“Room for improvement ...”
Reviewed January 2, 2011

I have been at the hotel bar yesterday evening … just for some drinks with friends.

The location is awesome! But the experience turned down not as sweet …
- Inexistent door men - he was inside, not even close to the door (and we are talking of an entitled 5 stars hotel) … it was not clear where to park in the main entrance, neither I had anybody I could talk to! Nevertheless the hotel has a subterranean car park available for guests.
- Atmosphere - pretty new, too bright and lacking of warmth and welcome. It comes across as pretentious (staff was not particular welcoming or cheerful, traditional style but lacking of the right interior design touch)
- Service - almost lacking … waited 10min for being served! Only two other tables where busy and had already being served. The waiters pass through our table twice and did not even say a word!
- We order three classic cocktails (Dry Martini, Old Fashion, Tom Collins) … they were only able to provide a Dry Martini as they said they did not have the ingredients for the other two! A Tom Collins only takes gin, lemon juice, syrup and soda!
- Pricy … 10€/cocktail when the average cocktail price in the region is 6€ and they did not even offer any salty biscuits! It look like a bit stingy for a 5 star hotel.

When we left the hotel we definitely share the same idea … great location, tons of potential but needs improvement at least on the interior design and mainly on training their personnel.

The Yeatman is now fully up and running - I think early negative TripAdvisor comments during the soft launch are now irrelevant - although there is still some work to do on the gardens. We were very impressed. The views are really amazing, from the rooms, from your bath, from the pool, from the terraces. Comfort level extremely high, amazingly comfortable beds. I am an insomniac, but in the lovely Yeatman bed I had my best 3 consecutive nights for years. Inside the hotel there is a great feeling of spaciousness, calm and quiet (outside you can hear a buzz of traffic). Design is modern-classic, pastel colours and white, light, bright. Panoramic lifts have all-round photos inside of Douro vineyards or port lodges or Porto city. Cosy library. Staff were so helpful. Wine theming of decor is fun. Breakfast was delicious, dinner very good, modern style, maybe a bit over-complicated in places but very high gastronomic standard. Excellent wines. Delightful spa and pool. The position is great for the view, and for visiting the port lodges on the Gaia side of the river. We were ferried by bus, but you probably need to take a taxi to cross the bridges to Porto, or at least to the nearest metro station.

We stayed for our first night in Potugal. We couldn't fault the hotel, its decor, staff, breakfast room, views, our room, the framed antique maps on our floor's corridors, and the balcony (although the fabric chairs get wet with the dew).
Only one drawback is that it is difficult to find. Our first taxi driver refused to believe that the hotel existed, but thankfully I had printed off a map which he reluctantly accepted. The tip seems to be to ask the taxi driver to go to the nearby wine lodge - ?Taylors, and you will pass the hotel's entrance. Hopefully fprmal direction signs have now been affixed around the hotel.

The Yeatman has only been open for a few weeks and the design of the hotel indicates that an enormous amount of thought has gone into the design and no expense has been spared. Every room and public area has amazing views of Oporto. The hotel is in walking distance to the river and the old town. We enjoy walking and there were fantastic walks along the river.
The staff were all extremely helpful and eager to please. We ate in the restaurant several evenings and the food, wines and service were all outstanding. We are sure that this restaurant will soon gain an enviable reputation.
The Yeatman is a great location for a break away - there is plenty to do and see in Oporto and the hotel offers ultimate luxury at a very reasonable price.

This is a brand new 5* hotel with the most amazing views of the city and river. It's not complete and the Spa has yet to open, but already it surpases expectation. Impecably nice staff, modern rooms with all the toys and a chef that delights at every meal - this is a must for anyone who likes understated luxury. Enjoy!

Arrived Yeatman on Sunday 9/12, they had just begun accepting guests on 9/9. It is a gorgeous property with wonderful views across the Duoro to Porto - and Porto looked better from a distance than close up. Great setting for a vinho verde at sunset on the balcony before dinner. Beautiful room "the Dow's" with large well-appointed private patio. We enjoyed the wonderful infinity pool and the barkeep brought us requested "port tonic," great local cocktail. Lovely breakfasts, lovely service throughout. Internet worked upstairs but not in the room. Room was discounted well below what we booked, perhaps due to continuing construction. This hotel must have been built for the Port Trade, as we found Porto proper uninteresting - although we had a great dinner at Don Antonio there. Yeatman is walking distance (hills!) to the port houses' tasting rooms. Would be a great place for initial time before going to the Duoro wine growing area.

Don't understand the gripes here, this is a great new hotel in a truly spectacular location. The views across Oporto are outstanding, not least from the bar balcony or the infinity pool. The wine cellar is amazing. My room was extremely comfotable, quiet and luxurious. As it doesn't officially open for another few days, it's easy to pick away at little details that need ironing out, and service that is a little uncertain but sure these will come together and this will be a very important and impressive place to stay, especially for wine lovers.
