“#1 Hotel in Porto – A bit removed”
Reviewed November 27, 2013

We really loved this hotel. It is new, but old school. An interesting take on European elegance. A bit stuffy, but I kind of like that sometimes.

I would not eat dinner in the hotel. It was crazy expensive and not that good. The pool is beautiful, overlooking all the port warehouses and old Porto. There is an attendant to bring drinks or snacks. We ordered room service every morning instead of going to the buffet breakfast upstairs. We pulled the table out onto our private patio and enjoyed a quiet private breakfast overlooking the whole city. It was pretty magical.

The room was huge for European standards with a very comfortable bed and a large bathroom. In my opinion the best parts of the hotel are the spa (stunning) and drinks on the patio at sunset. Their bar patio is one of those places you could just stay forever.

The most important thing for urbanites is that this hotel is not really walk-able. The fastest way is to walk down the long cobbles roads to the sky tram that takes you to the top of the bridge, then walk across the bridge and then up another big hill into the main area of town. Not close.

Out front of the hotel is an extremely old olive tree that is worth a visit. A river tour of the bridges is a must to go see some of the ruins up river and big old houses.

Porto is beautiful but very eery. Lively and bustling by the river and up in the city, but then entire sections of town in between seemily deserted. Gorgeous pre-war apartments, boarded up.

Definitely bring comfortable walking shoes as all the streets are cobble and it’s a lot of up and down hills.

Room Tip: I am pretty sure all the rooms have the same private terrace and gorgeous unobstructed view.

Dear Niki B,
Thank you for taking the time to write in with everything you liked about The Yeatman. Our objective is always the comfort and enjoyment of our guests and it’s a priority to help make our guests feel welcome and at home, with the service they need to benefit from a true 5 star luxury stay with us. We were pleased to hear you liked the decoration as well as our breakfast, spacious terraces and luxurious Spa. We appreciate your comments about our location as it does take 5 minutes by car or taxi into town or a leisurely walk across into the old city, but the advantage of this is the space, gardens and views at The Yeatman. Another upside is our position in the historic Port Wine cellar district which means it’s very easy to visit several Port lodges which we know our guests appreciate. Porto itself is nestled on the banks of the river Douro and on both sides of the river, the roads can be steep to climb. With a visitors’ sightseeing bus, trams, cable car, taxi, metro and train all close by, there are several transport methods available and we always recommend comfortable shoes for visiting for this reason. Thank you again for your positive review and we do hope that we may have the pleasure of your stay with us again in the future.

The Yeatman is a true luxury hotel - a rarity in Portugal. Rooms are large, whimsically named, with large balconies facing the Douro river and with spectacular views of the Porto city. It is a true pleasure and indulgence to sit on the balcony and watch the activities on either side of the river. The sunsets left us speechless - that alone makes this place totally worth it!

Breakfast is served in the spacious restaurant with both indoor and outdoor seating. The offering is exactly the same everyday. We stayed for 4 days and very hoping some change but alas none. The staff is very friendly but inexperienced - if you order eggs be prepared to wait a long time. Coffee is horrible - choose tea or take some instant coffee with you.

The pool and spa services are great - do take the time to enjoy it.

Nearby wine houses - Taylor, sandman etc all offer wine tours - take advantage of that as well - do one - after that marginal value declines rapidly.

The location of the hotel is a challenge - there is no public transportation. Getting to the closest public transportation is a real hike - the climb up back to the hotel is not for the faint hearted. Make sure that you are fully healthy and have no issues before you book this hotel. While private transportation is an option it does not help you much since Porto is best accessed by public transportation. The joy of the city is walking in the narrow and undulating cobble stone streets. It seems a fairly easy thing to fix to add a shuttle service to Porto - the Yeatman should do that at the earliest to not mar the otherwise excellent experience.

Dear Wings_Wheels,
Thank you so much for you in-depth report about your stay which helps us see what our guests enjoyed and understand other areas which may not have been working to our usual high standard. For us there is no greater honour than to please our guests and make them feel special and at home. We apologise if some aspects did not meet all your requirements. We receive many compliments on the quality and variety of food and drinks available at breakfast, however, we would encourage our guests to let us know if there is anything they would like that is not provided. With regard to our location, to deliver some of the advantages we provide, such as the space and amazing views over Porto, the 2000 m2 spa and the 3,5 acres of gardens, it does mean that there is a 5 minute taxi ride away from the centre of Porto or a 20 minute leisurely walk into town. However, our location in the heart of the Port wine cellar district is also very handy for visiting the cellars and as you say, it is lovely to wander through the cobbled stone streets and discover the mystery and beauty of Porto. There is also a sightseeing hop-on, hop-off bus which stops very close by to The Yeatman and our staff are always happy and prepared to provide our guests with detailed sightseeing information as well as information about Portuguese wine, and The Yeatman itself. We know that our guests also understand this and appreciate the many qualities the hotel has to offer, as you indeed did, and we would like to thank you for equating our hotel with true luxury and an excellent experience. We do hope we may have the pleasure of your company with us again in the future.

The Yeatman Spa Hotel is a rare gem in Porto, Portugal. The hotel is elegant, built into the side of a mountain, with each room having its own spacious, secluded terrace.

After a long flight, we were welcomed, BY NAME, by Bruno who showed us to the reception area where we were invited to sit and check in, one-to-one.

The staff, one and all, are gracious, greet guests by name and are happy to share their love of Porto with you. Bruno at reception, Nuno, the front desk manager, Sergio at the door all suggest places around town for you, the guest, to enjoy. They are always respectful and welcoming.

The spa is 5-Star and more. Ms. Adelia Oliviera, the spa director, suggests treatments to suit individual needs and well being. Therapists Danielle and Marta are gentle, nurturing and respectful of their clients. You are greeted by wonderful people in a most relaxing and peaceful setting.

The hotel has, as its staff, people who love their city and are happy and eager to share this with their guests. After returning from a day of sightseeing, the staff greets you as if you are returning "family."

The Yeatman is located outside of city center but access to the city is made easy by a short taxi ride or, for the very fit, by walking or biking.

A beautiful location, city vista and wonderful people make this hotel a "Must See" and a "Must Return."

Room Tip: There are NO bad rooms. If you have difficulty walking, ask for a room near the lift.

Dear SpencertheSpy,
It was a pleasure to receive your positive feedback about our hotel, and to know that you enjoyed every aspect of your stay at The Yeatman. It is our aim to make our guests feel special and at home in a peaceful and relaxing setting. Indeed the whole hotel was built with this in mind, which is why there are so many elements and details that help contribute to the relaxation aspect. It is true that we would not be able to provide the views, space and gardens if we were right in the heart of the city, but even so we are only a very short distance away from the old town. We are of course, as close as can be to the Port wine cellars, being located in the heart of the Port Wine district of Vila Nova de Gaia. Thanks again for highlighting some of the best aspects of our hotel and above all, for us, it an honour to know that you left with the thought of returning which we certainly hope you will do one day. Best wishes.

Perhaps I was expecting too much from the people I met in Lisbon who raved about The Yeatman in Vila Nova de Gaia. But this hotel is largely about the View, and it is spectacular. I believe every room has one, as the hotel is like a horseshoe facing the old city of Porto across the beautiful Douro River. My own room was a football field away from the lobby. Room service is non-existent and the Michelin Star restaurant rather over blown, concentrating more on its degustation menu than its a la carte. After one meal, I preferred to eat by the river in Villa Nova de Gaia. The rooms are large with a sizable terrace and that remarkable view, but there was not one single drawer in the room itself, and I found the furnishings poor. The beds were just okay. The gardens of the hotel are extensive, and well worth exploring. As for the staff, they were friendly and well meaning, but clearly this is a training hotel. All members were young, and so I was told, barely paid. Still, it's one of those places you have to see. As far as the spa facilities go, I did not use them, and I stayed 2 nights, and that was enough.

Room Tip: All rooms have the view of Porto.

Dear JoeBaileyCole,
Thank you for taking the time to respond following your stay at The Yeatman. It is very important for us to receive feedback from our guests so we can evaluate what our guests think about us and pick up on any area that may not be running as well as it should. Our wine and gastronomy theme is very important to the experience and we try to present many different options for eating and drinking at The Yeatman, hence we put on Wine Dinners every Thursday featuring a different wine producer and a more informal Chef’s menu in Dick’s Bar. As you may know, our wine list has won several awards including Best of Award of Excellence 2012 and 2013 by Wine Spectator magazine, and just this week, we were awarded Best of Wine Tourism Award 2014, the international prize in accommodation out of 9 of the world’s greatest wine capitals. The hotel has been built making the most of the space and maximizing the view for all guests. Hence the rooms are spacious and spread out in order to make the most of the panoramic view over Porto and the river Douro. In some cases, this means that it can take a few minutes to walk to one’s room but it isn’t too far. We hope that our guests are happy with the upside to this, which is spacious and comfortable rooms each with its own private and spacious sun terrace. All rooms have drawers and the beds and linen were studied prior to ordering for comfort and softness. We have an extensive à la carte menu in the restaurant and we are sorry if you did not get time to sample it. Our staff are usually complimented. They are young, friendly and hardworking and a lot of training goes in to their preparation, including Wine School. We sincerely hope that we may have the pleasure of your company again at The Yeatman, in order to surpass your evaluation and experience next time.

This is a very nice hotel, though our experience didn’t quite live up to the superlative reviews on this site.

Pros:
- The view of the river and Porto from the rooms is a real jaw-dropper, one of the best I’ve ever had in a hotel room. The view extends to all the common areas.
- Another great feature was the wine tasting, included in our package. The bar sommelier did a nice job asking preferences upfront and then providing a lengthy narrative overview of his tailored selections.
- We had a minor health issue and the hotel staff did a great job quickly securing a local doctor.

Our visit had a number of issues, though, enough to not warrant that fifth star:
- You have that great view of Porto because you’re not actually in Porto, but rather across the river in Vila Nova de Gaia. It’s not a huge distance, and as many have said you can walk down a hill and cross a bridge and be in Porto in 20 minutes. But that walk takes you down some back paths amongst the port houses, and they get very quiet and isolated at night. That walk is fine in the daytime, but we did it once after 9 pm and it was deserted and a bit creepy. You ought to take a taxi at night. I think if we were to return we’d rather be in Porto itself; more direct access to restaurants, etc.
- The nice lady showing us our room the first evening didn’t turn on all the lights, keeping it a bit dark, which was odd. Once she left, we discovered there were bulbs out that needed replacing.
- When being shown our room, we also were not informed about wine available, and we were in fact surprised the room service menu didn’t mention wine at a wine-themed hotel. We were only told about the hotel’s wine journal belatedly, on the second day of our trip, after inquiring at the front desk.
- More than once, the front desk was a hive of nervous energy, the staff busily discussing some issue in hushed tones. You felt like you were intruding as you waited for someone to talk to.
- Service in the bar was slow and not that professional. We were accidentally charged for a 30E bottle of wine that was ordered by another party.
- There is no comfortable dinner option apart from the main, formal (and expensive) dining room. True, the bar serves a dinner menu, but they do so only on couches with low coffee tables – not a comfortable position to eat a plate of spaghetti. There are a few regular tables outside, but no heaters and it can be chilly out there.
- Room carpet needed replacing, or a good cleaning.

About that wine journal: What a great idea! This is a 30-or-so-page booklet, updated seasonally, that lists the currently available wines by the glass, each with a short paragraph description. The hotel clearly is putting thought and effort into showcasing a wide variety of Portuguese wines. I’ve not seen this level of attention given to a wine list at another hotel. One suggestion, however: add a summary table or better table of contents. As it is, you’re forced to read the whole document before deciding which wine fits your mood. If you want an Alentejo red, for instance, there might be a dozen of them scattered in different sections: one in “new finds,” a couple in “old favorites,” another in “small upcoming wineries.” You literally wouldn’t know these were all available without reading the whole document, or asking the bartender. I know it sounds like I’m quibbling, but some type of summary chart could help turn an already-impressive document into something much more user-friendly.

Dear denver_mg,
Thank you for your extensive review about your stay at The Yeatman. It is important for us to receive feedback to evaluate how we are responding to our guests’ needs. We are glad you liked the view and the wine aspect, from the wine tasting which was included in your package to the wine journal (our seasonal wine by the glass menu). Thank you for your comments about the wine journal, in which 82 wines by the glass are listed with descriptions. Our hotel has won several awards for wine service and Wine Spectator attributed The Yeatman as one of the most exciting wine lists in the world (Best of Award of Excellence, Wine Spectator, 2012 and 2013). We have indication of our in-room wine service in our mini-bar area in the bedroom as it is possible to order wine in your room, both from the Wine Journal (which can be found in your room), or from our Wine Book (our complete wine list), available on request. Since we are a luxury wine hotel, many details have gone into the concept and theme of wine. We are very sorry you had a problem with lighting in your bedroom which is quite unusual. Our Maintenance team are permanently in-house and it is easy to resolve such issues and the rooms are usually very carefully checked before being occupied. Please do let us know next time if there is anything which does not meet with your requirements as we would be delighted to help. We are a short walk into Porto, 20 minutes or so, and once down on the riverside quays, it is easy to get across into the old town. Due to our high position (hence the view), there is a fairly steep hill to walk down to get to the quays but in walking shoes it is easy and usually takes five to ten minutes. Going down is always easier than returning! Alternatively we recommend to our guests that they take a taxi for example on the way back. There is also a cable car system from the quays to the top part of the Dom Luis Bridge so there are various options for transport into Porto and taxis are inexpensive. Our location in the Port wine lodge district makes it easy to visit the Port wine cellars and we are fortunate to have lovely green spaces in our gardens, ensuring that the hotel is ideal for rest and relaxation. Apart from our Michelin star restaurant, we have informal dining in Dick’s Bar, where our guests usually enjoy the relaxed menu prepared by our Chef and his team, and comfortable sofas and views. There are many restaurants close to the hotel from Port wine lodges with restaurants to those on the quays and in Porto, and our staff are always on hand and willing to help with suggestions. Thank you again for your constructive criticism and we hope to have the pleasure of your stay with us again, where we hope to surpass your expectations next time.

We stayed at the Yeatman for three nights following a visit to France, Switzerland and Italy, on our way back to London. We took the detour to Porto especially to try the Yeatman, given the great reviews and a distant family connection to the Porto district. "We" is family of five, with one teenager, a six year old and a four year old.

Because of our family size we sought adjoining rooms, and the Yeatman was happy to accommodate us. The rooms themselves are large and well equipped. Each has a patio and a spectacular view of the old city. As a previous reviewer has said, you could sit and look at the view for hours.

Staff at the hotel were unbelieveably helpful and friendly, and were lovely to our children. Nothing was an inconvenience or too much trouble. The hotel has a children's play area which my little ones enjoyed.

Access to the old city is an easy walk, and we took a bus tour from just down the hill from the hotel that took in all the sights of Porto. A great way to get bearings! We walked a lot in Porto and were taken in with its charm.

On our first evening we asked hotel staff to recommend a nearby restaurant where we could get an authentic local meal. Restaurant Adega (just down the hill by the river) was recommended and it met our needs perfectly. The food was excellent, fresh and varied. The service friendly, welcoming and homely, and the price can only be described as "cheap" for what we had. A great recommendation.

One evening my wife and I had dinner at the hotel's highly awarded restaurant. It was spectacular meal. We were pampered with magnificent wine and food, and the service was very attentive and friendly, but very discrete. It was one of the best meals I have ever had.

The breakfast buffet at the hotel is worthy of comment. It both simple and sophisticated. It puts many other "5 star" buffets to shame (where else do they have quality Portugese sparkling and caviar on the breakfast buffet?).

When the time came to check out I was pleasantly surprised by the bill. The whole stay cost less than I had expected.

I strongly recommend this hotel for anyone looking for a quality stay at a fascinating location. They are doing it tough in Portugal right now, so if you can fit in a trip to the Yeatman, do it! Access to the airport is easy, and Porto has regular, inexpensive flights to many destinations in Europe and the UK.

My husband and I stayed here for a two night mini break.
Every care was taken by the staff to look after us, with none of the fawning or disdain that it sometimes encountered in luxury hotels.
Porto is very pretty. I would recommend a river cruise to fully appreciate the sights.
We had a memorable meal in the restaurant, where we thoroughly enjoyed the experience of the taster menu served by the skilful and attentive staff.
Other reviewers are right about the amazing view from all of the rooms.
I have never slept in such a comfortable bed.
A fabulous treat and you will leave feeling pampered and relaxed.
I wish I was there now!

Dear Pogwog,
Thank you for your highly appreciative comments about The Yeatman, including the care you received from our staff. We pride ourselves on making our guests feel comfortable and this for us is one of the most important factors. Porto is indeed a very pretty city, from its atmospheric streets and cafés, to the monuments and views, the UNESCO world heritage centre of Porto is authentic and charming. A river cruise is an enjoyable experience and helps one get a good perspective of the city, the architecture and the significance of the river Douro in the city’s history. Glad to hear you enjoyed our spacious, comfortable bedrooms and that you had a memorable meal in our restaurant. This is the other important factor for us: that people really enjoy the experience and get a lot out of their stay with us. Thank you for providing your description and please come back to visit us again soon!
