“Nice break from busy cities in Spain”
Reviewed October 6, 2012

This is a lovely, rustic hotel. The rooms are spacious with the standard amenities. The grounds beautiful. The food and service are average. There is an extra fee to use the spa pool/health club area. Seems unfair at this price point.

We stayed at Barcelo La Bobadilla in August 2012 during our visit to Granada. I booked the hotel through Leading Hotels of the World site, thinking that this is ultimate luxury in the countryside. Although it was a pleasant stay, the website and photos give an exaggerated idea. In the hands of St.Regis or Hyatt hotels, this lovely property would become a truly luxurious escape destination

POSITIVES:
- upgraded to a rooftop suite with balcony (Leading hotels pass) with late check out
- La Finca restaurant and attentive service
- Big swimming pool
- 1000 acres of gardens, deep valleys with olive trees
- traditional Andulucian architecture with marble columns, stone floors
- lavish marble bathroom
- rich breakfast buffet

NEGATIVES:
- not maintained up to date, proof was the bed (with very dirty bed spread)
- miniscule gym with ancient treadmills
- annoying wasps attacking outdoor tables during breakfast, inspite of necessary precautions
- ants in the swimming pool

We are glad that we visited this hotel and had few good days, but would not be too mad about going there again

My husband and I spent three days of true peace and quiet at the Barcelo La Bobadilla. We stayed in a sunny Deluxe junior suite (room no. 2) with a fine view of the vast pool grounds and surrounding hills. At night, I fell asleep to the soothing sound of the pool's fountain and slept wonderfully well.

I enjoyed a couple of pampering spa treatments (with natural-based Spanish products), followed by romantic late afternoon walks exploring the hotel's vast property with my husband. One suggestion: since the paths are mostly unpaved, I would recommend comfortable footwear.

We particularly appreciated dining on the open-air terrace of La Finca for its refined fare and civilized atmosphere. Every dish we chose was delicious and well-presented. Although one important detail which management should improve is the outdoor lighting; the blindingly bright rooftop spotlight did not do justice to the otherwise pleasant setting.

La Bobadilla is actually only a 30 min drive from Malaga (and 1 hour from Marbella), but it certainly feels like it is "in the middle of nowhere". And it is precisely for this secluded quality that we were able to unwind, relax and recharge our batteries.

We have stayed here 5 times and although it is not perfect, we have kept coming back. Last trip was Aug 2011. What is good? Perfect for the 3/4 day stay at the end of a self catering coastal break for us. My girls have always loved the pool, paddle tennis and tennis, table tennis, and when they were young, the kids club. We all like the breakfasts, being left alone, cycling or running in the grounds, great for keeping fit, and the late drinks and dinners. The rooms have always been great, air con good, and room service friendly.
What is not so good? Not the place for. 2 week stay, too isolated and not enough to do, although the lakes at Antequera are fabulous, the Alhambra is near enough. Wld not want to spend time in the spa, too dark, expensive etc but did hv a good massage once.
The wasps are an issue in the summer but we solved it by eating breakfast indoor and dinner after dark.

So in conclusion, great for a short term stay, but too quiet for longer than 5 days!

Room Tip: Rooms 31/32 best!

If your kids are excited about activities such as shooting and archery forget about it. Despite the advertising, they do not offer these activities, at least not in August 2012. If you look forward to ATV riding, they have low level Chinese vehicles that are not fun to ride and the trails are not that special. If you do not have a family, the food is good and the people are nice and helpful. During the hot summer the aircon should do a better job. Take a liter of water to the pool, which is large and refreshing, because you will be parched waiting for service. And, if you need a drink after 430pm forget about it as the closest bar to the pool will be closed.

I wouldn't make this a destination holiday rather a stopover to visit Granada or something else nearby and don't wish to stay in a city hotel. The wasps are annoying at breakfastandthe spa is way below average. Perhaps the worst massage I have ever had in a small room, with a tiny bed and a completely inexperienced therapist.

I wanted this place to work but it came up short on many fronts.

I will make this very brief because I know that you don't want to read through long, endless reviews so I will get right to the point........if you want a relaxing, beautiful property that is in the middle of nowhere yet offers everything on-site so you really don't need to go off property, THIS IS THE PLACE. Great physical property, great "feel" to the place, nice people on-staff. I am tough to please and I loved this place.......enough said. Go !!

The Bobadilla is a stunning property, and we were given a gorgeous suite with rooftop terrace and lovely furnishings and very comfy beds The pool is delicious (but mind the little biting ants...)Excellent housekeeping and very attentive staff.
.Breakfast is an opulent spread (cava etc included should you wish) and the food and service in La Finca restaurant and winelist was superb.
Despite all of this veneer, we did not enjoy our stay here as much as other locations on our trip- the hotel is very much in the middle of nowhere- great if you want to use it as a base to see Granada or Cordoba (further) but we found little of huge interest in the immediate area- so if you tire of fine dining there isnt really much choice nearby except the cafe in the nearest village - this might not have mattered had it been a romantic break, as we may have happily dined again in la Finca, but the options for childrens food is limited- there is one kids menu which prevails in all three restaurants and there only so often you can justify paying 15 euros for kids spagetti bolognaise or 22 euros for kids fish and chips- a bistro/ cafe menu where you could get a simple sandwich at lunch time would have made all the difference.

It felt quite quiet when we were there- or else all the other guests were very sedate- you could hear a pin drop! The website makes a big deal about kids activities, and there is a lovely girl who looks after this, but there were no other children there when we were there,(except two clad in tennis whites)- not the hotels fault. (July?)

By the way, make sure you demand a helmet if you take out the 4 x 4 buggies. When my husband requested this the receptionist said people didnt really bother with them (though we demanded one for our son)- however he banged his head very badly (he signed the waiver so ultimately his choice but it put a dampner on the stay.

The staff are really attentive, the place looks great, the food is superb, the pool is lovely- its all there- it just seemed to us to miss something- soul?, life?, fun?
