When I was planning to meet some friends in Majorca for a long weekend while travelling on business to Spain, I did quite some research on hotels in Cala d'Or since I had never been to this southern part of the island. Fowlers Hotel seemed perfect due to the quiet location, the good reviews on Tripadvisor and the fact that there are not that many hotels around for individual travelers on a short stay basis (most hotels and apartments here rent out on a weekly basis).
Booking the room was a delight - I chose to call from Singapore, and had the nicest chat with Pat, who runs Fowlers Hotel together with her husband Colin. She recommended the perfect room for my short 3-night-stay and was very helpful with information concerning the cost of transfer from PMI airport to Cala d'Or. I chose to rent a car based on my conversation with Pat, and this was the perfect choice for the somewhat remote little town of Cala d'Or. I had little trouble finding Fowlers upon arrival, and after ringing up Colin on his mobile, he arrived to greet me within 2 minutes from my call.
I was very impressed from the first minute with the personal service extended to guests at Fowlers. Maybe it is because Colin and Pat have been living on Majorca for decades, but I felt that they treated guests really as personal guests and not just tourists. I was not "checked in" into my room - I was invited to have a drink and conversation at the bar. Colin had the nicest chat with me, and I thoroughly enjoyed this warm welcome after a tiring 20 hours in the air and on the road coming straight from Singapore. My first impression was that the hotel is very individualistic in style - and thus very authentic and definitively appealing to travelers seeking an accomodation with a personal touch.
Fowlers is world's apart from "standardized modern hotel chain decor" as well as "globalized monotonous boutique hotel chic". Every piece of furniture and decoration is picked by the owners, and obviously exudes their own taste - an interesting mix of local 'mallorquin' and old world 'British style'. It completely fits the place and owners - and makes you feel like you are staying at a private home rather than at a cookie cutter tourist dwelling (which Cala d'Or offers plenty of...).
This does not mean that you do not have anything you need for a nice holiday stay in your room. My room was not huge by standard hotel room sizes, but then again I did not need a large room, but wanted a room with a view. Pat recommend the room No.1 to me exactly because it offers the most spectacular view from the room's private terrace with a grand panorama of the Cala d'Or bay and marina. The room was very clean and comfortable - including en suite bath room with shower and even an A/C unit and fan. It did not offer the typical hotel standards like a flat screen TV or minibar. But cold drinks were provided by Colin in the bar for self service during the afternoon (the bar is open in the evening from 7 PM to midnight), and if you do choose to stay inside your hotel room during a Majorca vacation in order to watch the telly - well, you just cannot be helped anyway, right? Did I mention the fantastic view and private terrace, yet?
After getting a good night sleep, I met Pat finally the next morning - and she introduced me during breakfast to all the other guests. The breakfast service itself was the next surprise: I have stayed in many 5 and even so called 6 star hotels, and there is something about having that swanky full breakfast buffet with all the bells and whistles included. But when you are on a personal holiday, it is a completely different thing to be treated like you are part of the family, and thus serving you the best the island can offer for a good start into your holiday morning. And this is what you do get at Fowlers Hotel: not only was I offered the most delicious fruits, hams, cheeses, pastries and cereals, juices and luxurious coffee/tea - but also the nicest little chat with Pat telling me all about Cala d'Or, and even introducing her family to me.
Sitting on a sun drenched terrace overlooking the marina, having the most delicious almond tarte imaginable for dessert, and receiving very personal, friendly and totally dedicated service, I truly felt treated more like a relative than like a simple guest at Fowlers. The rest of my stay was no different: from the dedicated room service by Maria (yes, you meet the service staff too!) to the hospitality extended by Pat and Collin to me and my friends, when they came over one morning for breakfast - I simply felt that every minute at Fowlers Hotel was a complete delight.
Cala d'Or itself offered beautiful weather, nice and affordable restaurants as well as great beaches (especially for families) - but the Majorcan hospitality paired with that personal attention from the truly exceptional host couple Pat and Collin made staying at Fowlers more than memorable - it was an absolute delight. I am looking very much forward to returning to Fowlers soon, and my thanks go to Pat and Collin for all their attention to detail, warm welcome and excellent service.
