“Wonderful 10 Days at Alicia”
Reviewed July 14, 2013

THE FLIGHT:
Flight from Gatwick. Used day before checkin. Last year 5 mins. No separate desk, so we queued for over an hour this time, parking in short stay for hour was £10.00. Good flight, usual tight leg room.

AIRPORT:
Had to wait for about an hour for any luggage to arrive in Palma and then a further hour on bus for passengers to arrive. About an hour on bus to the resort.

CHECK IN:
Quick and efficient.

EXTRAS:
We were well aware of extra costs from previous reviews. One note towels are now E15 deposit each to hire.

FOOD:
Everyone has different expectations and standards. My opinion was this was very good for a three star hotel with food as good as all the other four star hotels we have stayed in abroad. Breakfast and evening meal fabulous choice, all well cooked and hot. Always found us a table, sometimes had to be laid, but by the time we had visited the buffet, the table was ready. Only slight niggle some dishes were too salty for my taste. But plenty not so. Wine and water good value. Water E1.50 for 500 ml, Wine from about E7.50.

ROOMS:
Cleaned thoroughly, nicely presented, plenty big enough. Good sea view, with small balcony. Beds firm, but for us just right.

LOCATION:
Wonderful for walking into Cala Bona Harbour and Cala Millor. As per previous reviews Cala Millor nicer beach. However this is the busiest beach I have ever been on. Beginning of July. I actually read just prior to going that this is the busiest beach in Mallorca, so no surprise. We took a bus 'City Bus' from stop just to left of hotel entrance. E1.80 each way to a lovely bay, not at all busy, at 'Cala sa Marjal'. Super Snorkling here and trees for shade. We also walked here about 45 mins. Restaurant, loos and suns beds/shades available.

TRIPS:
We took bus to caves of Drac. Bus turn right past roundabout, then cross road. E1.85 each way. Dropped at entrance. Caves E14 each, well worth cost. short walk down hill to lovely beach and harbour, again not to busy.

We walked to castle passing through Cala Millor, it is signposted at bottom, but we did not walk far enough and ended up taking a different and long route. Very nice and reasonable priced restaurant at top, about E3.50 for ham and cheese baguette with salad. Castle small but view wonderful.

Cat trip. Very busy, cost E 59 euros. Bear in mind lunch and drinks means one drink Sangria or water so take own water if you don't want to buy drinks on board. BBQ delish. Two good stops for swimming.

ENTERTAINMENT:
No seats outside for Rod Stewert tribute, so we enjoyed from pool view balcony. Other acts seemed to have room. We had sea view and did not go to sleep until 12. We could hear two sets of music from our room, quite clear and loud. Our hotel finished at 11.30 sharp and hotel opposite at 12, then silence. Bear in mind to pack earplugs if you like to turn in at 10pm. We were not at all bothered, although it was novel with competing music.

STAFF. Polite and efficient.

GUESTS
Older generation very few children.

FINAL THOUGHTS.

WONDERFUL, SO FEW NIGGLES, LOTS OF POSITIVES. WOULD RECCOMEND AND GO BACK WITHOUT HESITATION.

Been to this hotel many times, have already booked for next year, love every thing about it, food brill views great, staff great, could go on and on, but try and see for yourself. My only negative is sun beds ... Well tired and old, you spend a lot of time round pool , so a bit of comfort would make ALICIA PERFECT... But enjoyed only just back, but looking forward to the next one. And thanks to Sergio for being so diligent,, and attentive , but all staff are great,

Room Tip: High floor brill views, and quiet

lovely hotel with fantastic staff. very clean with room service daily. the restaurant was great and the head waiter was very attentive, It was the best food in a hotel restaurant that i have ever had. the pool area had lots of sunbeds and a peaceful garden area. the hotel only seemed tohave one person in the entertainments team - a great guy called Chris but because he was the only one he had to work morning noon and night doing all of the activities - seemed a bit unfair on him when other hotels had teams of several people.

Room Tip: sea view rooms are lovely

My friend and I are just back from a week at the Alicia. Everything exactly as described in the Thompson brochure. The plus points here - staff great and very friendly. Restaurant Manager always there to greet you and the waiting staff - Pepe in particular - always happy and helpful. Breakfast very good with a selection of hot and cold food, something for everyone. Lovely pool. Hotel spotlessly clean. Position perfect - right on the seafront (we had a Select room on first floor with a stunning sea view and very comfortable sunbeds) - and lovely walks to both harbour and Cala Millor.
However it should be noted that the average age of guests staying at Alicia is nearly 70. Many return year after year and the hotel does seem to cater for this group. This is reflected also in the entertainment provided - singing acts and pool music very much 50s and 60s; Bongo Bingo most evenings too. Mobility scooters available for guest use.
Dinner is very much 'safe' food - very English in the main. Hoped for more of a selection of Spanish cuisine and on our last evening there was at least Paella.
The lovely pool - plenty of sunbeds available, but despite signs displayed that it is not acceptable to reserve sunbeds, towels were always put on sunbeds early. This resulted in most of the beds taken for the day. Space around the pool is a bit cramped. So most beds taken early for the day and hardly anybody actually uses the pool! Thank goodness we had our large balcony and could stay there most of the day and pop downstairs for a swim.
We had a great holiday but I feel people should know that if you are younger than around 50 you will feel slightly out of place, although it will certainly make you feel very young!!!
I would recommend the Alicia and the area, but more for the older generation

Room Tip: Select rooms on First floor are excellent - stunning sea view and own comfortable sunbeds. Sun on b...

I am not going to go in to detail, suffice to say this place oozes quality. Staff, food, entertainment, facilities you name it. The down side, it didn't have one. If you are going to Cala Bona, book here if you can, there are a lot of repeat customers.

Room Tip: We had room number 111 and would request the same again.

We returned home yesterday from a week spent at the Alicia. I have to say it was one of the nicest hotels we,ve stayed in. Not perfect, a few niggles, but overall a lovely hotel. The positives:
1.The staff are very friendly, and efficient. Special mention Sara in the restaurant ( she looked after us in the a la carte restaurant), and Sergio the restaurant manager who runs a great restaurant.
2. We were given a free upgrade to a select room on the 1st floor. It was an end room (131) and very big with a large decked balcony. The room was nicely furnished and cleaned every day. And the view was amazing.
3. The food was lovely. Breakfast was great, plenty of choice, and full english to die for. Evening meals were of a high standard, a good choice. Each guest gets a night in the a la carte restaurant and our meal was fantastic, as was the service.
4. Public areas were spacious, clean and had plenty of seating, inside and out.

Niggles:
1. You feel like you are paying out so much on top of your accomodation. The only thing that was free was the wifi, but even that you had to be in the lounge area or you lost coverage. Pool towels, fridge, safe, tv remote, sauna, it all costs! Yes some are only deposits, but really? And if you wanted a couple of sunbeds on your large balcony you had to pay €7 a day! This was my biggest niggle.
2. I feel the maid didnt do the best job cleaning our room. It was clean when we arrived, but we found crumbs on the balcony that hadnt been swept. As the week wore on all that was done was beds made and sink cleaned. We had to rinse glasses ourselves and tidy up.
3. Pool, gardens area always full. Unfortunately if you want to find room to put your sunbed you need to go down at 8 as everyone does. And as many guests return every year and all know each other, its hard finding space as they take over. The solarium looked lovely but you dont stand a cat in hells chance of getting up there.

Because it is such a nice hotel there are many returning guests. The average age is 70, and only a couple of families were there. I did feel like i was in a care home for the week, but a very nice one. Also everyone was english, which i didnt like, as you find yourself listening to conversations when you just want to rest!
I loved the resort of cala bona, but again predominately over 60s and english. Cala millor gives a more cosmopolitan feel. Thomsons were excellent as usual, great flight seats, transfer and rep in resort, although we had no need of her services.
We like to try different places each time so we wont be going back, but we would use a Protur hotel again, and Thomsons.

We revisited the hotel two weeks ago since our last stay 2 years ago.
The rooms are clean and tidy and the food in the main is good for the price you pay. Views from the 5th floor are terrific!!!!

I am not going to bang on about the good points as most of our stay was very good.

Minus points never seem to change, the British are now leading the pack for booking sunbeds hours before they are needed. We gave up trying to get a decent sunbed as towels were left on them first thing in the morning. I still have some pride left in me so I did not join the clan. Give me a job to get up early and pay me 6 Euro's an hour and I will sort the problem out!!
The rooms also really need new pillows as the ones we had were spongelike and very un-hygenic after 2 weeks sweating because the Air-con in the rooms are very poor. The reps arrange a "blanket" trip which is a sales ploy for bedding etc. Take my tip, next time send a manager to buy new pillows for the Hotel!!!

My Air - con rattled away all night and when I reported it to the desk they said they would send someone to fix it. They never did and it kept me awake for 2 nights as I am a light sleeper.

Entertainment was quite good less for the "Jersey Boys " who were quite appalling. How they ever got a job in the Hotel singing is beyond me. Take a tip, give them a miss.
Still, all in all a very pleasant stay, if the Hotel addresses the minus points it will be better for everyone less the sunbed thieves.
