Tried the restaurant plenty of times over the last couple of years since we live on the island since 2005. Out of the 30+ visits, 25 at least were negative. So we decided to write a review. Today was another very negative experience....
Service was "unmotivated" - to say the least - arrogant
The fries had to be sent back because of hair in the bowl
They smelled like fish - looks like they use the same oil for fries and fish.....and the veal schnitzel as well that had the same taste
After all these years we decided not to go back anymore.

We tried to get into Flanigan last minute on a Saturday night. Unsurprisingly they were full but the concierge said their new sister restaurant Unico had space.

Unico has been created upstairs and accessed by lift. It’s a beautiful space with just eight tables set out around the terrace overlooking the big yachts and harbour. I like the hustle, bustle and buzz of Flanigan and being just one floor up was amazingly calm. They’ve clearly spent a lot of money up here and tried a new model that’s very different to Flanigan downstairs. In its present form it doesn’t work well and I doubt will last without major changes.

The concept revolves around fish (a few meat dishes are available) prepared in various ways to suit the diner but in our experience with little actual choice. Our waiter was so enthusiastic about his offering that he ignored our requests and pretty much insisted that he would bring what he thought best in the order he suggested.

We’d already pored over the menu and decided on our dishes but we came to an agreement which seemed to keep him happy, stating however that we didn’t want one particular starter. It came anyway. We sent it back to make a point. He excitedly recommended two wines for the six of us. The first was 179 euros. We declined.

They have fish dishes from Peru, Japan, and local flavours. He didn’t want to mix the flavours so we had to wait dish by dish for six starters. Okay if the kitchen is on top form, but this took two hours. I’ve had pre-Nobu Peruvian fish dishes in South America and much prefer the Nobu-ised versions popular now in many London and New York restaurants. Unico’s were okay, but missed something here.

Our waiter exalted the fact that there were only 8 tables and that they aren’t turned; just one booking for the evening. That sounds like a positive, but it breaks the first law of a modern premium restaurant. Atmosphere is more important than food. Yes, food has to be good. But good food in a great atmosphere always beats great food in a dead atmosphere. Especially a dead atmosphere that you’re chained to, and starving in, because the staff aren’t organised.

For mains we shared two large sea bass cooked in salt crust. These were beautifully prepared and served with various vegetables. By now it was well past midnight and we didn’t risk ordering desserts as an early breakfast, so ended on coffees. 630 Euros for six with one aperitif and a bottle of inexpensive Rose. Not cheap. I’ll be returning to Flanigan. Not to Unico.

A great value breakfast, fresh juice, pastries, toast, bacon, eggs, tomato, rolls, coffee or tea for €10 in possibly the finest setting looking over Portals. Haven't eaten here at night for a while, you would be advised to ask the price of the specials, we were a bit shocked at the price of one of their fish dishes when a bill arrived one night.

Flanigan is one of our favorite resturants, or it used to be. We just had lunch there and the spanish ham, which used to be great was very poor, you could see that is was cut by maschine.!! The paella was over done and tasted "funny" like it was made yesterday. Maybe its because the season is ending or maybe they changed the kitchen staff, I dont know, but Flanigan Portals is not what is used to be, what a pitty!
