We booked through first choice as we have done for years, it's advertised as a 3 star plus, which it is not! We have both travelled all over the world and stayed in some cheap hotels and some very nice hotels so we are adaptable but when you book an all inclusive based on the information your given then you expect it to be as advertised,
Well it's not, the place is very old and tired, the so call bungalows are no more than a single skin shed with poor lighting and even poorer bathrooms, they are very dark and dingy looking inside, our one was extra horrible due to the fact the ceiling fan(no air con) was hanging off the ceiling at an angle and the mattress smelt of stale cigarette smoke! The beds look in the pictures on the website as 2 nice doubles and infant are 2 singles, the complex is very spread out and it all runs around a single road which has a mini bus service nice touch but if your shed is next to the road then all you get is people and cars all night walking past your patio door which a 5 year old could open with a screw driver !
The pool is small but clean, the pool bar is awful, it has what appears to be old blue tarps which are holed and frayed being used for sun shade, again in the pics it's got nice white purpose made sail type ones, the bar looks dirty and had plenty of flys and wasps crawling over the beer taps, the furniture is old and grubby.
The reception again old dated and smelt musty, the outside of the buildings and general areas tidy enough, the smell of the drains was always constant and the whiff was around most of the time.
The bar and the resteraunt are up a big flight of stairs (my partner is 5 months pregnant) all though very mobile not ideal, the resteraunt was old, tired, not very appealing and the food was the pretty much the same, my partner is vegetarian and being pregnant limits her somewhat but they didn't cater really unless you like cold meat or hot meat !
The staff friendly enough unless your the manager will come to that later.
The bar area is again tired and shabby, the entertainment area the same, the outside terrace is too small to accommodate all guests and it has no area provided for non smokers(both ex smokers so not an issue for us normally but 5 months pregnant would be nice to get a smoke free area)
The place is on a beach but you have to pay for sun loungers to use on the beach, no pool towels provided but you can buy them at an inflated price on site !
Unless your a rock climber then your pretty much stuck as the path goes over the cliff to the next hotel etc.
So we complained to our rep at 11.30 am the next day, told he would sort it out and we wanted to get moved, expressed all of the above to him and he was totally out of his depth, we both work as senior management in customer services so we know how to react and how to deal with people, clearly he didn't ! When challenged he got defensive and then tried to challenge us on the issues, until we pointed out that we would be happy to pay to move hotels then all of the sudden his attitude changed, so with that he called holiday line and started to things moving, now 1.40 pm, we found a hotel with another lovely couple who had the same issues we had and chose to move with them as it would be cheaper to share a cab ride with them and they had more to say than we did ! I'm sure they will leave a review as well.
The rep was then on his mobile on and off until 4.30 saying they where busy and he had to leave as he had a welcome meeting to hold, er no Sam you sort this out please, I can't my manager has told me I have to leave, I will give you holiday lines details and they will get it sorted.
Whilst the afternoon progressed Sam did tell us his manager hated this hotel, he often moves people from here, and he was infact the only one who liked the hotel !
So then we call holiday line, get through to a girl called Hannah, she was professional, polite, and managed to do what Sam couldn't do in 5.5 hours which was get us a price and get us reservations at a new hotel, she was simply superb, also she or non of her colleagues had been made aware that my partner is 5 months pregnant and hadn't eaten properly due to the lack of food options for her.
Now for the manager, whilst looking for a new hotel earlier in the day we sat at reception on the computer, whenvsam went to ask the manger for a wifi pass code the manager started ranting the why is it the English always complain, the Germans don't, always the damn English ! He went on to get very expressive about the English and how we expect to much !
Well mr manager, your so called hotel is poor, very poor indeed, your attitude alone is enough to make anyone want to stay elsewhere, the place is a 2 star, inact the German website is more correct and it's also classed as a holiday club not a hotel so that's why you get don't get complaints from our German cousins because they know what they are booking!
The rest of the staff are polite and nice enough, the manager needs to think about a new career maybe!
The place is not nice, it's a cheap no frills 2 star , no more no less.
Go look elsewhere if you want a decent stay in Majorca

The Tropicana is remote, within the Calas de Mallorca area. It is mainly laid to chalets with beautifully landscaped gardens throughout. Most chalets are accessible by foot, but in the extreme distance (which to be fair isn't that far away) there is a regular minibus service. The staff are friendly, attentive, professional and very hard working. The food and drink are plentiful and whilst not five star Michelin, is very good for the mass - and continual - catering they provide. I was a little concerned after reading some reviews; I really can't see the reason for such negative reviews. Salad will be samey, breakfast will be samey, no-one can be that inventive with tomato and lettuce or egg on toast. The evening service always has something different with the soup, hot food and with the pates or meats to accompany your meal. The pool is large, clean and there really are sunbeds for everyone around the complex. The chalets are spacious clean and functional. I've read complaints about the beach. It's a public beach and there are many signs saying so, and state the all inclusive ends before the beach. And to be honest €3 or so for a 50cl of Estrella is not excessive. The beach, cave and water are clean. This is a place for people who like to escape, like to socialise with other holiday makers and are open minded on what to expect. There are excursions, which I would recommend you look at before you arrive via either no frills or click mallorca; these companies also collect and return you so the remoteness is not an issue. Even if you do want to walk to Calas proper, it's 30 minutes max via the coastal route. It is over rocks as per previous reviews, but this is a very minor part of the walk - provided you're not walking along the edge, using a bit of common sense then you're going to be safe from any danger. My travel ethos is never to return to the same place as there's so much to see in the world. I will make an exception to return here.

I picked the hotel for our 4th wedding anniversary we where overwhelmed by the location and by the service that we had received.

From reception to cleaners, from bar tenders to the restaurant team everyone is so polite you knew you where on holiday.

Bar tenders are extremely friendly they remember your drinks from the first time they meet you.

Valesco the matre'd is excellent even brought us champagne to our table last night for our anniversary.

Only negative on the food is that they don't serve real sausages for breakfast but the rest of the food is excellent.

For first choice travel we was highly disappointed that the rep was so disinterested on your holiday and didn't want to sell us any excursions. Your best bet is to look online and book.

My partner and i just returned from riu tropicana after 11 nts stay and disagree with the bad reviews, all hotel staff were very friendly & professional, rooms were very clean, complex is spread out but a mini-bus goes round constantly until night time, there was a good choice of food but typical buffet and restauant hectic. pool area small but kept clean but a shame pool bar closes at 6pm. Well kept beach but you have to pay for sunbeds (4 euros each). Resort of calas de mallorca is a 10 min walk over a rocky walkway then up a hill or there was a train outside reception which would take you in for 9euros return, little town with plenty of gift shops & a few cafes and bars. Overall this is a good value for money 3* resort and would return

Room Tip: lower number rooms closest to all amenities

Stayed in the Tropicana in August and whilst full of good intentions I never get around to writing reviews. I have read the last two reviews and am disappointed the last two couples had a negative experience but ours was totally different.
My wife my 5 year old and me stayed for 10 days in August and had a fantastic holiday.
The staff were amazing and friendly, from the lady who swept the road every morning to the general manager!
The animation team worked tirelessly through the day and night and my daughter loved them all.
The food was fresh, varied and tasty and the bar staff were efficient and very helpful.
The site is very large and our room was about 10 mins walk from the reception and even my 5 year old loved the stroll and didn't want to use the mini bus.
Yes the rooms are basic and no air conditioning, but I understand that they are doing a refurb through the winter, they were always clean.
The pool does need attention and updating but to be honest we stayed on the beach every day and in August the beach was cleaned every day at about 7 in the morning, it was a busy beach but never felt claustriphobicly crowded.
Hoping to go back next August .
