We did go to the Adega e Presuntaria I which is located very close : compared to the "II" version it has no terrace and is hidden in a road nearby without any charme. So you would ask why go there? First the menu is exactly the same, so it's not about the food. What we do love is that it is quite: only a few locals go there and the waiter is the most charming man in the world! He for sure knows his job and takes time for you.

As for food, you have a large choice of local dishes one better than the other: you feel like cooking is made by your grand mother :)

To drink, take the red Douro from house, worth every penny!

The place is absolutely wonderful, just close to river Douro and with the perfect view to the city of Porto and D Luis bridge (did you know that some of the the best views to Porto are obtained from Gaia, precisely where Presuntaria is located?). Depending on the hour and time of the year it might be wise to book in advance.

The place is well decorated (not this late modern fusion cuisine trendy places but like a very traditional, though contemporary restaurant) and you feel you will eat well just by entering.

The highlight of this restaurant is food: the octopus, "posta mirandesa" if you want to indulge in a good/ substantial piece of veal cooked in a northern Portugal way, boar... you will be pleased with the tastiness and looks and it is hard to miss or not to like something. To start with, the table is filled with many types of starters - a lot loke spanish "tapas" - all of them a compliment to your mouth: cheese, ham, sardines, mushrooms, beans... For resistents and gourmets, the main course follows with the octopus and the above mentioned primary dishes. Dessert is another rainbow of flavours, as you can pick a little bit of every dessert available in the buffet - in general very high quality desserts, not the "plastic", "pre-fabricated" things you may find in - unfortunately - many places nowadays.

Service is nice but not intrusive. People are normally responsive, available to advise and effective. For usual customers and repeaters the boss may seat a bit with you for a chat, but - again - he will not impose to you. What more can you expect ? Special dates in Gaia are to be avoided as crowds descend to all places near the river and service will reflect that.

A word of advise: some reviews claim about the price. It is true that this is not a cheap or economical restaurant. It is not, as well, a fast food chain. You need to come, take your time, enjoy the view, the food, the wine, and finish with a stroll on the river border. The price is balanced with all this. Should you want to stay a little more within budget, skip one of the options, either the "tapas" (starters) or the main course (if you like tapas like me, many times you will prefer this 2nd option rather than the 1st). You will find you will be pleased anyway. Should you have the time and the spirit, I reccomend - though - that you make the full "tour" and experience this nice eating place in Gaia

A place to go and come back

We did not read trip advisor before going here. It is hard to write a review because food was very tasty. We had the boar ad the octopus. But the fact that they put plates of appetisers at 10 Euro a plate on the table without telling you, makes me upset, and It annoys me so much that I cannot give them more. And we were there for lunch. We were lucky and asked for the price and te waiter took the plates away. Also, the restaurant it very expensive compared o the rest on the street. No dish bellow 10 Euro, and small portions.

We were in Porto/Vila Nova de Gaia for a week and had been accustomed to restaurants putting down bread and nibbles that were charged at a minimal cover charge (maybe 1-2euro) at the end of the meal but when a Japanese man who was at the table behind us alerted us to the fact that he and his 3 friends clocked up 100euro before even choosing a main meal due to these 'nibbles' we soon asked for our bill and realised we had clocked up 80euro in ten minutes and decided to leave in anger. To put this in context we ate most days, huge portions of excellent food with wine and water, coffee, desserts etc. plus a cover charge for 'nibbles' for circa 10-15euro per person so the fact this happened to us ruined our evening and is a real tourist trap. The waiter did say the nibbles will be charged but he refused to give us the menus/prices until after a table of 6 hungry tourists started eating these nibbles (bread, olives, serrano ham, and croquettes etc) so until we seen the prices it was too late.. plus we had been tipped off by the guy behind us. Imagine what the bill would have come to if we had ordered meals after that.. more hidden charges for a lettuce leaf garnish perhaps! Very underhand way of behaving and this restaurants lets down the rest of his fellow countrymen who are running excellent and honest establishments in the area. Avoid it at all costs unless you have no care for money and honesty.
