My fiance and I stayed in the Escudo de Mijas for five nights in June 2007 and I just couldn't recommend it highly enough. We were in Mijas researching venues for our wedding, which we have decided to celebrate in Mijas as it is such a gorgeous place.

We are recommending the Escudo de Mijas to our wedding guests, so you couldn't get a better endorsement than that! When we told them that, they offered to show us all of the unoccupied bedrooms, and they are all equally good. All ensuite, with TV and minibar, etc.... The rooms on the top floor (8-10) have a balcony with chairs etc and views out over the countryside to the mediterranean sea - really fabulous. The remainder of the rooms don't have a balcony but do have big windows with flower boxes etc and I didn't check the view from all of them, but I'd imagine that the middle floor at least would also have the great views.

I think the Escudo is classified as a 'Hostal' but really I would describe it as a budget hotel. It doesn't have frills like a bar or breakfast service, but these things also make it more affordable. Anyway, like anywhere in Spain, it's always nicer to have breakfast out - all the cafes around do great cafe con leches and croissants etc.

The owners are clearly interested in the aesthetic, as there are so many lovely decorative details that give the place lovely character - the photos on their website really are representative.

We're going to make the Escudo our base for trips to Mijas - part of me didn't want to write such a glowing review as I don't want availability to limited in future, but I find Tripadvisor reviews so useful that I decided to be nice :)

The Escudo de Mijas is located right in the centre of Mijas just off Plaza de Constitution, which makes it an ideal base for exploring the many excellent bars and restaurants that are in Mijas. The accomodation was of an excellent standard, we stayed in room 4 which was at the front of the hotel with a balcony overlooking the coast. The room was spotless and very modern, the bathroom was very nice and also extremely clean, we had maid service every day and towels and sheets were changed every other day. The mini bar was restocked on a daily basis and there was also a T.V. and DVD player. The reception staff were very friendly, spoke superb English and were always very helpful and polite. Being a hostal it didn't have a pool etc.. and doesn't provide breakfast or snacks but don't let this deter you from staying as the coast is a mere 10 minute drive down the hill and there is a swimming pool approximately 3 miles away at Ossunias, we were also able to buy our own food for breakfast from the supermarket and store milk etc.. in the mini bar.
Mijas is a lovely resort to stay in if you are looking to get away from the more 'lively' resorts on the coast. It has some lovely restaurants (Osteria - Calle San Sebastian - for the Gambas Pil Pil, El Mirjo Blanco - Plaza De Constitution - for something abit special, El Puerto - main road into Mijas - for the BBQ especially the King Prawns and La Fiesta for pretty much everything) and bars (Bar Aroma - Calle San Sebastian - fantastic late bar, very chilled out, lovely cocktails and very reasonably priced and Cafe Bar Murillo - overlooking the Square at the top of the village) and there's a fair few things to keep you occupied during the day. I would recommend that if you decide the stay here you hire a car, as the village is only small and after a few days we found we were getting 'cabin fever'. Good places to visit are Ronda - fantastic mountain town about 50km away from Mijas, Puerto Banus - for the yachts and the 'beautiful' people in the marina who have to be seen to be believed!, and Selwo Animal Park near Estepona which is a zoo/safari park and is a fab day out for both adults and kids (if a little pricey!) Overall, I would highly recommend a stay in Mijas and would definately stay at The Escudo again!
