“Fantastic week in the sun... Not a marketing ploy.”
Reviewed March 5, 2008

We "won" a holiday through Club La Costa and had to go to a 2 hour sales pitch, got £50 M&S vouchers for the effort and a holiday. All seemed a bit to good to be true, the hidden costs work out to be around £70 each for up to four people. Your accomodation is not allocated until 3 days before you leave, and the flights can be very early morning. I was really not to sure if I would go, but I filled out all the forms and stuck with it, and had the most fantastic week.

Marina del sol was just wonderful, great luxuary apartment and only one sales pitch, once they knew we were not interested we heard nothing more. Though if you were interested in time share I would say this was a great company, I sound like I work for them!!!

I am used to 4-5 star resorts, and this was a definate 4 star quality. El Tajo Restaurant does a fantastic steak and is on site, and if you travel to Mijas and want a special meal go to El Padrastro brilliant gastronomic affair. So from dreading going to the tacky costa del sol, to thinking it was a brilliant place for a week, just hire a car and get out and about.

I also have a young baby and the apartment had everything from a microwave to a hand held liquidiser, and fully equiped working kitchen, and loads of different heated pools, so would suit everyone from those with a family to couples young and mature.

Couldn't reccomend it highly enough.

  • Liked — Sea view, everything you need on site.
  • Disliked — On site restaurants are more expensive as to be expected.

I spent 1 week at this resort with my partner and another couple. The holiday was part of a marketing holiday. We paid a total of 80 each including insurance and our expectations were low.

The Apartment

This was a 2 bedroom maisonette. Upstairs had 1 double room, 1 twin and a bathroom. Downstairs was a tiny (but perfectly well equiped) kitchen, a dining table to seat 6 and a living room with sofas and a TV. There was a small balcony with a plastic table and chairs.

The kitchen has a fridge freezer, microwave, oven and hob and enough cuttlery and crockery for 6. We arrived to find the basics provided such as milk, bread and biscuits. The TV has several English channels, BBC1, ITV, Sky1, BBC3, Sky News and a few others such as some awful movie channels that don't show anything you'd want to see.

The accomodation was clean and more than adequate. The only real complaint was the noise. The walls are paper thin. If someone is walking around upstairs it sounds like a heard of elephants running around. We didn't really sleep well as you can hear every car or person that passes.

The Resort

There is a busy motorway that runs past the front of the resort and separates it from the beach. You can access the beach over a foot bridge or through what we affectionately referred to as the sewer pipe.

There are a few pools scattered around. We were allocated one and it was quite small and busy. There are quite a lot of restaurants and bars on the resort. We had breakfast at Safaris, Dinner at El Tajo and lunch at Zackery's. All were fine but nothing special and over priced compared to what you can get in town.

There are 2 food shops on site, a tiny one called Sam's Pantry and a less tiny one that they don't really tell you about as it's not Club La Costa owned. 15 minutes walk away there is a massive shopping centre called Mirimar with a huge supermarket. It's really cheap. I bought some bottles of wine for under 2E to bring home.

It is all very hilly but we didn't mind as are fit and healthy but may be a consideration if you have mobility issues or children. There is a little train that drives around. We went on it once and it is so stupidly slow that it's quicker walking.

The Location

We were discouraged by Club La Costa from leaving the site with tales of muggers, scratch card touts and monsters. Despite constant warnings, we didn't see any. Fuengirola is a bit tatty which I suspect is the real reason they don't want you to leave as it may put you off. Probably about a 30 minute walk along the beach front until you reach any ok restaurants.

There is a zoo in town which we thoroughly enjoyed. It's 15E for an adult and 9E for kids. The little meercats are soooooo cute!

The town is pretty big with loads of shops and restaurants. We walked around for hours and hardly scratched the surface.

The beach is ok. It's not the nicest or the cleanest but it's ok. We strolled along it plenty of times, paddled in the water and collected shells. It seemed to fulfill our beach needs.

The Presentation

We arrived on Sunday and were told our sales pitch would be Wednesday. We were not bothered before, or after, then. Our fears that we would be hounded were completely unfounded. We were picked up at 10:15am by Dennis and taken to Safaris for breakfast. He then took us to Miramar for some reason and left us there for 1/2 hour while he took care of something (?)

Only the qualifying couple were required to attend but we dragged our friends along for moral support. With a few subtly probing questions he recognised them for the penniless hippys that they are and, after Mirimar, dropped them back at the apartment.

We were shown around 2 apartments and Dennis continued to ask us questions about our jobs, the UK presentation, why we hadn't signed up etc throughout. After that he took us to Safaris for a pint and asked us what we didn't like about Club La Costa and why we had taken the holiday if we didn't like it. I explained that all we wanted was the cheap holiday and that I thought the package was expensive and not suitable for us. I told him that I expected him to offer us trial membership which is 7 weeks holiday for 3.5k and we would have to take the first week in Tenerife and have another sales pitch. I told him that this is about what we would normally spend on holidays anyway and would not have to endure any sales pitches or be told where I'm allowed to travel to. He didn't disagree.

Dennis then took us to the sales room which was lots of tables of people on marketing holidays and men in suits with big fake smiles. He sat us down and offered us drinks which we declined. He asked if we wanted to know anything else about Club La Costa. We said no. He drove us back to the apartment and we were by the pool by 1.

In Conclusion

The sales pitch was a walk in the park and we weren't really pressured at all. There isn't that much to do. You could probably find entertainment by travelling a bit further afield and doing some excursions, there are some available doing things like going to Gibraltor or on a geep safari. If you want a week in the sun chilling out by the pool then look no further.

Spent a week 05th Jan to 12th Jan 08 with hubby and me mum at
Santa Cruz Suites at Marina Del Sol at Club La costa next to Fuengirola
on the Costa Del Sol as part of a ''free holiday''. Fees of around £30.00 per person (Can’t remember exactly)
We were really worried about it and we were expecting something really bad but we had a fantastic huge 2 bed flats, whit everything you need in it. They told us that because it was low season they were giving out the best flat but that in red season they will give us the standard flat which were a bit smaller but still ok (we had a look at them too). Nothing special about the welcome pack but it was
On our third day they took us for breakfast and a tour of the complex. We listened and even had a nice time with them. At the end we said no to buy and they left us alone for the rest of the holiday.
So guys if you are offer a £30.00 per person holiday go for it. We had one week to visit Gibraltar, Seville, Granada, Malaga, and Cordoba.
That was a really cheap holiday for us. We rented a car at Malaga airport for £80.00 a week, no petrol in.
Breakfast and dinner in the flat, like if you were at home but the food there taste much better. Lunch outside in restaurant. We didn’t try any restaurant they because we had a look at it and if it’s to have disgusting overpriced English food I rather stay at home. EAT OUTSIDE and get real Spanish food. Also it’s not on the cost that you will find great food. All restaurants there are for tourist. Try to go inland.
Another thing don’t go there for the beach, That was by far the worst one I ever saw.

We Have just returned home after a weeks stay at Club La Costa in Mijas resort Costa del sol. We hired a car from malagarcars.com. at the airport, we booked it on their web site before we left the U.K. and it was waiting for us when we landed, 105euros,for 7 days plus a half a tank of diesel and you bring the car back empty, (a bargain)., I advise that a car is a must if you intend going to the c.l.c. resort. On arriving at the resort after about a 30min drive we had no problem booking in and the receptionist was fantastic, we were given the keys to our apartment and a map, the complex is like a little village with all types of properties on it some of which were privately owned. so we drove to our accomodation, we were well impressed with the accomodation, I called it the pent-house suite, we had 2 bedrooms one with a queen sized double bed, and the other with 2 singles, there was also two bath-rooms, the first with a shower ,wash-hand basin and toilet, and the second had a bath, with shower over, wash-hand basin and toilet, the kitchen was well presented with micro-wave, washing machine, cooker, dish washer and a fridge freezer and all the things you need for self catering, also on arrival there was a complimentary hamper of food just to get you started,i.e. eggs, bread, jam ,biscuits etc, which was a nice touch... the sitting room was also impressive with T.V ( all english stations) and d.v.d. player, and comfortable
seating, this all lead out to the balcony through patio doors, we had a sea view. Towels were changed every day and cleaned once a day, there are 4 swimming pools on site one which is heated out doors and it was like taking a bath, there is also about 4 resturants, we ate most of the time at the one ajoining the reception, we found that the best, it does get busy so booking prior to you attending is a good idea.......another place we can recommend is off site. and just down the road from the resort towards Fuengirola, you pass a B.P.Garage, and a camp site beetween the two there is a little road drive up there about 50 yrds, and you will find a little resturant called the Pondarosa, the food in there is fantastic reasonably priced and the benifit of a big log fire. The weather was also great 22 -25 every day and no rain. A must is a drive to Gibraltar, (dont forget your Passports) to get there takes about an hour on the coast Road A7, but a lot quicker if you take the AP7 (which is the toll road and costs about 3.80 euros, you can pick up you duty free dirt cheap £9-50p for 200 fags, but that is all you are allowed to take out, and the customs leaving are quite strict and may possibly search your car so don,t be tempted to over-do it so keep to the limit, of course you use english money there. I can also recommend a trip to porta Banus, Marina to see how the other half lives, all the yachts over 2 million, I saw a pair of shoes in a shop window for 950 euros, but a cup of coffee over looking the marina will cost 4 euros so thats not too bad, but its worth a look to see all the expenive cars and boats on the front. The zoo in Fuengirola is also worth a look so is the little white village up on the hill behind the resort, but you have to drive up there. all in all we had a great time with great accomodation, food, and weather for febuary, and we enjoyed visiting all the little towns and resorts in the costa del sol.We are most certainly returning later on in the year,

We booked to stay here for a week, via RCI timeshare transpher, we were booked into unit 276a, having driven to the recpetion, and receieving our keys and a map, we were left to go searching for the apartment, having done we, we unlocked the large metal gate covering the from sliding door, which was very bad repair and extremely badly fitting extra lock.
Having gained entry the room was very dark and dingy, we look to open the curtains to reveal very small windows, with the view blocked by cage security bars and plants.
It was evident the room had not been prepared for our arrival and would never at any point get the benfit of the sun. (a well furnishied prison cell)
We expressed our disatisfaction and returned to the reception.
The assistance recieved left a lot to be desired, no alturnative was suggested and no discussion was to be had regarding the standard of the accomdation.
Thankfully RCI where more than helpfull and found us an excellent alturnative with 5 minutes drive away.
WE do not recommend this accomdation especially if you are offered units 272 to 281.
