“Friendly staff, great beach and pool holiday”
Reviewed August 1, 2011

Just got back from 10 days in the Ponent Playa at Cala d'or. This is a great hotel for a family beach and pool holiday. Friendly staff; all day entertainment; good food; great location on the beach. We had a junior suite which was huge and very nice - had a tv and a fridge which s handy. Has a massive balcony overlooking the sea which was just lovely. I would defo go for a suite if possible as some of the rooms looked tiny. A standard room for 3 people is very small - ok for holiday but no space to move about in. Also, make sure you get a sea view or pool view - some of the rooms at the back look over the car park or even the next door hotel which give s a rubbish view.

Staff are friendly and the restaurant food was good, breakfast was really nice and diner ok. Some strange combinatiosn but ok really. i'd suggest that you wait until 3.30 and eat in the pool or beach bar = these offer tasty snacks, free on all inc, or cheap enough if you have to pay. Drinks are expensive in the resort so be careful. Beer was around £3.50 just go for large beers - small beers are tiny and cost £2.50 -- just have fun and drink big beers ;-) soft drinks are really expensive so be careful !

The resort is very nice with etertainment on every evening in pretty much every bar - some dodgy singers but all good fun. Many have free wifi so kids can do the facebook stuff if they need.

Entertainmentt staff at the hotel are superb and even the liefguard gets in on the action. Good for kids and adults. Had one cloudy day and tthe entertainment staff didnt stop with silly games and pool fun - they were very good. Night time entertainment is a bit rubbish but ok for hotel holiday time. just go for big beers to make it better.

Cala D'or is a bit far from everytwhere - you need to hir a car or go on trips to visit anywhere. These were around £30/person for the waterpark or marine land so not cheap. Car hire is ok and driving not too tricky once you get the hang of getting out of the town. [tip... drive out of the car park; go stright across the first juction; turn left at the polynesian restaurant - go straight across next couple of rounabouts until you see signs for palma.... this is not signposted and you ca ngo round and round a bit]. The car hire recommended by the hotel was good [Emporer / empress..??] €120 for three days all in. Had a lovely citroen c4 - brand new abd very easy to drive.

The pool area is cleaned every day and you can reserve sunbeds by the pool from around 8.15 - you queue up and then ruch in the pool area to grab your bed. Best to do this as there are few shades and these do get taken.

Beach Sunbed hire is around €15/day and you need to get their early or reserve the day before. They do get full up.

Dont bank on late check-out or having a room to change in - the hotel was full and this was tricky. There is a room for changing but even this gets booked up.

Had a great time - lovely hotel, great staff. Best for family beach holiday or a week by the pool.

Room Tip: Make sure you get a sea view - best rooms are probably overlooking the terrae and beach.

Just returned from this hotel spent 10 nights there and it was amazing. The reception staff very friendly and helpful. The bar staff all friendly right down to the hotel maids. The entertainment staff were really nice especially Santos and Claudio had such laugh with them oh and not forgetting Fernando the lifeguard. The rooms were more than adequate and very clean, towels changed daily. The food was lovely no complaints from us the food at the pool bar great from grilled chicken sandwiches to pizza hamburgers etc.. The restaurant food was very nice plenty of choice. The pool is not a large pool but could always find a bed up to about 10am. Always something going on around the pool. The area outside the hotel is really nice plenty nice shops restaurants and play areas for the younger children

We stayed at the Ponent Playa on an all inclusive holiday in October 2010 - the last 2 weeks of the season.

The hotel was fantastic. we received a very warm welcome from reception on arrival, and our room was upgraded to a sea view - which afforded fantastic views. The hotel is actually set on a cove, and has direct access to the beach. There is also a boat-bus which comes a few times a day and (for a small fee) can take you around much of Majorca.

The room on arrival was spotless - including the bathroom - and the cleaning staff came round every day to clean the floors and make the beds. In fact, we were so pleased with the service that we tipped our cleaner 10 Euros - although she was worth far more!

The staff at the hotel were all very friendly and helpful, and if we needed any assistance, nothing was too much trouble. I can particularly recommend Eva and Andres in this capacity.

The food at the hotel was excellent, and we never once ventured outside the hotel for any food. The main restaurant was self sevice for all sittings, and the food catered for a number of tastes, from local recipes to pizza, burgers and chips. There was always fresh salad , soup and fish. At breakfast and dinner there was a chef to cook eggs and steaks (respectively) to order, and there was always plenty of choice in the hot food range and the food was regularly replenished. Paella was served at lunch and dinner, and was always very good. Being self service you could go back as many times as you liked. The dessert table was always well-stocked, and small cakes, ice recream and fresh fruit were daily staples. Drinks at lunch and dinner were brought by the waiting staff, who were always polite and approcahable. As we were there at the end of the season, there was rarely a queue, and you could go to dinner any time you liked. However, I would imagine that the restaurant is likely to get quite busy in high season.

I can also recommend the pool-side restaurant, which served quick staples such as burgers and sanwhiches, and was a great place to relax.

The entertainment at the hotel was really good. There is a kid's club, which runs lots of activities, and there are adult activities from Spanish lessons to table tennis organised every day. In the evening, we experienced a mix of music and quiz events in the main bar - which we thoroughly enjoyed!

The hotel also had outdoor activities to enjoy, including mini gold, table tennis and tennis, which were free for all inclusive vistors, and which we took full advantage of.

The all inclusive deal I would recommend to everyone. We ate all our meals in the hotel, and most drinks were free. The fact that everything was paid at time of booking really took the pressure off the holiday (the year before we went self-catering, and spent more than on this all inclusive holiday just on cheap food, and rationing alcohol!!) and as a result we were able to enjoy this holiday far more! In fact, I would say that we saved a fortune!

To conclude, we had a great time at this hotel, and will definitely be returning in the future.

I stayed at this hotel for two weeks in June. It's a nice hotel, clean, friendly atmosphere. Some good entertainment, and the entertainers are extremely funny. There is a kids disco every night and kids clubs throughout the day, followed by entertainment for everyone else. They also give certificates for the winners of the days games, these included darts, water polo, bowls, ping pong and many more.

The food was good, not amazing but there was a good selection every night so always something to eat. (Even if it was a burger and chips) We were half board, and drinks where fairly expensive. But we noticed on the menu that a lot of the drinks had to be paid for even if you where an all inclusive guest. (Mainly if you wanted the brand and not the local version) But I always saw all inclusive as the easy option as you don't need to mess about with bills and money, but obviously here if you want the good stuff you have to pay a little extra.

The pool was nice, although if you wanted a parasol people would queue at 7am to secure one. The beach is also fairly small but very nice. To hire a sunbed and parasol for the day it would cost around 7 euro, but we bought lilo's from the shops instead of paying for one every day.

I also ended up with a sea facing room on the sixth floor, totally through chance. And the view was amazing.

The only thing I had a major complaint with was the security of my room. An extremely sentimental piece of jewellery was stolen from my room while I was not there, and the hotel states that if you do not use a safety deposit box they cannot be held responsible. My bracelet was hidden in clothes in my wardrobe, and didn't even look like it would be worth a lot, which is why I was surprised anyone would take it. The manager was helpful and showed me who had been in my room, and the only people where housekeeping. Which makes it quite obvious to me who had stolen it. This did ruin a couple of days of the holiday for me. Just make sure if you stay here, that EVERYTHING is in a safety deposit box (at extra cost). Quite sad to have to do that on holiday.

Room Tip: Sea facing, high up.

I stayed here for 4 nights in the first week of the Easter holidays. The hotel was fine - clean, very nice views onto a really quite quiet beach, nice bar etc. But definitely no better than fine. What you can't see from the photos on the website is that the swimming pool is right on the main road, and the hotel is between it and the sea. It just wasn't very nice. Food wasn't great either.

The room i had was clean and the bed was comfortable. It also had an amazing sea view. There were blackout curtains on the windows, which was good for keeping it cool during the day. This is important as there was no air-con in the room. Not a problem in April, but I wouldn't want to be there in August. There was quite a lot of noise in the room from the kitchen extractor fan down below. However, this stopped about 10 each night and never stopped me getting to sleep. Worth bearing in mind though if you have small kids who go to bed early.

Room Tip: ask for a room with a sea view in the main hotel (not the annex) and as high up as possible.

Stayed at the Barcelo Ponent Playa in July 2011.

Firstly, transfer from airport to hotel was smooth and efficient (we went with Thomas Cook on an All Inclusive board).

Hotel itself- absolutely lovely. Very big, but staff very friendly and helpful at all times.

Room:Our room was up on the 5th floor down a long corridor, walls are quite thin so we were thankful to be at a quieter end of the hotel! Our view was partial sea and partial pool, directly overlooking the evening entertainment area. Room was fairly basic but had all the commodities we needed (except a mini-fridge, but this turned out not to be a problem as drinks were so readily available!). Rooms were cleaned daily by friendly cleaning staff and we had no problems.

Food: All inc option was excellent, massive range of drinks we could have at any time. If we asked for wine with our meal we were given a brand new bottle every night. Food was generally lovely, chefs grilled fresh meat and fish (all sorts- salmon, tuna, swordfish, dogfish, hake...!) and there was always a good range of veg, carbs, soups and puddings available. As part of the all inc. option we could have drinks from the beach and pool bar as well as snacks at certain times during the day. We could also drink at the Music bar at night (and when it rained, the day!) all of which included cocktail of the day, sangria (most important!), beer, wine, spirits, soft drinks and liquers.

Entertainment: all staff were very cheerful and smiley, and multilingual. They were able to entertain every night with varying levels of success, always a laugh though! They also put on some daytime entertainment on the day it rained torrentially all afternoon, which was nice of them :). We played mini-golf free of charge, and there were tennis and other leisure activities, which were a small extra charge.

Excursions: The hotel offered competitive prices for a range of excursions, which we ended up partaking in as they were cheaper than Thomas Cook! Bear in mind with excursions that you get picked up from the hotel, which is great, but also means that everyone else gets picked up from their hotel too, so you may well end up doing the rounds of Cala D'Or a few times! All excursions were easily booked with minimal fuss and excellent efficiency. The Starfish boat trip is to be recommended, as it allows you a different view of the coast, and a cheeky swim in the beautiful sea :D

Pool/Beach: We only sat by the pool for one afternoon during our stay, partly because the beach was so beautiful, but also as the pool's atmosphere was not as nice. The lifeguard stood and chatted to the barstaff all the time we were there. The pool bar itself was a bit grubby (no problems anywhere else in the hotel!) and felt a bit negected really. The beach is about 20 steps from the hotel- ACE! Absolutely beautiful cove. Can get q little busy, especially as we were there in high season. Umbrellas and beds can be hired for reasonable charge. Once you get a little base and settle down you forget the business. Sea was beautiful and pretty clean. Beach bar is within easy reach so a sangria on the beach is a must!

Overall, the hotel served its purpose very well for a relaxing holiday. The resort is fairly quiet at night, and it can be difficult to get out and about if you haven't got a car and don't use the boats or coach excursions to explore. I feel that we had excellent value for money, especially on the food/drink side of things, and had a very relaxing holiday. Thumbs up!

Room Tip: Ask at reception- very helpful staff.
