“Still a good holiday hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 12, 2010

Still an excellent hotel in many ways, the staff are still extremely helpfull, restauraunt has slipped though, if you like pork you will like here, its on the menu every night. Standards have slipped here as the food was a strong point. The nightly entertainment in the shape of the resident band was dire. They were sacked and a replacement Chris and Ray (Obsession) were put into place...much better. Have been to the hotel about 6 times now and may return as the weak points do not lessen the holiday overall. Do attend, the trip to Come Fly with Me...its great long coach trip though to Palma Nova area.

Second visit in two years, time to move on
Hotel and Staff most welcoming but resort Cala Egos is limited . Cala D'or is much livelier and has one or two interesting ( for ladies ) shops. Make sure that you visit the Come Fly With Me show in Parma not to be missed. Can't quite put my finger on it but after ten days I was getting a trifle bored. Entertainment at the Hotel excellent with Thomsons Ben a star turn.Visit the Cala D'or Yacht Club in the Marina for an excellent well priced lunch.

Just come back from a week at the Rocamarina in cala dor majorca, stayed there 2 years ago and enjoyed it so much we went back again in september. We think its an excellent place to stay and sooo quiet it was unbeliveable. It is a Thompson Gold and this speaks for itself, the food was deliciousand the entertainment by the thompson team was very professional. The place itself is lovely and clean and the rooms very spacious. All staff were polite and friendly and spoke very good english. Would recommend this hotel if you want a quite and restful holiday with no children. We think the Thompson Gold holidays are perfect and will be booking these again.

There are many reviews of this hotel that seem to focus on the same niggling points, so I will try to skirt round some of them. This was our first holiday without any of our children since 1980, which was main reason we booked an adults only hotel.

If you wish to go to a hotel were there are unlimited sunbeds that you can access at any time of the day, don't pick this hotel. The previous reviews all outline the problems. However, if you wish to pay your €10.50 a day to book sunbeds at the very quiet and restful Tennis Club in front to the hotel, which is what we did for our "pool days", there is never a problem. It does tot up though if you were to do it for a week, The Tennis Club bar is also a very nice place for lunch.

The average age of the guests we estimated at 65-68 and the hotel serves up food to suit it's clientele. I would describe the main courses as "English cooking from 30 years ago" and we found them either too bland or too overcooked and the veg was boiled to death. But again, it seemed to suit the vast majortity of the guests. We just made up our evening meals with the salad starters etc with a few cooked bits thrown in. No problems. Breakfasts were excellent with plentiful fruit and nice hots.

Niggles. Being a 4* hotel, I never expected the dining room to have tables literally inches away from each other. This is not a relaxed fine dining experience. A couple of hundred (mainly elderly) folk getting up and down for three course buffet meals made me feel like I was in a cross between a senior citizens' McDonalds and a Motorway Service Station. We had a table near the serving areas which probably made this seem even worse. I also think that you should get coffee with dinner at a hotel of this price.

We like Cala Egos. We have visited several times over the last 20 years and it still has a nice atmosphere. The marina area is lovely at night for an after-dinner stroll and drinks if you prefer to miss the entertainment in the hotel.

Last tip. Do not accept a car rental booking for Goldcar at the airport. They have excessive fuel and additional charges plus it takes ages to get your keys, even if you are pre-booked. Avoid at all costs.

Just returned from a 14 day stay at the Thomson Gold Rocamarina Hotel. It was a good holiday and enjoyable throughout. We opted to to reinvest the web savings into a 'double superior' room, the main feature of the upgrade was the extra-large bed, dressing gowns, reclining balcony chairs, kettle and tea making facilities, and free safety box - but best of all it overlooked the entertainment area which was ideal for the evening cabaret (good view, ideal sound and our own cheap drinks - until the weather changed on day 5 and it all moved inside).

The hotel staff are friendly and very helpful as are the Thomson reps, the entertainment team work extremely hard but the daytime games are basic and were not for us. James and his team helped us when we had problems to sort out and was very quick and effective. The food is of good quality but is limited in choice and often cool or cold (it is not too hard to keep food warm and that disappointed). A different curry is prepared each night but is very mild; bread and butter pudding and apple crumble is the the constant nightly fare with custard (this goes down well and is very popular with the older Brit only guests). Service is fine, the same table is retained throughout and it is nice to be able to walk in at anytime knowing that no waiting for a seat or a table to be reset is required. If your waitress is Kamilla the service is exceptional and she can entertain and amuse you too.

Internet access is by coin slot, 1 euros for 15 mins, the TV channels are very poor in choice and reception quality - best forgotten about during the stay. We dont use the pool or the sunbeds, the water was reported to be quite cold but there appeared to be enough beds around for those who wanted them. The hotel is in quiet Cala Egos and Cala D'or is a 30 min brisk walk away. You can walk to Portopero in 20 mins too it is a nice quiet village, Cala D'or is busy and spread over a large area, to get to the further beaches it is quite a walk. noddy-train is available, buses (some open-topped) and the glass bottom boat can help you get around if the inspiration for walking wanes.

Nightly entertainment is a variation of the usual reps fare, the resident duo and star cabaret - the stars are varied and professional ranging from comics, opera, popular, specialist (the Rod Stewart Tribute was very impressive)

The best trip by far is the 'Come Fly With Me' show near Magaluf, Sinatra meets Circus is probably the best way to describe it - a long night but an absolutely staggering show. The Starfish boat trip is good value as is the Thomson trip to the North (Pollenca) - two walks each week are provided by the local interest guide Chris - exercise and entertainment!

So, what are the reservations - the food range and temperature could improve, the room TV options are the worst I have experienced in a modern hotel, the area is not ideal for those less mobile if they want to leave the hotel, several people had money stolen in Cala D'or, I believe I had mine removed in the hotel,

Overall tho - a good holiday

The hotel was spotless and the staff really friendly and helpful. The food was good although personally I would like to see more variety of vegetables and potatoes. But Heh if that is all I found to critisize it must be good. The location was good. To all the people who's crits I read before I went " Were you at the same hotel as me?". We had a ball and would certainly go back. Moira & Geoff

I wrote a Thomsons review in August on our return but not surprisingly it was never published.
It was dreadful, noisy, repetitive food (not cooked as well as I do myself) guests selfish and inconsiderate racing for a sunbed for the whole day.
The tennis club was more peaceful and the pool unused, and no-one pestering you to play silly little games.
The garden area was quite nice but you could hear the noise from the hotel over the road.
Cala egos was small-nothing exciting - we just had lunch over there.
Cala d'or was a long walk past the marina and quite expensive.
The marina was pretty especially at night.
We had a superior room just above the bar and the noise every night from guests went on until 2.30 in the morning
The only good thing about this holiday was the weather and the show we saw in Palma
"Come fly with me" which was excellent. Seats further back would have been better as we cricked our necks turning behind us to see the ceiling artists.
We only had to stay for a week thankfully.
Am I fussy? probably- but we looked forward to this holiday and the THOMSON reviews were excellent.
I will read trip advisor reviews in future - they are independent and unbiased.
