“A Real Spanish Retreat”
Reviewed September 21, 2013

A lovely, traditional Andalucian style hotel in a very remote location. If you are looking for a few days to get away from it all - this is the place! We found the hotel to be very quiet which was perfect. Our room (a classic double) was great, a good size with comfortable bed. Breakfast was excellent, a very good selection. Staff were very friendly and helpful.
The one major problem we had was the expense of the food at the two hotel restaurants. I know that coming to an expensive hotel, you should expect the restaurants to be pricey, but we found for the price the food wasn't actually that good. Our meal for 2 was 100 Euros ( for 2 starters and 2 mains, one glass of wine). The two restaurants were far too similar offering fine, gourmet dining. Would have been better to have a cheaper alternative as I'm sure most people would agree. Even lunch was expensive - for a sandwich 10-15 euro is ridiculous. I think the hotel were playing on their remote location, knowing that the guests don't really have any alternative. However, we did explore the area and found some nice (and much cheaper) restaurants on nearby village Riofrio. Would also highly recommend the restaurant at nearby Hotel Rural La Paloma. Delicious home-cooked Spanish food at a reasonable cost - the 2 of us ate a lovely meal for 40 Euros.
The outdoor swimming pool was lovely and spacious with comfy beds. However, the pool was freezing cold so I didn't go in and there was a real wasp problem which was annoying. I would recommend using the spa, we had it to ourselves! The massage I had was average and a bit disappointing to be honest, considering the price I paid. My husband did some horse riding, which we would recommend.

Room Tip: I think all rooms would be good, we asked for a top floor room to get views and hoping it would be q...

Great peaceful hotel. Evening meals were good quality with good service. Bar service was a little slow. Massive pool with loads of space. Service around the pool could be improved. Overall beautiful hotel for a peaceful break.

We love this hotel, my Husband and I stayed one night. Beautiful surroundings and the hotel itself feels authentic old Spain with a seriously luxurious spin. Service is second to none. We did feel that the food in the restaurants was overpriced, we ate in "La Finca" on the evening and Starters were 20 -25 euros (So I didn't have one!). The food was lovely, however.....! Pool area is a beautiful grassy oasis though they do seen to have a problem with wasps. My Husband got stung which was very painful and did mean our relax by the pool was less relaxing. Breakfast was amazing, everything you could possibly think of was on offer as well as things you wouldn't, even a glass of Cava, Nice! Checked out the pool bar for lunch and a burger was 20 Euros, so we left and went elsewhere for lunch. Shame as it would have been lovely to have lunch overlooking the pool. Overall we really enjoyed our stay.

The staff values customer service and it showed from the moment we arrived. We were greeted with Zumo and a smile! The grounds are beautiful. Walking through the hallways takes you on a journey back in time to old Spain. If you are sensitive to heat, especially at night, make sure to secure a cooler, lover level room. We were initially in room 21, which was absolutely gorgeous. The room offers stunning views of the property and the mountains. The roof terrace was comfortable and very spacious. However, it was impossible to cool the room enough to make it comfortable for sleeping. We ultimately moved to room 63, which was fantastic and cool enough to sleep! We would definitely visit again (maybe next time, not int the peak of Summer).

Room Tip: If you don't tolerate heat very well, tell the staff that it's important that you are placed...

This gorgeous resort hotel is situated in a very remote location - its own driveway through its grounds is more than 2 miles long! At the same time it is easy to drive to visit surrounding places of interest, including Granada.

Our suite (r4) is very old Spain and has its own roof terrace. It has been beautifully modernized while retaining the period charm.

All the staff were extremely helpful and friendly.

The food is excellent but we would have liked some variety in the dinner menu during our week-long stay. This is important if you like (as we do) wine with your dinner because of the remoteness of the location & drink-driving! A taxi to a local restaurant, even only a couple of miles away, is very costly.

We enjoyed playing tennis and table tennis during our stay but we were a bit disappointed that the equipment was not totally up to scratch. The table tennis net was broken our entire stay and the net on the tennis court had no centre strap and was in need of replacement. These are minor points, but details are important in a hotel of this high calibre.

For the main part this hotel got the details right and we definitely expect to return one day.

Room Tip: Take a look at room 4 which is a suite.

Our first visit in 2011 was only two nights and we loved it so much we vowed to return. This time was stayed three nights and enjoyed it just as much.

It's a unique place, set in its own huge estate (which I rode around for an hour on one of the hotels Andalucian horses).

Our room was a Jnr Suite. Lovely and spacious, rustic Spanish decor. Great big bathroom, shower and terrace.

Food is fab in the morning and evening but I agree with other posts that lunch could be better, and cheaper.

The service isn't 100% - more like 75%. The staff are willing and friendly, but just lack the slickness that comes from a really excellent service policy.

The horses are in great condition but v dirty and the tack is old and filthy. Stables are not v nice but once you are out hacking that doesn't matter. It could be amazing with a tidy up, some flower pots, drinks when you get back from a ride etc...

Kids club is a tiny room next to the pool bar. Angela the lady who runs it is very good and our daughter loved her! However it also needs a paint and could be much improved... Loved the kids dinner club from 8-9.30 which meant our daughter had dinner with the other kids then they did a little disco and she joined us at our dinner table for dessert afterwards :-)

Only real complaint is on our last day the breakfast was overrun with guests and not enough room to sit.

In summary we really like it and 'put up' with the niggles above as its soooo beautiful and we love the remote feel of the location. Looking forward to our next stay!!

Our one-week stay at this unique place was really a unique experience. The hotel provides a luxurious feeling but in an elegant and understated way that is very relaxing and enjoyable. We stayed in a spaceous junior suite with our own garden/terrasse and loved the quite evenings and the surroundings and the wild animals. There is a fantastic pool and a miniclub for kids, so this place provides lots of fun for families withs kids as well. There are two dinner restaurants and the La Finca is truly great with its outside serving and extremely great food. The breakfast is also very, very good and kind of one of the highlights of the day. But unfortunately you can not say the same about the lunch. Uninspired, tasteless and expensive... Sorry to say. But in total we really, really loved this place and the kindly and helpfull staff that helped to make this one of our top-5 hotel experiences
