“Come and stay at this hotel!”
Reviewed June 1, 2009

We booked this hotel from the Thomson Gold brochure, then looked on Trip Adviser and were somewhat worried by the occasional less than complimentary review on here. I'm the original faddy eater! Having now been, all worries are dispelled. The hotel is cleanliness itself with all areas spotless and cleaned daily. The service from the staff is excellent - they can't do enough for you and they genuinely want you to enjoy your stay. The food is varied and good. Yes, there's a curry and bread & butter pudding with custard every night, but there are also at least three other choices for main course - roast beef, turkey, chops, fish of all kinds, pork loin, etc, etc, and varied night to night. You can start with soup and a roll. After the soup you can choose from a huge range of hors d'oeuvres - rice/pasta salads, ham, cheese, potato salad, etc. And there is a massive choice of puddings - mousses, cheescakes, trifles, ice cream, fruit (in addition to the bread & butter pudding), and cheese & biscuits if you want it. Dinner and breakfast are both buffet style and you can have as much as you want , and in any combination you like. There's a similar wide choice of continental or English items for breakfast plus fruit and bread, and, again, you can have what you like and as much as you like. We'll be back like a shot. Loved it, loved it. As it's a Thomson Gold there are no children, and you can have a proper swim in the lovingly maintained 25 metre outdoor pool. No problems at all with towels on sunbeds - never once had a problem using the pool.

Although the location of the hotel is a bit isolated our week there was good. The hotel is nice and clean but we did have issues with the food - rarely was the food hot, usually luke warm and very bland. There were only a couple of dishes in the whole week that I would consider appetising. The staff were good, bar staff were excellent and very hard working, particularly David. Entertainment was generally average with the exception of a couple of really good nights. The activities that the entertainment staff put on usually ended up with a couple of people being shown up for everyone else's amusement. Not hugely professional people - often got things wrong but thought they were great. The Thompson rep at the hotel (Ben) was a lovely young man - very helpful and courteous, spoke to everyone he could and went out of his way to be helpful (see picture). If you have booked to stay at this hotel, look out for Ben if you need any help or advice.

We had a very enjoyable weeks holiday. The hotel is spotlessly clean apart from the swimming pool which could have benefited from a daily clean. We didn't have any trouble getting sunbeds but it was a little cramped. The food was lovely and plentiful although I do agree that it would have been nice to have some water available without having to buy it. The staff were very helpful and friendly especially the bar waiters who were very attentive. The surrounding area is very quiet with a few bars, restaurants and shops but there is more on offer in Cala D'or if you want it. The inhouse entertainment leaves a lot to be desired but the outside acts brought in were very good. On the down side the drinks were very expensive but I think that is the case everywhere due to the weak pound. We wanted a relaxing holiday in the sun and thats what we got. I would definately go again.

Booked this via Thomson. Had a request for it to be wheelchair friendly because my wife had a problem with her knee at the time. Its totally not wheelchair friendly. Steps up to reception, steps down to the pool. Yes the Thomson rep helped with the wheelchair but he grabbed it by the wheel and tipped my wife back on to the concrete. Reception staff seemed indifferent. Needless to say we've not considered going back there.

September 2008

Just returned from a seven day stay at this hotel.

Positives

Weather was excellent

The room was good for this standard of hotel (3*) and housekeeping was excellent. The staff were all excellent, helpful, efficient and friendly.

The food is good for this standard of hotel with a wide buffet selection. The currys are excellent including a vegetable one. Two available each night.

Large TV in lounge for sports fans.

Neutrals

Range of bars, restaurants and shops on new build complex nearby.

Negatives

Cala D'Or ( 30 minute walk away through new build residential streets) is disappointing. A maze of new build bars and restaurants. We paid one brief visit that was enough. The highlight was a rat running along a wall.

The Marina is a 15 minute (tomtom walk distance) walk away and then not really worth the walk. No sea view just a boat park in a narrow estuary/canal.

The hotel pool area is small and cramped. not a place to spend a day. It is dominated by a stage for the entertainment at one end which blocks the sun from the pool area. The "garden" area is untidy and essentially a flagged rectangle separated from the road by a hedge amongst trees, again not a place to spend the day.
At one side of the pool there is no walk way. The guests take there chances along the lip of the pool ( deep-end) to reach their sunbeds which touch the lip of the pool, not safe for anyone who can't swim. The beds are arranged in fixed pattern is places inches apart.
I saw mention in reviews of a race for sunbeds. I can't imagine being desperate enough to wish to stay there for even one day.

The other pool where you pay 13 Euros for two sunbeds and shade is very small, shaded by large trees and overloking the car park. Not for me thanks.

The local "beach" is very small, very crowded and noisy.

Most guests we met were making trips out each day to escape.

The "entertainment" is very loud and can be heard several streets away.

We would not stay here again, nor would I visit Cala D'Or again.

Luckily we had a hire car and were able to escape every day. There are some excellent beaches within a 30 minute drive.

  • Liked — The staff
  • Disliked — The pool area, beach access.

I have just returned from this hotel, how it can be a gold i have no idea....more like golden oldies....the social would have a ball here, all old people queing for sunbeds with walking sticks then as soon as the pool is opened they are running down the steps...sad or what!!!
The food was the same EVERY night...meat and veg with the same puddings, bread and butter pudding, apple crumble. Not good when you are there for two weeks! All the food was luke warm which resulted in all the people in my party being ill.
The maid cleaned our room daily and every day left our patio door unlocked which backed onto the street so anyone could have jumped across and got into our room.
The entertainment was OK, reps doing stupid quizzes every night n find themselves extremely funny.
Steps everywhere which wasnt mentioned in and brochure so hence my grandmother struggled getting around.
Needless to say I will not be returning.

Just back. Good food, good location, spotlessly clean. So, why a score of only 2? Simple. We couldn't get sun-beds, not unless you get up same time as you do at home to go to work (not on holiday please!) to then queue until the pool/garden areas are open to put your towels onto couple sun beds. Local management have abdicated responsibility to guests to self police, by putting a sign up that says you can move other guest towels from the beds if they are vacant for more than 30mins. Does not work, at all! Surprised Thomson have not dealt with this as it is exclusive to them. The irony is that there is enough room for more beds in the gardens. But for some unknown reason, there's an almighty big children's climbing frame therein, despite the fact the hotel is couples only where the average age of guests are 60!
Pity...with the sun beds sorted, definitely a score of 4, with younger average age and less "hi de hi" games and antics, possibly a 5!
