Hotel Solverde Spa & Wellness Center
Ranked #3 of 14 Hotels in Vila Nova de Gaia
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed December 14, 2012

Visiting this hotel in December and in its full Christmas decor was simply amazing. Although I did not ask it looked like some of the staff had been given the opportunity for some creative flair and it worked.

This beach front location combined with spa and wellness facilities is just a short journey form the amazing city of Porto. Rooms are sea facing, comfortable and clean with balconies and outside sea water pools are heated of course.

The hotels restaurant is very capable of delivering the ultimate dining experience and to be honest on my travels I rarely take dinner in the hotel. This is one time I am pleased to have eaten certainly some of the best presented and tasting food for a long time.

Occupancy levels vary and this is a popular hotel so early booking is to be considered.

Room Tip: ask when booking for higher floors

If you want to be in Porto and yet near the sea, this hotel has excellent location-with a beautiful sea-view. Nice lobby as you enter. Room was fairly comfortable. Balcony was ordinary and not clean. The pool and spa were adequate; the spa could have a more prominent signage for men/women- comprehensible to non-Portuguese people too. Use of cap by men spoiled the fun of swimming. Reasonably close to a spate of seaside restaurants and a casino to boot.Does not feel like a 5-star property though. When I was chatting with the taxi driver on way to the airport and told him about the Yeatment being a much better 5 start hotel, he said ,'how can you compare a Fiat with a Mercedese?' That pretty much says it all for the hotel. But lobby, dining room are quite nice and the breakfast quite satisfactory. Service very warm and staff helpful.

Room Tip: Try for a sea-facing room at higher floor for a gorgeaous view

Dear Mr. "wineguyindia",

We are pleased with your comment. We will revise the signage used in the Spa area in order to improve the comunication with our guests. As for the use of the cap thats not the hotel legislation but the portuguese legislation aplied to all indoor swimming pools. We only "follow the rules".
We are happy with your comment and we expect to welcome you again soon.
The taxi driver opinion is as valid as any other opinion and we are very happy to have many good hotels in the Oporto area. The Yeatman is unquestionably one of the best in the world but the Fiat / Mercedes question seems a bit exaggerated.
We keep on doing our best as we do for the last 20 years always thinking in our guests.

Thank you so much for the comments

I was very suprised they called this a 5 star hotel as nothing was 5 star about it.

The pools were run down and dirty. The tiles on the hotel were missing from the grounds and need to be replaced.

Breakfast was very standard and not 5 star calibre. Rooms were outdated and old. TVs were ancient , about 10 years old id say.

needs a good scrub and clean up, as the pathway to the beacj was also dirty and walls needed a lick of paint.

I wouldnt stay here again and was disappointed but staff were nice so at least 1 plus.

They also need to clean the balcony windows, they were filthy

Dear Mr. Colin Morrissey,

We are aware that some changes are indeed essential for the wellbeing of our guest and therefore we are already planing some intervention on the main building (for the tiles issue) and also in the beach access area.
We will also renovate the TVs and some furniture as well.
So the Staff of the hotel will be more than happy to welcome you back again to testify the changes performed.

Your comments are very important for us as they help us improve our quality.

On first view this hotel looked fine, staff showed us our room and on a quick glimpse all looked good but once in we found the bedrooms were very uncomfortable, the pillows were very unsuitable and worn, towels were hard, no extractor fan in bathroom, new mattresses needed. Balcony doors/windows unclean.
The pool area, we found was rather bad and had areas roped off where tiles were falling from the walls. The showers around the pool were unclean and had algae growing, the entrance to the beach and boardwalk had looked like it had never been cleaned.

All of these things could and should be easily rectified and would bring it up to the 5 star rating that it is advertising itself at the moment.

On a better note if its just the spa you want then that is lovely, also we found the staff great.

My 2 day stay in this hotel was not a relaxing 5 star experience, more like a very expensive 3 star experience.

Room Tip: No tips to give regarding rooms, but most balconies are very small.

After four nights in Porto, my friend and I headed down to Espinho for one night before leaving Portugal. We took the train from S. Bento station. Espinho is a place where the locals go for swimming and sun bathing. We stayed at Hotel Solverde. The hotel is located between Espinho and Granja stations. You need to take a taxi to get there. The hotel interior seems outdated, but the staff was charming and friendly.
It was a much bigger hotel than the one in Porto. We selected a room facing to the ocean. The breeze was divine & cool although the sun was warm. The bathroom was large and bathrobes were provided.
After we enjoyed vinho verde with lunch, we headed to the beach. There is a walkway to the shore. At the shore, we rested and recuperated with late dinners and jet lag. There were no beach chairs or parasols. We just lied down on the beach with the towels provided by the hotel. The water was choppy & cold. The beach was rocky so this was not the place to swim. I saw people dipping entire body into the cold ocean. I was told that Portuguese people learned how to swim in cold water. You can walk to the beach area, taking a walkway. Lying down at the beach was so refreshing and relaxing. The sun feels good & warm and the breeze cools down our skin. We stayed there for a couple of hours but didn’t get any sunburn. We saw people harvesting muscles among the rocks.
The bar had a live entertainment and we enjoyed 60’s and 70’s music with complimentary Porto wine along with the other hotel guests.
We were informed that every Monday the town of Espinho has a morning market. I like visiting the local market because I can learn the way people live. We were very excited about the opportunity. The market opened at 8 and we took a taxi to get there. They sell fresh fish, meat & vegetables, household goods, and jewelry. I wanted to buy beautiful potteries but the carrying it to the US discouraged me. The market is a must visit place.
We stayed overnight in Espinho but it could be a day trip back to Porto. The hotel has shown us the shoreline of Portugal and its natural beauty.

Room Tip: Our room was #456. It had a great view.

We had a quick stay here with our parents while visiting family nearby. Although outdated everything was clean and well kept. The rooms are definitely updated and comfortable down to the white robes and chocolate on the pillow. The service was great, gym and spa were beautiful, the pool was very relaxing and overall calm and quiet. Incredible walk to Espinho along the ocean (which was too cold at the time to go in). Breakfast had a great selection and was always replenished and fresh. Dinner was just as amazing. Only complaint was not being able to stay longer.

The check-in was fast and efficient. The first look at the lounge gave directly the impression of the whole hotel -dated and tired. The room was ok but did not reach the 5-star rating. The good thing is that it was big enough and the balcony allowed you to have a view on the swimming pool and the sea. I think that for a 5-star you would expect that the cleaning would be on a top of their list but unfortunately, you can see the dust. Breakfast was fine but a bit boring after a week as it is always the same. Went once to the restaurant for dinner and it was disappointing as it was expensive and the food was really average for a 5-star hotel.
The staff were nice and helpful.
It is a shame that they do not spent more money maintaining the hotel (such as the tiles on the outside walls missing) as it will gain a lot as the location is lovely and the people in Espinho are really friendly and the food in the town is excellent.

Dear guest, I wish we could have done something to make you feel better during your stay. Unfortunately what you are describing is mostly due to the fact that the hotel was built in 1989.
We already renewed the rooms in 2007 and opened a brand new Spa in 2008.
We also expect to perform same new renovations in 2013 in the common areas.
As for the cleaning we will analize it as it is not very common the have that kind of reviews and that is one of our priorities.
Thank you for sharing your feedback with us, and we hope to one day see you again soon.
