Wonderful small hotel made extra special by the staff: Here are five reason why I gave it five stars.

1) Clean. The rooms, public areas, loos everything were immaculate
2) Breakfast. Wonderful choice of great food but best of all no panic around 10.30 (when service should end) only a polite 'would you like anything else' at around 10.50
3) Location. Just out of the hustle and bustle of the main town but very easy to walk.
4) The grounds. Very nice, very relaxing well kept.
5) The staff. This should be number 1-5 as it's the staff that make this place so special. Everyone smiling, acknowledging you and trying hard.

Only downside - they haven't got a clue how to make a good cocktail!

Oh and there were lots of families with small children - mine are big now so I had to cast my mind back to dealing with screaming 2 year olds and bored 10 year olds.

We have just returned from our stay here. We stayed for 6 days as part of our honeymoon. From start to finish the service was excellent, really friendly staff & couldn't do enough for us. The hotel is very quiet, relaxing and a lovely place to come back to after a day out. The pool area was extremely clean, both regularly cleaned indoor and outdoor pools.

The rooms were also excellent, good air con. comfy beds, very nice balcony's and balcony furniture. The rooms were very well equipped (sun lotion, haidryer, robes, slippers, beach towels, coffee machine, dvd player & a touch screen unit for controlling all the applicances). Turn down service which was lovely.

We did not get round to eating in the restaurant, but it all looked great and nicely done out.

Only dislike was the town... we had no idea what Cala d'or was like... perfect if you want plenty of english bars, food and cheap jugs of cocktails, but not particularly relaxing. The hotel staff were great and gave us loads of ideas of places to go though so we mostly went out in the car.

Overall excellent stay and would definitely go again!

My husband and I have just returned from a 5 day stay at this small hotel which was excellent. The hotel is in a very built up area, but manages to provide a quiet and calm environment allowing you to relax and recharge the batteries which is exactly what we were looking for.

The hotel is spotlessly clean and the staff are all charming.

Most of the guests were either of retirement age or couples with very young children, so if you are looking for a lively hotel with atmosphere and entertainment in the evenings, this is not the place for you.

We had a Junior Suite (Rm 313) at the back of the hotel grounds which overlooked the road so we did hear traffic when the doors were open during the day and there was always quite loud music and general noise from a nearby hotel/appartments at night. However the rooms are double glazed so as soon as the doors out to your balcony are closed there is total peace. The suite was spacious and very comfortable. We liked the fact that the room was at the back, allowing us privacy and evening sun on the balcony.

We stayed on a B & B basis, preferring to have flexibility as to where we ate. Also the reviews on Trip Advisor before our departure had been far from great.

Breakfast in the hotel was of a good standard. A large plentiful buffet, with a cooked breafkfast if you wanted it.
.
Lunch or indeed dinner could be eaten at a small restaurant close to the pool. The menu was pretty expensive for the size of the servings and was quite limited - but what you ordered was of a high standard. As an example: one beer, two glasses of Rose, one small dish each for 2 adults and 2 cups of coffee cost approx. 60 Euros.

Dinner in the main dining room of the hotel was not something we tried. Very few people seemed to eat here, unless they were on Half Board, so the place was always deserted at night. We felt very sorry for the charming staff who were left standing with no-one to serve. Guests who had eaten here on the night of their arrival had been appalled at the high cost and said that it was good but nothing special.

Those guests staying in a Junior Suite (which have a small kitchenette with a dining table and four chairs alongside it) were probably buying something at a local supermarket to eat for their lunch - but when on holiday we want to totally relax and enjoy ordering lunch alongside the swimming pool.

If you are travelling with young children, there is a good supermarket very close to the back of the hotel - no more than a 3 minute walk - which shuts pretty late at night. You go out of the hotel's back gate (beyond the pool), turn left, walk down a few hundred metres, turn left up the first side street and it is right there on the left.

The hotel is extremely close to the centre of Cala D'Or where there are a huge number of restaurtants serving food of a pretty mediocre standard - fine if are happy with a pub style menu serving steak, pizza or chips, but nothing truly Spanish or of a high standard - they are very much catering to a certain group of people. The piazza style atmosphere is nice though and it is a good place to wander if you want to do a little shopping or have a drink or ice cream. We tried hard to find somewhere good to eat in the town centre, but failed - as did other guests at the hotel. C'an Trompe (authentic Spanish) was the best of the lot, but the service was painfully slow - so do not dine here if you have hungry children! Barlovento was not good, so I am not sure why others on Trip Advisor give it a good review. Even the Spanish people eating here were not impressed.

However, if you are happy to walk a little further (no more than 15 minutes going down hill on your way out) or 5 Euros for a taxi (fixed price) you will arrive at the Marina where there are some excellent restaurants.

Two restaurants which we could not recommend more highly are:

5 star - Michelin rated - Port Petit - overlooking the Marina. Quite fabulous, but expensive - 150 Euros minimum for 2 people with wine, but worth every Euro. We spent more when we each had 3 courses. A very special dining experience. We dined here twice and both times it was truly sensational - particularly if you love fresh fish.

5 star - Noa - on the Marina front - and fabulous. Asian fusion style, but with other more simple dishes for those who do not wish to eat Asian food. Very well priced for the standard of food and I am just sorry we only found it at the end of our stay (recommended by the Patron of Port Petit on the evening his restaurant was closed). We could happily have eaten here every night and not been bored with the menu or been at all troubled by the size of the final bill.

I will end by saying this hotel was just what we were hoping for and we would not hesitate to return there in the future. However, this is not a hotel where we would choose to stay when travelling with our 2 daughters (aged 8 and 11) for they would find it far too small and quiet!

I have never written a review on Trip Advisor before, so this is a first - but I hope it is helpful.

This is the 8th visit to this hotel and we will certainly return. It has and still does provide a high standard of room and service with the personal touch not normally experienced in a hotel which is part of a large group. We have visited and never have been disapointed with Sol Melia hotels all over Europe and continue to use them for the guarenteed high standard the provide. This hotel is located in a quite area of Cala D,Or with easy access to the shops, restaurants, bars, beaches. It is an ideal location for travel to other parts on the east coast of the island or just to relax in the garden and pool area of the hotel.
Hope you enjoy as much as we have.

This was our third visit to the Melia. The reason being that we absolutly love it, it offers us everything we need for a relaxing family holiday. We have two young children and find we can have a relatively stress free week away at this hotel.

The rooms: We have a suite which has a bedroom, bathroom with jacuzzi bath and a lounge area which also has a small kitchen area. The kitchen isn't big but has a microwave which is great for baby's bottles, there is also a fridge and two hobs. There are two televisions, in the lounge and the bedroom which have a few english channels including bbc 1 and itv. The blackout curtains in the bedroom are brilliant and we all slept really well.

The pool: The pool area is gorgeous, surrounded by flowers and manages to strike just the right balance between peaceful and relaxing but also fine for children to play. There are never lots of children here. There is a childresn pool attached to the main pool along with a paddling pool and playground in a seperate area.

The food: I can't comment on anything other than breakfast as we have always eaten out at night. The breakfast is lovely. Lots to choose from, pastries, fruits, cheeses and meat, cereals and also a chef making fresh omlettes, bacon etc to order.

The staff: The staff are always very welcoming and always say Hello. The housekeeping staff are amazing and the rooms are cleaned to a high standard. The turdown service is lovely, especially the chocolate on your pillow and a weather forecast for the following day.

The area: Cala Dor is a nice resort. Plenty of shops to look around, we haven't found the restuarants to be anything particularly special but the food is generally good. With two children we are not looking for fancy meals. I am a fussy person though and i haven't got any complaints. It is a resort which is aimed at tourists but there is a lovely harbour to walk to.

We will definitly be going back!
