broke anything were extortionate. Other than that I would definitely recommend this hotel to any young people going to Magaluf.

Just returned from a great week at Sotavento on a girls holiday, however I had a sickness bug the whole week (from day 1) and the reception staff were very kind to me whilst my friends were out having fun at night(especially Enrique),and helped me to find local pharmacies etc.
Hotel shop wasn't very varied and was quite pricey, yet we soon found a SPAR 1 minute down the road which was brilliant so we went there instead.
Restaurant extremely good value and very easy-especially for days by the pool to pop and get some lunch so we ate there all the time.
Upon our arrival we were suddenly told that we had to pay a 27 euro deposit, which was understandable and fine, but was quite sudden and impromptu as we weren't previously aware.
Security was FANTASTIC at night- on my last (and only night out!!) some boys began talking to myself and a friend, who wanted to follow us into the hotel,to which the security guard made sure they were escorted off the premises and that we got into the hotel safe.Very impressive.
Found the hill much better than the other reviews claim that it was.
Our maid was blonde and very spanish, yet was still kind and chatty to me and my friends and made an effort to talk to us.
The inventory and deposit were understandable, yet some of the prices for replacing an old toaster /bathroom hairdryer were extortionate!! However we did break a glass and it was only 2 euros to replace.
Our shower also got blocked halfway through our stay and reception arranged for a handyman to fix it at our convenience the next morning as it wasn't our fault.
Overall a great trip at Sotavento (despite my sickness and lone night out),to which I would love to return and this time experience Magaluf to the full!

Room Tip: People on here claim that rooms at the back of the hotel are quieter due to less noise from the pool...

Booked this hotel based on its tripadvisor reviews, however our incident must be completely isolated (which I doubt), or the bad reviews are not released. On arrival at check in, and after waiting for about 20-25 minutes for a receptionist to become available (why not have 2 during busy periods, or simply another person who is authorised to check people in when the hotel is busy?) we were given our room keys, payed for a safety deposit box and we're given wristbands that we were told gave us discounts in certain bars and in the hotels restaurant (and this is ALL we were told regarding the wristbands). We enter the room and its clear that it is a 4 person room, with an extra bed squeezed into the apartment. Straight away we return to reception, politely show them our hotel vouchers again ("To be exchanged for a 6 person apartment") and they tell us we will have to wait for a different room. This is no problem, we did arrive on a morning flight so I expected their check out time to not be for a few hours. They told us to stay in the room we had been given until then. They return about 30 minutes later to tell us the hotel is fully booked, and this is our room. When I indicate to him (he is the Reception Manager) that his sheet infront of him says our lead booking name and a "A6" next to it (instead of the "A4" we have been given), he asks me what he wants me to do about it, regarding the fact this is the only room we can have in the hotel. I couldn't believe what I was hearing, or their justification. He told me that because on lowcostholidays.com, we ticked the "pool view, high floor" boxes on the "special request" part of the booking, we therefore obviously prioritise a pool view over the number of beds and space available we wanted. After paying an under occupancy fee for the room through lowcost, and paying for a room that is clearly more expensive than the one we've been given, I complained again and after many hopeless shrugs from two reception staff was told to go into the managers office.

The manager, though very calm and relaxed, is possibly the most patronising person of all the very patronising staff there. He told me that preferences are always met at the hotel, and that "many people ask us for a 4 person pool view room with an extra bed in". However, we are not "many people", we were not contacted at any point prior to arrival to be asked if we would like a 4 person room with a guaranteed pool view. Yet apparently, this was a "favour". A favour is an upgrade or another choice, yet they didn't have a 6 person room we booked available (strange "favour"). Clearly they are too overbooked and have had to compromise. Because we are 5 young girls I assume they thought we would not want to complain. There are 6 bed apartments with pool views, they were given to the big group of lads who checked in before us. Thats fine, don't give us any of our requests, we were not expecting them to be guaranteed, we expected the room we paid for. The spanish speaking manager of the hotel then implied of us of complaining because we "wanted free drinks"?

I have never known such brazen bad service in my life. I work within the hotel industry, and although the 4 star international branded hotel I work in is a little different to a 3 star in a party resort, customer service is the same anywhere within the hospitality industry. If I ever dared to speak to customers the same way the staff at Sotavento spoke to me and my group, I would be fired on the spot. Them giving us the wrong room and then justifying it by our hotel preferences because they are clearly overbooked and have messed up on their rooms, is all our fault according to their staff.

The 4 bed room they gave us wasn't cleaned, and had grime all over its shelf and sand throughout the shower. The screen door was broken, when I complained that we couldn't leave the room, the managers response was "Who is going to break in at that height?". A technician fixed it quickly, however why this wasn't checked before they gave the room out I can't understand. They completely ruined our first day as we spent so long chasing up the room we actually paid for, then the next day, a receptionist knocked on our door and asked if we were ready to move to our 6 bedroom ground floor apartment (they very much emphasise the ground floor bit, to put us off wanting the room we ordered) at 9am. However we were told we would be waiting until 12pm so clearly hadn't got ready yet. None of their staff seem to speak to one another as neither can clarify what they can actually do for customers and at what times.

The room we were given was the complete opposite of our preferences (I wonder why) but at this point didn't care at all as we had the room we paid for. It was one of the older ones as it didn't follow the same interior shown on the website but atleast it had enough plates, cups for us all and enough space. The deposit they make you pay and the long list of things that could be broken? I have no idea why its in place. Orange hand prints on white curtains, make up smears covering the bedroom walls, faulty shower head that fell down whilst I was in there and a badly concealed permanent marker grafitti tag on the sofa (covered with cushions and failingly tried to bleached out) makes me wonder where all that deposit and security payments go? Make sure you notify the receptionist so they do not blame you (though ours just shrugged and mumbled an "okay").

Security is one of the only things I will give the hotel. There are camera's everywhere and the backgate (which our room was next to), is motion censored and monitored to allow people in and out. Security guard stands at the entrance of the hotel from 12-7. The one at the start of our week (thurs - sun) was very pleasant (gave you the once over just to check you werent too noisy or troublesome), the one toward the end of our week was rude and marched my friend into reception when she didn't have a wristband on (note: the receptionist who checked us in never told us it was needed for security purposes, and the previous security guard had no qualms with quite a few people who entered without wristbands), when the night receptionist (wears glasses, has a mark under his eye) was looking for my friends picture on the rooms list, he said he could not find it, I said (not at all in bitterness) "oh its 105, they just gave us the wrong room". He turned to me, stopped what he was doing and said "No, no, I think WE offered to change the room for YOU". How on earth the reviews exclaim about brilliant staff I do not understand. So be careful if you want friends staying in other hotels to visit your room, dependant on which security guard is on they may/ may not be allowed, this didnt bother me and did make the hotel more safe - some people didn't know about this however. Nothing went missing from our security box as I've seen mentioned in another review, and apart from the hiccup with the wristbands, I always felt very safe in the hotel (despite being on a ground floor apartment - something which such places as uni halls refuse to place groups of girls into for safety purposes).

The maids are the hotels best asset from what I saw, ours was absolutely lovely and couldn't do enough for you. She visited once in the week, I'm not sure how many times they are supposed to clean the place (they cannot enter if you're apartment is too dirty, in defence before the claim is made, we never left the apartment too messy to be mopped).

You are worrying in the apartment when you use anything incase you get a mark on something or break it (I can understand deposits because of the resort type, but the prices to replace a toaster thats come from the other side of the 90's is pretty steep) and once again, cannot see where any deposit money goes when people do mark stuff.

The hill is abit of a killer but the apartments have a nice sea view in places, the supermarket is a pretty reasonable price in comparison with the rest of them, there is also another shop if you follow the back of the hotel that means you dont have to carry bottles up the hill.

Book through their website, the manager told me he "knew about the special requests because he wrote them", not sure when he started programming the lowcostholidays.com website but okay. He told me to be grateful as a pool room view is extra (on their website, not on lowcost) and seems to assume everyone knows the hotels own booking system and never books through another agent (who do not tell you about the deposit, the way preferences are handled or who allow you to pay extra for certain rooms).

Restaurant service was good in the evening, in the morning was slow and forgot to give us butter and then forgot to give us warm toast when ours had gone freezing cold waiting.

If this review is even published I assume I will be labelled as a complete liar or a trouble maker by the hotel manager, however I am not someone who overly complains. I only asked for what we paid for (PAID for, not put in special requests, we did not PAY for a 4 bed room with an extra bed pushed in and a pool view). I assume I will be told I should have notified reception of every problem, I did for most things and was met with shrugs or dirty looks as I know they had already seen us as trouble makers.

In closing, although many people believe the staff are lovely and are only their to give them the best holiday. The apartments are a business and are pushed to make as much money as possible and (because they are popular) are booked too close to their full capacity and this is obviously when problems occur, deposits are taken for damage and marks that are never rectified. A shame that our initial problem caused us to take every other one more seriously, yet I couldn't believe the way we had been handled by staff or their justification.

Room Tip: If you do want some sleep, try and ask for a back room. Strip bars can be heard until 6am from the f...

Hi Helen,

With the risk of sounding "patronising" once again (I am the manager you spoke to at the hotel), I would like to put forward the hotels views on the events during your stay.

Firsty we have NO control over Tripadvisor and they publish all genuine reviews without hotel intervention.

You and your party made a special request for a room with pool view. As discussed when you came to see me we try our very best to fufill the special requests made by our guests. We thought that by giving you the request that you had asked for it would make your holiday more enjoyable.

As you explained in our office, by doing this we "ruined" your friendship as some of the girls wanted to stay in the room with the pool view and you with another of the girls wanted to move.

I apologised then and we apologies again but we were only ever trying to fulfill your request. We immediately offered to change your reservation to a room with 6 beds for your party of 5 but this would have to be the next day as all the rooms for 6 had been allocated at this time. You told me you needed to talk to your friends as some wanted stay and others moved. I was later viisted by another of your friends who also accused us of ruining your friendship as she wanted to stay in the room with the pool view and you wanted to move. I again confirmed we would move you tomorrow morning and she agreed that this is what we would do.

For your information and as re-confirmaiton we do NOT have any rooms for 6 people that face the pool or have sea views, your statement in your review is therefore totally incorrect.

The hotel manager who offered you and your friends a free drink at the end of our conversation was making the offer in an attempt to get you and your friends together and we said at the time to help you draw a line under the room change and start afresh with your holiday - this was only offered to try and get your friendship "back on track".

In reality we tried to give you the type of room (with a pool view) you had asked for, when you told us you did not like or want this type of room we offered to change it as soon as possible,

I am disappointed that you found the attitude of our team to be unfriendly and as you yourself elude to in your review almost every other review compliments us on the fantastic service and atmosphere our entire team create. Looking at over 60 reviews we have recieved this summer it is puzzling that this is the first review that mentions such an issue and the same team have been in place since April!

We take the security and safety of all our guests very seriously and introduced the Sotavento wristband 2 years ago as a way of easily picking out "non-guests" who may be in the hotel. Our reception use the same "script" at check in for all guests which includes wearing the band at all times. I am sorry that you did not hear this, however you are the first person this summer who has raised this as an issue so I can only assume that the procedures we have in place are working.

It seems from your review that by trying to give you the requested pool view you asked for has had a negative impact on your overall opinion of Sotavento. However in fairness to all of the team at the hotel we resolved the problem and allocated you the room for 6 people early the following morning. I will apologies once again if you felt this was in someway misleading but I can only confirm that we acted with what we thought was the best interests of your party.

Regards.

Peter.

IF YOU HATE HILLS DON'T GO HERE - It's an absolute killer.
Be careful on beach and generally - 2 of us mugged during the week.

5 of us paid for a 6 bedroom hotel, and because there was only 5 of us we had to pay an under occupancy for not filling the room. On arrival there was a group in front of us and we was instructed to wait in reception where we was waiting for at least 25 minutes. When we got into the room we noticed there was only 5 beds and the room was extremley cramped, we had then realised that there was an extra bed that had just been forced into the two bedroom. Even if we wanted to stay in this apartment there would have been absolutely no room for 5 girls to do so, there was no room to sit in front of the mirror at all. Also when we went into the bathroom it hadn't been cleaned well there was still sand in the shower. When we were first going through papers in reception we had to sign forums to declare if we was to break anything or even get towels dirty we would have to pay for the replacements which is absolutely fine however there were things in this apartment that were damaged, such as the curtain and stains on the wall. Where does the money go when people have to replace those items? Eventually we were told that the hotel was fully booked so we couldn't move apartment until the next morning. Which is what we did as there was physically not enough room for any of us. There was only a kettle and a toaster, no microwave. Paid 25 euros for Wifi, which my iPod continuoulsy lost connection and was incredibly slow. Also no one in the apartment was able to iMessage due to the connection. In my opinion if we was given the correct room to begin with we would have definitely enjoyed our holiday much more. They said that we had been given the right room because we had a pool view apartment, when we had booked the apartment there was a preference of a poolside view HOWEVER we did not pay/demand for it, therefore we should have given us the room of which we actually paid for. When we checked in we was given wristbands for the apartment which we were told could get us discounts in bars locally, however we wasn't told that we had to wear them all the time. I myself don't like to wear them all the time because I don't like to get tan lines during the day. One night we came back from a night out and the security guard made me stand at reception shouting at me because I aparently didn't stay at that hotel. I was humiliated and the receptionist that was working the night shift was asking me what my problem was when I had explained I was upset about the way the security guard shouted at me. I think that the security is great however I shouldn't have been spoken to like that when I wasn't aware that we had to wear the wristbands to get into the apartment.

The food service was bad, we ordered breakfast and we waited ages just for butter so I explained the toast was cold and they agreed to make us some fresh, must have been waiting ten minutes for my toast when I went inside and said wheres the toast, and they said 'oops he must of forgot' by the time the toast had came all of our breakfasts were freezing cold.

I think its a genuine shame because the pool area is beautiful and the vibes are great. It is a nice hotel but I think that we were mistreated with the room.

Room Tip: dont 'preference' anything it will properly mess up your whole booking.
