“A little gem in the heart of Mijas”
Reviewed August 6, 2013

Firstly, I would say don't be put off by my 3 star rating of this place. I have only given it 3 stars because it isn't really a hotel, it's more of a very comfortable hostel. However, as it doesn't offer some of the things you would expect in a hotel, such as breakfast, I have only rated it 3 stars.

It is situated right in the heart of Mijas, next to the small square. To reach it, you have to walk up some steps so bear this in mind if you have a pushchair or especially a wheelchair as there were no ramps in evidence. Also when you get to the hotel itself, there are a further 9 steps to walk up with no ramps.

Once inside the hotel, it is an oasis of calm. Decorated in Andalucian style, very cool and quiet. The room was comfortable and plenty big enough for a weekend trip which we were on. It had a large comfortable bed, air conditioning, a mini bar and plenty of wardrobe space. The bathroom was also well equipped and nicely decorated. The shower was over the bath - but the bath was a half size one that would require you to put your knees up to your chin in order to sit in it. The shower was very good although the warm water took a while to come through.

The staff were friendly although we didn't see much of them. They seem to be there to man the reception desk in the mornings and to clean the rooms.

When we arrived, our key was left on the reception desk for us as it was siesta time. You can come and go as you please and do't need to drive anywhere if you are intent on staying around Mijas.

There is no parking at the hotel, you can drop bags off at the bottom of the steps in the square but the car needs to be parked about 200m away in a public car park which is free - or 1€ if you want to park underground in the shade.

I really like this place. It's not trying to be anything other than a nice base to stay in Mijas. It isn't expensive but it delivers comfort and convenience.

We stayed here for four nights as we were attending a family wedding in Calla Mijas. I reserved two double rooms via email and, after reading reviews here, requested rooms on the higher floors. The hotel is tucked away off a small square in the centre of Mijas, it's so peaceful but is within walking distance of bars and restaurants. We were allocated rooms 8 and 9, on the second floor. Both were beautifully decorated and spotless and had large balconies with a table, two chairs and a sun lounger. The bathrooms were stocked with toiletries and hairdryers and had good size bath tubs. The coffee machine on the ground floor was really handy and the mini bars in the rooms were well stocked and reasonably priced. The wifi at reception was fine for downloading newspapers etc. There's also a roof terrace with amazing views. The staff ordered a taxi to get us to the wedding and couldn't have done more to make our stay perfect. This hotel is amazing value, we'll definitely be back.

Room Tip: Rooms on the second floor have larger balconies.

We've stayed in top hotels all over the world and whilst this isn't 5 star luxury it's absolutely perfect for a budget stay in a beautiful part of Spain. This hotel is clean and comfortable, is in a brilliant location and for the money you'll struggle to find better. The booking process was efficient and the staff are very friendly. Second time we've stayed here and wouldn't hesiate to book again. This place is a real hidden treasure. Ian & Rachael from Dubai.

We stayed only one night but enjoyed it very much. The price is reasonable, we paid €50 per night. No breakfast, no wifi except near the reception, but the rooms were lovely, decorated with unique furniture and accents, not compressed wood from Ikea. The whole place is spotlessly clean. The views of the two rooms we had were spectacular. I normally can´t abide hotels that don´t give you "free" wifi in the room but with these views at this price I´ll be nice. We have been to Mijas many times but didn´t know where this was. It´s right off the main square, if you are facing towards the sea it´s on the left up some rambling stairs. There are signs. Our mini visit to Mijas Pueblo was a huge success due mostly to how much we enjoyed our stay at El Escudo.

We stayed for tow nights here and I must say, if we were to go back, we would choose it again. From the moment we walked in (and you have to walk just a teeny bit from the bus stand or the car park), the lady at the reception- Margarita, was very warm and friendly(also speaks very good english).
They gave us a room on the first floor with a view to the sea. The room had a nice double bed, a biiig couch (which was made up like a bed later), and they had provided us with an extra bed.
The sleep quality was excellent and the bathroom- wonderfully appointed! My children thoroughly enjoyed the bath tub.
The room had a beautiful calm vibe and the attention to detail was quite remarkable.

The mini bar was not expensive for a hotel, there's free wifi and a coffee machine at the reception- more efficient than the one at CDG airport:-)) They also have a facility of checking in all by yourself with this machine installed right at the entrance of the establishment! It even gives you your room keys!!

If we went back to Mijas, we will definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: We had the room #4- great for a small family and with a sea view.

This hotel was totally a good find. Was drawn to it by the photos firstly. To say we found a jewel would be an understatement.
We stayed 5 nights in a top floor room where the rooms have the most spectacular views out across Mijas. The room was spotless, homely and plenty big enough. The en suite bathroom had everything we needed.
While I could understand some people wanting food facilities, this did not bother us at all, in fact it was more than a pleasure to walk the minute it takes to walk to the square for our first cup of tea/coffee every day.
Margarita on the front desk is lovely, very helpful and was always on hand when you needed something.
Really loved our stay and will definitely be back.

Lastholidayvideo stayed at the el escudo de mijas hotel this week. We were so confident with the reviews the hotel had. We even took our friends with us. We stayed four nights and loved every minute. We arrived extremely late on a Friday evening, pressed the buzzer on the door, didn't wait longer than 30 seconds. The door was opened and both room keys were ready for us. Perfect. Location is exactly where the action is in Mijas. Just off the centre and surrounded by gift shops and restaurants. But you would never know, as its tucked away behind the square, perfect. Our rooms were both very smart and both different in terms of decor and layout. We were on the second floor and had huge walk out balcony s overlooking the view of the mountains and sea. The room had an LCD TV and a minibar, which was well stocked. Downstairs in the lobby was a coffee machine, which accepted one euro coins and it was just what you wanted every morning, to wake you up. My view on previous comments around the hotel not offering breakfast would be. Simply, there are too many breakfast experiences nearby to sample at a very reasonable cost, so why would you want to deny yourself the experience. In relation to a bar, just goto the supermarket and get some more if there isn't enough in your minibar. We all got together in one room at the end of the night on the balcony looking out and drinking champagne. Reception was manned every day and when it wasn't you just pressed a button and someone was there to answer your question. The people on reception were very hospitable, friendly, understanding and warm. There is wifi in the hotel and its free. It was so good, that we were able to FaceTime every night from reception back ho e to the uk at zero cost. Pictures of the area will be posted later, but if you goto mijas and you want to experience real culture, then stay at the el escudo de mijas.
