Muthu Grangefield Oasis Club
Ranked #25 of 27 Hotels in Mijas
Reviewed July 10, 2013

Wife and I (ages 32 & 34) spent the last 2 weeks of June at Grangefield with 2 kids (ages nearly 4 years and 8 months), and their grandparents.

Firstly let me just say that this is not in Mijas (Mijas is a village in the mountains), it's not in Cala de Mijas either which is about a 5 - 10 minute drive away. In fact its nearest town is a place called Riviera del sol.
If you are planning to drive (which i would recommend) then I would not attempt to do it without a sat nav as its not easy to find. GPS coordinates which take you right to the reception door are
GPS 36º 30´ 4,44´´ N 4º 42´ 46,97´´ W
Drive is easy enough only takes about 20 - 25 mins from Malaga airport.
I was worried about driving having never driven abroad before but after an initial ten minutes of terror and panic all was fine.

We had an 2 infinity apartments, one was ground floor number A1 and 1 was higher floor number A4. On arrival both apartments were very clean. Apartments were well equipt - both had full kitchens with all we needed, dishwashers and utility room with washing machine. Both were spacious, both had 2 bathrooms and 2 double bedrooms. The upstairs one had a reasonable sized patio and apartment A1 had a huge outdoor terrace which was an added bonus. Overall the apartments were very good, perhaps starting to date a little in some areas but to say anything bad about them would be nit picking.

Please note we had 2 "infinity" apartments which are the top spec ones in the best locations there were other smaller apartments on the site which we can't comment on.

As for cleaning etc while there, towels were plentiful, linen was changed however there was not much evidence of other cleaning (sweeping / mopping dusting etc) but we are pretty tidy clean folk anyway so maybe they thought it didn't need doing.

The complex itself is well presented with 2 outdoor pools, both of which ranged daily from freezing, very cold or just cold, with the pool nearer the bar being the warmest. Not ideal as the 8 month old would get too cold after a while in the water - but not an issue for adults and older kids. There was an indoor pool / spa which we didn't try as they insisted that you wore swimming caps (even me having a skinhead lol) which they would happily sell you which i thought was just a money making idea so we gave it a miss.

There are a lot of steps, everywhere, a bit of a pain in the rear with a buggy but nothing that can't be managed. We're no athletes and managed carrying the thing up and down when required (which was often) however i would not fancy staying there if i had mobility issues that's for sure.

Restaurant was OK, food quality was fine but a little on the pricey side compared to places in the towns. Same story with the drinks in the bar. The snack bar rated higher with prices that seemed more normal and a decent choice but only available at certain times.
Shop on site was very small, limited choice and expensive.

Staff were mostly indifferent, not the cheeriest but not rude or grumpy either somewhere in between - with the exception of the lifeguard who was a really nice bloke who seemed to make a real effort with the kids - other staff should follow his example.

The real thing that lets Grangefield down is its location - its a good mile and a half up a steep hill in the middle of a residential area with nothing much nearby except for Bunkers Bar about 5 mins walk away, handy for popping in if attempting the walk to the town of Riviera del sol at the bottom of the hill.
Me and the wife did the walk to the bottom ourselves and managed fine however the pavements were not the best in places and there would be no way a child could have walked it and we would have struggled with the buggy. We didn't try walking back up we opted for a taxi instead but I'm guessing it would not have been much fun.
Thankfully we hired a car and as such visited loads of nice places nearby , Mijas, Cala de Mijas, Benalmadena (very nice marina) and Puerto Banus (yachts, millionaires, fancy cars and bimbos). This was a blessing in disguise as we did more than we would have done otherwise.

Taxis cost 6-7 euros 1 way up or down the hill.
At the bottom of the hill there is 2 supermarkets (Mas is very good) a handful of bars and restaurants, Korma is good as is the Italian that is next to the Chinese (its name escapes me)

If you just want to read a book and relax and are not too bothered about value or choice then don't hire a car.
If you want a little more choice and value then be prepared to walk the hill each day or shell out for taxis.
If you want infinite choice and wish a few good trips out then hire a car, loads and loads to do all within 20 mins drive, loads of busier places all competing for business in the larger resorts so plenty of bargains to be had.

Hope this helps.

Dear guest,

Many thanks for your detailed comments as I am sure they will help us to improve our services and facilities.
Please note that we have a courtesy bus service for our guests to go to the beach or shopping area at a very reasonable price. I would also like to add that we have recently prepared a package which includes unlimited usage of transport, WI-FI and the SPA at a reasonable price. This package has been very well received by all our Guests.
With regards to your comment about the usage of caps, please note that the compulsory use of caps in the Jacuzzi and heated pool is due to national and regional health and safety regulations.
Finally I would like to bring to your attention that our reception staff would be most happy to find you a competitive prices for a car rental as you have rightly mentioned that those who wish to explore the surroundings or go inland to visit our ancient cities, there is loads to do in a 20 minutes drive
Many thanks for spending your holidays with us, at Oasis we all hope to welcome you back soon

Came for a week away with my 2 teenage daughters and was a little apprehensive after reading some of the reviews! Actually had a very enjoyable stay. Staff were friendly and reception dealt with any problems I had efficiently. Pre-paid for 4 days half board and although I found the breakfast to be a little limiting, the evening meal had enough variety and the food was a good standard and for £85 for 4 days each for both- I thought this to be good value. The apartment was spacious and well equipped although the balcony didn't really benefit from any sun. The pools were well maintained as was all the greenery and plantations around the complex. I booked car hire from the airport which I think is a must if you want to get around. Will probably book to come here again next year!

My family & I were looking forward to visiting this resort as it was highly recommended by the timeshare people. It was our 3rd visit to this area and anticipation was high based on the photos. The reality was somewhat different and I am glad we had a 10 night stay instead of 14 as we have very disappointed.

On arrival at 11.30 at night, I would expect a warm friendly service. Only 1 of the staff over the 10 days , I could safely say we're helpful. Adding to the nightmare, the apartment we were given, was clean spacious etc, however no balcony and to many steps to manoeuvre before getting to the swimming pool. This resulted in 2 more moves and once moved, the apartment we settled for had a balcony and was ideal for our needs although could have need some new furniture.

The swimming area was very nice with2 pools, however the clamour for loungers every morning I found to be ridiculous with people waiting for gates to be opened at 10am by the lifeguards. There was from time to time leaves & stuff in the pool. However I found that they were being cleaned on a regular basis.

The pool bar was again decent, but no atmosphere unless plenty of people at the pool. No children's entertainment which I found staggering as there were plenty of children about . Prices a bit expensive also. The happy hour was good although quality could have been better.

Night time entertainment -nothing much to say as it was very poor. Very few people at pool side at night- for. Holiday complex- staggering. Bar closed around 10.30-11.00. Again a trick being missed with the amount of tourists who want to unwind. I have never known a pool bar to close as early.

Internet connection very poor & quite annoying.

Finally the location. A nice part of the world in general, however to out of the way. A car is a must. Only the fittest will want to walk the 30mins down & back.

In summary, a resort which has plenty to offer, but is sadly lacking!!

Dear guest,
Many thanks for taking the time to write this review and help us in improving our facilities and services.
As you have mentioned not all apartments of Grangefield Oasis have a terrace and though it is our endeavor to provide apartments with balconies, there are times when we are forced to use apartments without balconies. The best solution is to make a reservation to this category of apartment.
We would like to inform you that the Pool bar hours have been extended until midnight so that our guests can enjoy having a drink “al fresco” after dinner. We also have entertainment program consists of 3 different singers, Flamenco and Eagles show- 5 days out of 7 to ensure we have something different to offer for every taste and age on our terrace
Our Wi Fi network has been recently upgraded by our IT team increasing the speed connection and coverage to all the apartments. For the convenience of the Guest we have a promotion where by our Guest can utilize WI-FI, Transfer to the beach and the SPA at a very nominal price.
We are sure that you would enjoy and experience our new promotions and services on your next visit to our Property.
Many thanks for your holidays and we are confident that your next visit will be to your full satisfaction and a memorable one.

Arrived friday night found the reception staff very helpful and knowledgeable.
Were able to buy a welcome pack of food and milksurrounded around 20 euro to tide us until the shops opened the follow day. Most items lasted us throughout our stay.
The apartment was probably the best I've stayed in , very clean and full of all the facilities needed for a holiday in an apartment.
The complex has two ample pools patrolled by a lifeguard in a central location with a perfect view of both pools. The pools are surrounded by gardens that provide shade to escape from the sun if needed.
The club lays on transport to and from la cala mijas for a small fee that also includes the use of the spa and wi fi in your room.
Only fault I could find was the location. When I go back , I will hire a car.

The hotel is fine but you need to go uphill for everything. The premises are too with no option for teen agers. Be careful because you need to pay for every single activity except the pool. So hope it does not rain...

We spent 2 weeks here at the beginning of June 2013 in a 2-bed apartment.

Good points first: The reception staff were very friendly and helpful. Although rather dated and tired, the rooms were well-equipped (washing machine, dishwasher, microwave, oven, coffee maker, TV, DVD player, radio cassette etc;) spacious enough and the cleaning / laundry service was very good. The gardens in the central 'courtyard' are very pretty (but overgrown in many areas) and there are 2 pools. It seems management have listened on the WiFi - this worked most of the time and the are obvious antenna around the place to boost the signal. Charges are not bad either if you have to pay and it is free in reception.

The bad points: As others have noted, unless you want to be stuck in the complex with virtually nothing to do, or spend a lot on taxis, you must hire a car. It is simply too far and too hilly to try to walk - the closest shops or eateries are not easily reachable unless you are a serial hiker. Partly because the complex is built on a steep hillside, many of the apartments get little or no sun - some of them like ours on the ground floor (A Block) were in perpetual darkness with overgrown trees blocking the morning light and a massive wall blocking anything else. Without the ability to check out all of the apartments, a good rule would be to be on the 2nd or 3rd floor if you want any light, and preferably on the tennis court side if you want light in the afternoon. Also, anywhere near the pool bar and you might regret the noise from the (distinctly below average) entertainment or the smell from the nightly BBQ whose chimney pokes up towards the balconies above.

From an access point of view, this place is a nightmare. Even our ground floor apartment meant scaling 15 - 30 steps depending on route - getting to the bar / pool a similar number, although some ground floor units on the tennis court side have flat access - but unless you fancy a really long walk around the complex, not to reception or the shop!

The bar / restaurant staff were not good. Grumpy and inattentive across the 2 weeks (except one female member of staff) and we were not impressed with the food. Others have mentioned temperature - cold food - we also had uncooked chips and tasteless food, only offset by the 2 for 1 drinks Happy hour from 16:00 - 19:00.

The gardens attract bugs - loads of them, including millions of ants and flying ants which even after closing the whole area including the pool for most of a morning for fumigation, didn't really solve the problem. There are also loads of birds, so a lot of poop on the paths and steps, despite the valiant efforts of the staff to keep it clean.

On the lower (road side where reception is) part of the complex you need to wear ear-plugs or sleep really well to not be woken between 3:30 and 4:00 by the bin collections - others have mentioned this and it is a pain.

The 2 pools were OK but not as clean as I would expect with lots of floating plant rubbish and other scum - not sure if the filtration system was working properly. There are not enough sun loungers and most of the ones there are broken or sagging so you're lucky if you get good ones. There is a scrum at 10:00 sharp to bag positions and loungers when the access doors are unlocked, and it is said places can't be reserved, but we never saw any towels being removed. There is insufficient terrace space around the pools for the number of users and we're glad we weren't there at the height of the season.

Overall then, average and although it may suit some people, we won't be back as there are much better options available.

Room Tip: Rooms away from the pool bar and entertainment will be quieter, as will those on the tennis court si...

Dear Guest
Thank you for your very detailed review. We do advertise this complex as built on a hill and therefore it is not suitable for people with mobility issues such as yourselves. Spring and early summer in this region does sometimes have bouts of insects due to the type of vegetation and flowers growing here. Our staff work hard to try to alleviate this and to keep the resort clean and tidy. Your comments on the sun loungers will be passed to our maintenance team. We are glad you received good customer service from our Reception staff and got good wifi.
We hope you come and stay again perhaps in one of our other hotels.
