This has got to be one of the best hotels in Europe, I took my brother and his wife to the Yeatman as a wedding present and they were really really pleased with the gift.
The front desk service is second to none and all the staff have been so helpful, they also upgraded the newlyweds to a lovely suite, surprised them with a bottle of Port, flowers and a lovely bowl of fruit. It's my wife's birthday today and on our arrival back to our room there was also flowers for us and a bottle of bubbly.
The views from the room are magnificent and the rooms are to a very high standard.
Tonight we are going to try out their Michelin Star restaurant and a report I'm sure will follow.
Well done Hotel Yeatman and we will surely return.

Quite simply a wonderful hotel, with a fantastic team.

Service sometimes borders on the obsequious - I really can manage to carry just one plastic bag from the entrance doors to the lift without help and "Gourmet" in terms of the weekly Winde Dinner proved to mean nouvelle cuisine, with few or no carbs to soak up the alcohol and considerable stamina needed to cope with conversation in three languages on a shared table and then to wait until 11.50pm for dessert. However, these points and were a cause of amusement rather than indignation.

Spacious bedroom with a private balcony and clever bathroom shutters, enabling you to have a fabulous view across Porto whatever you might be doing! I challenge the previous reviews complaining about the cost - the Spring Break package was incredibly good value for the quality we experienced. The only inadequacy was the length of one of the bathrobes! Each room comes with 2 robes: one is man sized but the other presumes that Sir would only ever be accompanied by a lady under 5 feet 2 inches tall. Ask at reception for a larger version if you want to wander down to the Spa with slightly more coverage.

Right from the initial emails helping us to plan the trip in detail, to the personal interest of the hotel's Wine Director in our enjoyment of the wine list, via a memorable visit to the Caudalie Vinotherapie Spa, our stay was an absolute delight and The Yeatman is in a class of its own. Obrigada Silvia, Luis, Beatrice and all of the front of house team!

We spent a wonderful day driving up through the Douro Valley, courtesy of Antonio, who was booked by The Yeatman and comes highly recommended. It makes so much sense to be able to tour the vineyards before embarking on the Lodge visits back in Vila Nova de Gaia.

On that front, descriptions of the port-making process vary considerably and you might have to wait for a tour in a language to suit you so it's worth being prepared to spend time doing more than one tour. We toured Ferreira and Offley's but found the products for tasting uninspired and not of high quality. Our trip out to Quinta da Panascal in the Douro was much more rewarding in terms of both gaining an understanding of the processes and tasting better quality port. For the best port tasting, we would recommend Taylor's restaurant with its classic panorama of Porto and the Yeatman's excellent bar, though of course you get what you pay for....

Would also recommend a return trip on the Gaia Teleferico cable car, which was AMAZING.

We loved The Yeatman and hope to return, as soon as we can find another spare weekend and a babysitter......

Room Tip: All rooms have an unsurpassed view of Porto - ours was a Superior and we couldn't fault it.

Very nice hotel in a unique setting and excellent service. All rooms have a view to the Douro river and to the historic part of O Porto. It does not come cheap though. Nevertheless, highly recommended.

Overlooking Porto, the hotel is discreet by being cleverly designed over just 5 floors on low rise terraces. With just 80 or so rooms the whole proprety is spacious, roomy ,light and airy with stunning views of Porto and the Duoro from every point .Every room has an ample terrace and each is tastefully decorated, with wonderful marble bathrooms and large comfortable beds.
Staff are just greatl , so helpful and very friendly. Two pools ,one indoors and one infinity with Porto views and the biggest spa ever - over 2000 sq m !One of the best and most individual hotels I have stayed at.And ,of course ,they have a marvellous selection of wines and ports by the glass.Breakfast is splendid !
Could spend a very long time here !
Have just recieved a personal e-amil from Yenifer ,from guest relations ,thanking us for our stay .What great service

New, spacious and confortable rooms. The hotel architecture and decoration is terrific. Wonderful views of Porto city, at the other side of the river. Good service, although the breakfast could be a little bit better.

Stayed here back in October 2011 and going back again December 2012. Just wanted to back up all the really good reviews on here as they are very true. We predicted the Michelin Star for the restaurant when we there as the food is magnificent, especially more so when taken on the verandah overlooking the Douro and the view up the bank to the city. So very relaxing in every way. Someone described the beds as "a large marshmallow" very true and we absolutely felt really comfortable in it although that particular reviewer didn't, I suppose it is all a matter of what you prefer from your bed. The bath has been thoughtfully positioned in the room where there are a set of shutters that you can open from the bathroom and sit in the bath admiring the view across the river. If you get a chance to have one of the meals sponsored by different wine makers it is well worth doing but these are only once a month I think. The whole ambience of this hotel is simply wonderful.

We stayed at the Yateman for three days in late March 2012.

The Yatemen is a relatively newly built hotel (2010, I think) sitting on a hill above many of the port-wine lodges (warehouses). This makes it an excellent base for those wanting to wander through the narrow streets to visit the lodges for tours and tastings. The location is perfect for those most interested in the Vila Nova de Gaia side of the Douro river and there are wonderful views across the river looking onto the older parts of Porto city. The building is organized in step-backed levels, so each floor (public spaces and rooms) has ample terrace and balcony spaces. It's a low-rise development, sympathetic to the surrounding one-story lodges. The decor is "classical" and supposedly organized like a British gentlemans club, but I personally found it more "California-Spanish Revival" and bit too pretentious in the public areas.

Our room (003) was very nice. Very well decorated and appointed and had a nice large bathroom with heated marble floor and separate tub and shower. Like all the rooms, it had a fully glazed sliding door set that opened onto a large private terrace with table and chairs and had direct access onto the croquet lawn. Behind this was the wonderful view of the city. The room was stocked with books (English), which was a nice touch. For me, the bed was a bit too much on the marshmallow side.

We didn't use the spa facilities or outdoor pool. The hotel has a large library room that is an excellent place to go after dinner (in Porto's only Michelin-starred restaurant) to have a glass of port, smoke a cigar (yes, allowed in this room only), and leaf through a book.

The service is very friendly, if perhaps a little overly attentive. Upon check-in each guest will meet a "Stay-Manager" (or something like that), which was is really nothing more than an overly assertive concierge, and - for us - was a bit of a pest at times. We were constantly getting tangled up with her in the public areas when all we really wanted to do was either relax, or quickly get out the door. The people at the reception desks were just fine, so I think this position is a waste of effort....but, it is a job for someone, and she generally did it well.

Complaint:

My only real complaint is the access gate from the slightly hidden pedestrian path to/from the street that sets you off into the port lodge area. On returning to the hotel (uphill), we often found that no one answered the call-button to let us back on the grounds, requiring us to walk all the way back up to the top of the hill (Reception level) - which was MOST unwelcome after a full day of walking [there is hardly a single level surface in Porto]. On the last day we did finally manage to get in through this gate finally, but then it's a really squirrely route back into the main hotel area - though the parking garage, etc. if you want the elevator. This route isn't planned out very well, but as long as you get in the gate you'll save yourself the grief of walking all the way to the top.

Generally: I give the hotel high marks. I've stayed at many 5-star hotels in western Europe, and I'd give this one about 8.5 out 10. It was excellent value for a 5-star, very nice rooms, and generous breakfast choices. For the port-wine lover who wants to be based in Nova de Gaia, it probably is the very best you can do. If you're not interested in port, and more interested in the city of Porto itself, you'd probably be better off on the other side of the river as there isn't much going on in the Nova de Gaia area other than the wine lodges.
