Prinsotel Alba Hotel Apartments
Ranked #14 of 46 Hotels in Cala d'Or
Reviewed September 20, 2013

We have come to Prinsotel Alba for 5 years now and can really see the upgrades and improvements that have been made. We are a family of 3 one of which is disabled, plus we also have extra family join us during our holiday. During high season the hotel like any other can be very busy which is why we tend to come towards the end of August and beginning of September when things start to quieten down. We have always found the staff to be friendly and welcoming from the management to the maintenance men.
The apartments are clean and a great size and easily accomodate 4 adults. They have seperate bedroom, bathroom and sitting room with kitchinette plus private balcony. The bedroom has two single beds which are side by side so by just changing the bedding around can easily be made up as a double, there is also a dressing table, bedside tables and a built in wardrobe containing the safety deposit box. The bathroom is much like any other with shower over the bath, though last year the addition of a hairdryer was nice suprise, a bit less weight to be carried in the hand luggage bringing mine. The sitting room has two sofas which can be pushed together to make a cot style double or kept as 2 single beds, dining table and chairs, coffee table, sideboard and flat screen tv. The kitchinette has kettle, toaster, 3 ring hob, fridge with icebox and all the cutlery, crockery and cooking equiptment you could need when going self catering, though no microwave in the standard rooms.
This year we were given a very privilaged chance to see the new luxury rooms coming to Alba for next year and what a fantastic re-furbishment they are. Not the expected yellows, oranges and blues but crisp whites, charcol greys, black and chromes. The bedroom is to die for with a huge double bed, massive padded headboard and chrome light fittings as well as flatscreen tv. The sitting room and kitchinette are amazing too. The kitchinette is smaller than in the standard rooms but there is now a microwave in them. But the sitting room just looks out of this world with the new furnishings and colour scheme and again another flat screen tv in there. The pictures of this room on the prinsotel website do not do the room justice, it is like being in a totally different hotel, well done Alba , we are looking forward to trying these new rooms when we come next year.
The food at the hotel has always been of a good quality with plenty of choice for everyone. The restaurant is very clean and the staff work very hard to ensure you have whatever you need or want. I can honestly say we have never been disappointed with our meals when we've eaten in the hotel restaurant.
Everyone who works at Prinsotel is very hard working and try as hard as they can to ensure the place is kept as clean and tidy as possible. All front of house staff try their best to speak english and german as well as a few other languages. The maintenance staff have very limited language skills , but will try their best to sort any problems out for you if they are unable they will guide you to someone who can help.
The hotel is less than 5 minutes walk from the best beach in Cala D'or which is Cala Gran. This beach is beautiful though can be very busy, but there are numerous beaches in Cala D'or so you can always find space on one of them.
The hotel has lots of sporty things for everyone from the gym to football and basketball pitch to water polo and volley ball which is always a favourite for the guests.
Having been to a few hotels in Mallorca we all really enjoy coming to Alba especially our disabled son. He is a wheelchair user though can walk a little. The hotel have been great with him and us trying very hard to make sure our stays have always been great. Most of the hotel is reasonably well suited for wheelchair use though there are one or two areas which a non walker will find very difficult. The ramp outside reception is quite steep and for a self propel chair would be very hard to get up without assistance as is the ramp in the restaurant also every ground floor room is accessed via 2 steps, this being said the hotel would do what they could to help you. We always hire a mobility scooter when we are at Alba which easily get up the ramp at reception as well as help getting around the local area.
Cala D'or is a lovely area if quite touristy, though there are some hidden gems around if you look. The restaurants and bars are many so plenty of choice. The marina is well worth a visit just make sure you take a couple of slices for bread to feed the countless fish around the boats.
The hotel in our view is in the best location as you're out of the main town, only by a few minutes, but it's enough to ensure you're not disturbed by all the late opening bars.

Room Tip: We have always had a ground floor room facing the pool which we have always enjoyed. This may not be...

I stayed for a week in a self catering room away from the pool and reception areas. The room equipped with standard SC stuff - hob, toaster, crockery, cutlery, saucepan etc, although was missing a kettle. We told reception but it took 24 hours to get one to us. Living room / kitchen area was big, and bedroom more than spacious for the two of us staying in there. There were two wardrobes so we could hang stuff up separately. Bathroom was fine. We thought the 20E deposit for a telly remote was a little steep (being that we weren't intending on spending much time in the room watching telly!), so didn't bother with that.
It could be quite noisy at night. I think the walls must be quite thin - you can hear when your neighbour flushes the loo, moves a chair, closes a door... I could even hear someone next door snoring. And cleaning starts quite early so can wake you up. However, there's no noise from the town and it's not the kind of place where you're going to have drunkards rambling around at 3am shouting.
We went to the pool on our first afternoon - it was busy and the game of volleyball meant it wasn't really possible to swim in the pool. However, we were practically on the beach, so we went there every day instead (I think it was actually quicker to get there than it was to walk to the pool area!). The beach is lovely and pretty clean. The sun-loungers are 13E a day for two people with an umbrella or 11E a day for two people without it.
It's under five minutes to walk to the main town area, which is crammed full of restaurants and bars. Don't expect it to be cheap though - the prices are the same as in the UK. There're some really excellent places to eat so even if you're AI or HB I'd recommend going out at least one night for a meal.
All in all, I'd definitely go back to Cala D'Or and would be happy to stay at the Prinsotel Alba again - for what we paid it was good value, and being so close to the beach and town was fantastic.

Arrived at 11PM to be told that the hotel was overbooked which wasn't ideal with a tired 1 year old...got taxi to Cala d'or Sol, very noisy hotel,so had terrible first night..the following morning we went back to Alba at 11 am...room wasn't ready until 2pm..didn't mind as we went to town for lunch and room was ready when we got back, we were booked as self catering so got bumped up to B&B..food was very good, with plenty of choice..had no problem getting sun bed and found that the pool was big enough to enjoy even when it was busy...rooms are basic but well kept..animation team are very lively and great with the kids..Alba is very close to a couple of beautiful beaches..also very close to the town centre which has loads of quality restaurants and some small bars..we went at the end of aug/start of sept and the weather was still very warm 28-30c...i would stay in this hotel again but would want a guarantee that it is not over booked.

Room Tip: for quieter nights request a room away from the pool area

Stayed here at the end of August for a week. Arrived at the hotel to be told no rooms available. We then got shipped off to the Cala d’or Sol for the night, so not a great start. We were offered a boat trip or a car for the day as compensation (as we were All Inclusive), but I declined both. Came back the next day we were then offered a trip to the Aquarium which I thought would be good for the kids. The problem was the compensation was 50 euro per room (we had two apartments), so we all couldn’t go! In the end I settled for 100 euro and also got £220 off Jet2. They really need to sort out this overbooking.

The food is of a good standard and there is plenty of choice. The staff are friendly but as mentioned they do seem to work long shifts (extra praise must go to the animation team who never seem to stop). The sun lounger problem is not as bad as people make out. We always found some spare in the afternoon. There are spares on the roof terrace as well.

We didn’t really see the evening entertainment, but my 2 year old did enjoy the mini disco on a couple of nights. All in all this a good hotel for a 3 star. It is more suited for families with young children.

My advice is to book half board, as they will upgrade you to AI as compensation(as you will probably be overbooked!).

Quite a comical but annoying start to the holiday really, arrived in majorca at 8:15am. Went to the correct numbered coach at palma airport to be told by the driver we wasn't on his list, thomas cook rep came to us saying " surly they told you in the airport your in a different hotel for the night " no, but was kind of expected after reading on here.. The coach journey, was raining very heavy and with the water pouring into the coach you'd have thought we was on an open top bus! luckily we'd been given maps of majorca from the rep, how the other drivers must have laughed at a coach load with opened maps covering them.
Arrived at the substitute hotel sol appartments to be told the rooms weren't ready, 3 seperate times we were told to come back in 30 mins.
Two very tired children, 4 adults too we finally got our rooms at 4pm.
Got to prinsotel alba and checked in at 10:30 am the next day, 2 hours later my partner realised he'd left his travelling clothes in sol appt, went straight to the rep then to sol, to be told its been cleaned nothings there, spoke to the lovely receptionist in alba, said she'd do her best for us but as there was £140 in the jeans we'll not see them again as its alot of money to the cleaners, now i know leaving things in sol was our fault, but how people find it so easy to steal is beyond me.
we accepted 50 euro each in compensation from Thomas cook, the rep told us thats as good as it would get so no point in taking it further. but really it does shorten your holiday as you can't get settled until your unpacked.
Good choice of food in the restaurant, plenty of meat, salad, pasta and potatoes. would satisfy fussy eaters. The snack bar wasn't so good, cheese and ham sandwiches everyday, ice cream if your lucky.
No complaints about the room or cleaning service, was all ok.
we managed to get a sunlounger on the last day of our holiday ( 1st sept ) end of the season i think, not enough seats to watch kiddies entertainment, you either had to sit inside and watch everyone playing on the ipads or stand outside to see the entertainment unless you got seated at 6pm and waited 2 hours for it to start.
We was told to go to the restaurant for 6:40 am for breakfast before our flight home, got there at 6:35 to find it closed, went across to reception the man said it opens at 7, so went back to wait, at 7:05 we went back to reception, same man said no it closes at 7 you should have got there at 6:40 hmm, we was there.. the jobsworth lady who works in there has been shouting no go away at us!! once again tired and hungry children.
Was a nice resort though, plenty of shops, lots of nice walks. The beach next to the hotel was very busy, if you walk past that to the next one ( 5 mins )it's smaller but quieter which was better.
won't be going back to prinsotel alba. we travelled as a family 2+2 then 2. Asked for the 2 rooms to be together near the pool, got 2 room at the very back across the road from each other. I guess the most important thing was the kiddies had a fab time which they really did.

Over booking is a big issue at this hotel, we booked our holiday in March , 2 rooms for 4 adults 2 children. We were told on the transfer bus at the Airport that we wouldn't be going to alba and had to stop in another hotel for one night. Both rooms over booked. We were compensated but we had to live out of our suitcases for the first day and then spent the next morning transferring to the Alba. We met other people at the Alba who also had the same experience so be aware over booking is common. The hotel was reasonable and the food was ok. Some staff were more friendly than others. As we had an early flight home 7.20am pick up we were advised we could get some sort of breakfast from the restaurant if we got there for 6.40am,We did and the restaurant was closed. Reception then told us it was 7am, at 7.10 the restaurant staff said we should have got there before 7am, we was just given the run around , Reception and the staff couldn't have cared less. Not a big problem as we got something at the airport but misleading information by the hotel. There are limited sun beds at the Alba , people are queuing up well before the 10am unlocking and had already hung towels on the umbrellas, A shame really as we noticed many sun beds had towels on them but were not occupied until the afternoon. The hotel does have a policy of not reserving sun beds but this is not enforced. Like everything else probably too much effort for the hotel management. after reading other reviews we are so glad we hired a safe for the week as we do on every holiday, only given 3 stars due to over booking and some staff issues other than that its a great location for town , beach etc
