On a recommendation I decided to do a wine tasting at Graham’s in the Vila Nova de Gaia area on the other side of the river. There are so many places that provide Port wine tasting it was great to feel that it was an excellent choice. They run tours every hour in several languages. It starts with a short video on the history of Graham’s which was very interesting and informative. Then a guide takes you down into the caves to share the history of the port wine making process. This was fascinating. We also saw the private collection (behind bars) and marveled at the various vintage ports. You choose a wine tasting sample at either Euro 5 per person or Euro 10 per person for 3 different samples. I choose the Euro 5.00 and was very pleased with the 3 different wines….all were excellent. Then the tour is finished and you can stay as long as you like enjoying the wine. Or you can choose to have a meal or tapas in their excellent restaurant. We took a taxi there as it is a little further away than the many that are located right on the river front. Taxis are very cheap in Portugal so that was not a problem and I do recommend it as it is uphill all the way. I then walked back down the hill to the river which was very pleasant. I would definitely recommend doing their wine tasting.

The have a bus that will pick you up in Porto and take you to the Grahams facility in Vila Nova de Gaia. The Port tour was very informative and they provided samples at the end of the tour. I did not know much about Port wines before the tour. Their facility is very nice and has a great view of Porto and the Duoro River. If you had only 1 port tour I would recommend this one (and take the bus!!)

Our visit to Graham’s was a very enjoyable experience. We took the free shuttle, a guided tour, and had lunch at the VINUM restaurant. As we had a hard time gathering information beforehand I put together some info and advice.

Shuttle
There’s a free shuttle which is poorly advertised. It is a very nice modern bus which goes from Porto to Vila Nova de Gaia all the way up to Cockburn’s and Graham’s once an hour. Walking there would probably be a pain but the shuttle ride was quick and comfortable. We got off the shuttle in Porto at the bus stop next to the Porto Bagle Café (Rua Nova da Alfandega 12) and we first got on a little ways across the street as we saw it driving by. It is supposed to leave Porto on the hour (I don’t know from and until when) and it leaves Graham’s every hour at 20 minutes before the full hour. The shuttle is also supposed to stop at every public bus stop in Vila Nova de Gaia if you signal that you want to get in.

Guided Tours
As there is little information about the tours on their website we contacted Graham’s per mail in advance. We did not get a reply so we decided to take our chance and just go up there. Even though we were the only two guests arriving at that time we were told that we could take a tour in 15 minutes. (The guided tours is offered in many languages, so booking in advance is probably still a good idea.)
As we were torn between the Old Tawny Tour and the Precious Ruby Tour (both tours cost 10 Euros) they advised us to book one tour each. The tours themselves are the same. They differ in the Ports you get to sample. So we could try 6 instead of 3 different kinds of Port. (There is also a Guided Tour for three Euros and a Vintage Tour for 30 Euros.)
The tour was informative, interesting, and our guide was very friendly and knowledgeable. It ended in the tasting room where our Ports were already prepared for us.

Lunch at the VINUM
We had a spontaneous lunch at the VINUM restaurant. They offered an Executive Menu for 25 Euros which was a 3-course menu (3 choices for every course) including a drink, bread, and olive oil. A White-Port-and-tonic cocktail as an aperitif was on the house. The food was delicious and the service attentive. Our table right at the glass front had a spectacular view across the river.

A little extra
They offer a Vintage Port of the Day for 10 Euros. And there is free wifi.

To sum it up: Graham’s is definitely worth a visit. Go there. Take the free shuttle. Share different tasting offers with your travel companions on the guided tour. Eat at the VINUM and ask to be seated with a view.

I have wanted to write this review so long time but finally today I am really writting.. we were visiting vila nova de gaia february 2012. We both are real port wine lovers so that was like one of our dream come true. We visited almost every port wine cellar at that area but I must say that Grahams was the best of them all. We had our tour guide Louis who seemed to enjoy telling us like an expert how port wine is made and what makes Graham's so special and tasty. He really gave much of attention for us and made sure we understood everything what he was saying. After the tour we both got three different port wines to taste. The view outside was really nice and we wouldn't have wanted to leave to our next tour but we have already bought tickets so we needed to. That is absolutely the best time we have spent with port wines.

This is a very pleasant place to visit with a light airy waiting area detailing the history of Graham's and the Symington family to start with. The tour starts with a film of the history of port production in vineyards up the Douro river and in Porto and then moves to the wine barrels, with a brief tutorial on the characteristics of port , how it is made, grape varieties and how diffferent ports are made. The tour finishes with a tasting and, of course, the option to buy Symington brand ports and other memorabilia at the shop
Nice area with lovely views of the bridge, river and downtown Porto. There is also a restraurant on site
