“Great place to stay for vacation or business in the Porto region”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 8, 2012

The Solverde is fine place for both vacation and business. It’s a modern mid-rise hotel facing the magnificent stretch of beach that extends along the coast, south of Porto. The hotel has easy access to the beach and a handsome outdoor pool, sunbathing area and kids’ playground. There’s also an indoor pool. You’ll need a car or a taxi to get here, but the hotel and the nearby town of Espinho offer everything you need during a stay. It’s a 20 minute walk along a boardwalk into Espinho, which has a number of small restaurants and a nice shopping street. (Good gelato at the "Esquimo" facing the beach near the center of town.)

The hotel is a 30-40 minute drive from Porto’s airport, and there is good train service from Espinho into the center of Porto that takes about 20 minutes. Note that if you ask the hotel for a taxi back the airport, they will call for a very nice but rather expensive one. It cost 30 euros to get to the hotel from the airport in a normal taxi, but the ride back over the same route in the big Mercedes summoned by the hotel was 50 euros.

The room I had faced south, toward Espinho, but I could see the beach by peering around the corner. It was large and well appointed. The hotel offers free WiFi in the room and the bandwidth was fine for checking email and downloading a few files. I was there for a business meeting, and the meeting rooms were excellent, as was the food. There’s an excellent buffet breakfast. The service is outstanding. The first morning of my stay, I asked the waiter for hot water rather than coffee, and the second day, he brought it to the table as soon as we sat down. That afternoon I asked at the desk for directions to the beach and the person who checked me in 36 hours earlier greeted me by name.

All around, this is an excellent place to stay if you’re in the vicinity of Porto and don’t have to be in the city itself, or if you want a holiday on this part of the Portuguese coast.

Room Tip: As for a room with an ocean view, or a view toward Espinho, ideally on a high floor.

The hotel is well placed in a long beautiful beach, full of dunes and rocks. If you like long walkings you will enjoy for sure this beach. Said so, the hotel is rather isolated from other touristic facilities, about 2 km far from the beach promenade where most restaurants are (They offer fresh fish and lovely Portuguese cuisine). Therefore, you would definitively need a car. This will help you also to travel around, and visit the enchanting Porto monumental area. In such case, you must rememger that from September 2011 some motorways are under Electronic Toll Only control. You must check this with your car rental company before your travel.
The hotel is nice, with large rooms, and a very comfortable in-door swimming pool. The food at the restaurant is of very good quality and the service pleasant and helpful. However I think that the five stars rate is not adequate, as the hotel needs extensive refurbishing in the facade, accesses and gardens. Some items the the rooms were also faulty, for example the douche appliance was loose, and some slide doors did not run easily.

Room Tip: Get a car to rumble around, and enjoy good fresh fish!!

My wife and I have stayed at this hotel for the second time in three years, combining business and pleasure in each trip. Our choice was guided by looking for something close to Porto (20 min by car) but with recreational facilities. The hotel is close to the beach (to be reached through a tunnel under the railroad tracks) and has a very good spa section, including an indoor and an outdoor pool. Along the beach is a miles-long boardwalk which is popular among locals and rightly so. The staff is friendly and helpful, but English language capabilities are limited (the front desk being a laudabe exception). The breakfast buffet is extensive by Portugues standards, and for dinner the in-house restaurant serve very nice up-scale food. The hotel has two down-sides. Firstly, despite showing some improvements in the last three years, the overall hotel is still reflecting its original furniture from the 1970s in the public parts and could use some modernization. Next to the hotel the main train line between Porto and Lisbon is running, which can be quite noisy. When you close the double-glas windows and balcony door, it is not too bad but with windows open you will be awakened earlier in the morning than you would like.

I've stayed at this property twice now. I have to admit that I was confused about how quiet the hotel was both times I stayed. I realized that the Spa and Wellness Center were the big draws. I didn't use any of these facilities. What I enjoyed about this hotel was the peace and quiet it did offer. I was able to get a lot of work done during the evening. The bar and restaurant were very nice. The food was good. The rooms were spacious and clean. The internet worked very well. The view of the ocean was terrific and being able to leave the door to the balcony open so I could hear the ocean was great. I slept extremely well because of this! In my opinion this is not a business hotel but it suited me just fine. I will stay again.

We stayed her for three nights and enjoyed the experience. Our room was large, comfortable and clean with a balcony overlooking the pool and ocean.
All the staff reception, restaurant, spa and cleaning were fantastic and nothing was too much trouble.
The food in the restaurant was superb - the seafood buffet was a real treat and I think that my favourite dish was the steak in pepper sauce which was cooked at our table.
Nice indoor and outdoor pools with plenty of sun beds. The sauna and steam rooms are nicely appointed. Unfortunately we did not try any of the spa treatments on this occassion.
Very large car park and a garage if required.
Porto is only a short drive and the old town in particular is worth a visit.
We walked to Espinho town along the decking path adjacent to the beach - a very pleasant 30 minute stroll. Quite a choice of restaurants for lunch.
We would certainly consider returning.

The hotel needed some updating. The outside was very old and needs painting and the location is not good for beach gowing directly behind the hotel. There are some good restuarants and beaches just a short car ride away. The views are nice from the ocean front rooms, but it just does not have that resort feeling.

Room Tip: Ocean view for sure.

Wonderful hotel in northern Portugal with very good staff and absolutely beautiful food.

Spa facilities are excellent and also the gym and pool all with staff in attendance.
I spent five weeks staying there last year on business and the staff especially in the restaurant were very friendly and attentive and also good fun.

Superb menus available on a regular basis.
The Halloween special night was a truly spectacular evening which I thoroughly enjoyed.

Very near to Oporto which is a beautiful City and can be reached by train very easily.
Discounted meals and cabaret shows of a high standard are also available in nearby
Espinho a short taxi rtde away.
Would love to go back soon.
