Got the bus to Arta and then walked 10km to Son Servera. Lovely walk in the hills, but no toilet facilities.

As we intended to walk from San Carrio to Son Severa (7.5 Km), the only way to get to San Carrio was by Taxi. No busses apparently run there which is not surprising as it is a quiet out of the way small village. Being four of us the taxi was economical at about €13. We had been to the market in Son Severa on the Friday when the place was buzzing and there were loads of Taxis which were even cheaper for the four of us than taking the bus, so a taxi or bus return to Cala Bona was not seen as a problem if we were too tired to walk back down to the sea.!
San Carrio is a really sleepy little place and we only saw a couple of locals and I got the impression that not many tourists go there to start a walk on the Via Verde. Also we had been advised to to end our walk in San Carrio as we would have to phone for a taxi and they might charge us 'dead-time' for coming to collect us.
The railway station at San Carrio is pristine and has toilets; just no people. Being an old railway line, it is reasonably flat and very wide, but there are long straight sections which can be off putting when on foot. We only encountered one lady walker and a local old lady walking her dog. There were only about twenty cyclists who passed us during the 7.5 km so my concerns about avoiding them as they whizzed past was completely unfounded, especially as the trial is wide. I get the impression that the vast majority of users are cycling. It was sunny and dry on the day we walked but not too hot (around 20C) so ok, but it would be hard in the heat as there is little shade. They have planted lots of trees which will help in future years.
The wild flowers were lovely and the rural scenery was pleasant. A very enjoyable and satisfying walk of just the right length of us. Not sure what floura will be in evidence at other times iof the year, but I suspect that May is a good time to see them at their best. No doubt someone will correct me.
The last little bit into Son Severa was a bit scruffiy so don't be put off if you start from here.
A great deal of effort has clearly gone into turning this economic disaster into a wonderful trail which I believe will mature and get better year on year. Well done!

From Cala Millor head north towards Son Servera to pick up the Via Verde trail . This may seem out of your way but it's very easy to follow the signs and avoids a busy main road which you might best avoid especially with kids. Pick up the trail in Son Servera and you could then choose south or north to Manacor or Arta . We headed to Arta on what is a spectacular and enjoyable trail with lots of views and interesting things to see including wildlife. Arta is lovely but we headed south to Malacor on the MA 3334 not the 15. This is important as the 3334 is very quiet and a small road with beautiful scenery and countryside. Manacor was also very interesting and beautiful where we had lunch by the church square. After that we searched for the start of the Via Verde again which is tricky so we asked locals. Then back towards Son Servera but coming off the trail shortly before the end on a quiet road into Cala Millor avoiding the main road again. About 55k round trip but parts can be done easily with kids if a shorter distance is required. Scenery and views are spectacular and the towns are very interesting. It's a wonderful way to see the non tourist side of Mallorca !

The route was an old railway line & is fairly level so easy riding for all, the track is hardcore, a little rough in patches but nothing to worry about. It's easy to follow, marker boards dotted along with confirmation of where you are on the route & bits of facts about wildlife etc, in 4 languages. You cross a few minor roads along the way. I think you could do the whole route easily in a day if you start in the morning, it depends on how you want to spend your day & on how hot it is.

We hired bikes in Cala Bona for a day (6euro per day). The Via Verda is about 15 mins inland mostly on a cycle route so safe, Our day was to ride to Arta for the market. The route is easy to find, when we were there it was quite & a really nice way to spend the day. The market was nice & so is the town of Arta, pricey considering it's not on the coast, well worth a visit.

We then hired bikes a couple of days later, picked up the route at the same place & went the other way to stopping for lunch as Son Carrio, very quite, cheap lunch 5 mins off the route. The wild flowers were out all along the route, a lot of trees & plants have been planted along the route, in a few years time it will be beautiful & fairly shaded by the trees. I expect it gets very hot along the route in the summer but in April it was lovely.

There are plenty of pick-nick sites along the route with bike racks & bins, no loos.

Some bike hire shops stay open until about 8pm while others only 5pm. You can hire at an hourly rate if you just want to ride along the prom or down to S'illiot, the rate is cheaper if you hire for more than 1 day at a time but remember you may have a sore bottom if you're not used to riding a bike!

6 euros well spent for a day's entertainment.

We used the via verda for both cycling and walking during the first week of April 2016.

The surface is packed gravel and so is suitable for mountain or hybrid bikes. As an old railway line there are no steep hills but there are some long shallow inclines, but that said most people including children should be able to manage to ride some if not all of the 28 km trail. The least attractive bit of the route is the area around the Son Servera 'station' and here there's also graffiti, abundant evidence of dog walkers that don't clean up after their dogs and some vandalism to the station. That aside though, the scenery is generally very pleasant if not outstanding and the path is well maintained so it makes for a peaceful and enjoyable ride or walk. Hundreds of trees have been planted to line the route in many places and these will no doubt look even better later in the season when they leaf and blossom and in future years as they grow. We found the path to be very sparsely used especially towards the Manacor end.

There are 'stations' along the way at the different villages and whilst these looked good (apart from Son Servera) and suggested the possibility of refreshments and toilets, they were in fact all closed apart from the one in Arta. There are also other picnic areas with benches and tables at various points. When we cycled into Manacor we found the end of the trail to be somewhat abrupt with no 'station' and instead you find yourself at a busy road (though still with cycle lanes) on the edge of town. Manacor is a busy working Majorcan town rather than a tourist destination. We found Arta at the other end of the trail to be much more geared to visitors. You could hire bikes from the Arta 'station' although we hired bikes in Cala Bona and cycled up the red route to Son Servera and joined the trail there.

One of the main frustrations of the trail when cycling is that at every point where it crosses a road, lane, track or even driveway you are just about forced to come to a stop by staggered barriers. At a guess these are about every km but sometimes they are more frequent.

In summary then this is a nice trail away from the traffic but with frequent stop barriers which will be frustrating for some cyclists. In early April it's very quiet but the facilities along the way are closed.
