“Wonderful hotel in Vila Nova de Gaia”
Reviewed April 17, 2012

New, spacious and confortable rooms. The hotel architecture and decoration is terrific. Wonderful views of Porto city, at the other side of the river. Good service, although the breakfast could be a little bit better.

Stayed here back in October 2011 and going back again December 2012. Just wanted to back up all the really good reviews on here as they are very true. We predicted the Michelin Star for the restaurant when we there as the food is magnificent, especially more so when taken on the verandah overlooking the Douro and the view up the bank to the city. So very relaxing in every way. Someone described the beds as "a large marshmallow" very true and we absolutely felt really comfortable in it although that particular reviewer didn't, I suppose it is all a matter of what you prefer from your bed. The bath has been thoughtfully positioned in the room where there are a set of shutters that you can open from the bathroom and sit in the bath admiring the view across the river. If you get a chance to have one of the meals sponsored by different wine makers it is well worth doing but these are only once a month I think. The whole ambience of this hotel is simply wonderful.

We stayed at the Yateman for three days in late March 2012.

The Yatemen is a relatively newly built hotel (2010, I think) sitting on a hill above many of the port-wine lodges (warehouses). This makes it an excellent base for those wanting to wander through the narrow streets to visit the lodges for tours and tastings. The location is perfect for those most interested in the Vila Nova de Gaia side of the Douro river and there are wonderful views across the river looking onto the older parts of Porto city. The building is organized in step-backed levels, so each floor (public spaces and rooms) has ample terrace and balcony spaces. It's a low-rise development, sympathetic to the surrounding one-story lodges. The decor is "classical" and supposedly organized like a British gentlemans club, but I personally found it more "California-Spanish Revival" and bit too pretentious in the public areas.

Our room (003) was very nice. Very well decorated and appointed and had a nice large bathroom with heated marble floor and separate tub and shower. Like all the rooms, it had a fully glazed sliding door set that opened onto a large private terrace with table and chairs and had direct access onto the croquet lawn. Behind this was the wonderful view of the city. The room was stocked with books (English), which was a nice touch. For me, the bed was a bit too much on the marshmallow side.

We didn't use the spa facilities or outdoor pool. The hotel has a large library room that is an excellent place to go after dinner (in Porto's only Michelin-starred restaurant) to have a glass of port, smoke a cigar (yes, allowed in this room only), and leaf through a book.

The service is very friendly, if perhaps a little overly attentive. Upon check-in each guest will meet a "Stay-Manager" (or something like that), which was is really nothing more than an overly assertive concierge, and - for us - was a bit of a pest at times. We were constantly getting tangled up with her in the public areas when all we really wanted to do was either relax, or quickly get out the door. The people at the reception desks were just fine, so I think this position is a waste of effort....but, it is a job for someone, and she generally did it well.

Complaint:

My only real complaint is the access gate from the slightly hidden pedestrian path to/from the street that sets you off into the port lodge area. On returning to the hotel (uphill), we often found that no one answered the call-button to let us back on the grounds, requiring us to walk all the way back up to the top of the hill (Reception level) - which was MOST unwelcome after a full day of walking [there is hardly a single level surface in Porto]. On the last day we did finally manage to get in through this gate finally, but then it's a really squirrely route back into the main hotel area - though the parking garage, etc. if you want the elevator. This route isn't planned out very well, but as long as you get in the gate you'll save yourself the grief of walking all the way to the top.

Generally: I give the hotel high marks. I've stayed at many 5-star hotels in western Europe, and I'd give this one about 8.5 out 10. It was excellent value for a 5-star, very nice rooms, and generous breakfast choices. For the port-wine lover who wants to be based in Nova de Gaia, it probably is the very best you can do. If you're not interested in port, and more interested in the city of Porto itself, you'd probably be better off on the other side of the river as there isn't much going on in the Nova de Gaia area other than the wine lodges.

This hotel is truly outstanding. Service is excellent without being snotty, rooms are amazingly well decorated, spacious and with the right level of luxury and comfort, there is a very nice restaurant (although expensive) and views from Porto are truly, truly breathtaking. It's located at Vila Nova de Gaia which is just across the river Douro from Porto and located close to Porto main attractions (just cross the bridge projected by Eiffel office) and in the middle of all Porto wine companies. By the way, if you are a wine enthusiast, wine or wine production is the main theme for this hotel. There is also a great spa using wine based treatments.
And the price is not so bad. We spent 130 euros / night and considering the quality of this hotel, was not a bad deal.

Room Tip: Views are great for all rooms. We stayed in the bottom floor were rooms are more spacious and there...

It has amazing vies to the city of Porto and were lucky to be there when the sun was shining. The hotel is very new and everything that you expect in a luxury hotel is available. Thought the bedroom, which was very large and airy, was rather oddly decorated and the curtains seemed skimpy and cheap compared to everything else. The Spa is outstanding and although the treatments seem expensive, I do think you get your money's worth in terms of time and expertise. Both the indoor and outdoor pools have spectacular views. The most disappointing aspect of this hotel is the restaurant, which was extremely expensive and had rather strange combinations of food and excessive amounts of amuse bouche (pretentious and bland). The staff were overzealous and kept taking plates away while other people at the table were still eating and also a half full glass of wine! They were also like this at breakfast and I found it very invasive and unrelaxing.

Room Tip: We had a superior room on the first floor, which had a great view.

I must say I like to be fair, my previous review I had a few remarks for a 5 star hotel and now I must say I was positively surprise when I return:
- The Door Man was at his place, park my car and pick it up with a smile (much appreciated)
- The service has been impeccable
- The cocktails and wine at the right temperature
- The view ... just divine

Well done! It has been a pleasure to come back ;)

The Yeatman Hotel not only embodies the definition of luxury, it manages to surpass it. On every level, the hotel actually exceeds the expectations of a five-star hotel. The unique architecture (the hotel is terraced on a hillside, itself like a vineyard) is open, spacious, grand, flooded with light and, above all, welcoming. And there are no words which do the view justice. One must simply sit (in the bar, in the infinity pool, in the spa rooms, in ones bathtub, in ones bed, on ones terrace...) and take in the view like a fantastic wine.
And speaking of wines... this hotel not only knows its wines, it lives them. Our compliments to the team of sommeliers and knowledgable staff. We made a concerted effort to try as many wines as possible during our three nights stay but I am afraid we had little impact on the cellar (which one can tour) of 25,000 bottles!
Ricardo Costa and his restaurant deserve every accolade of the Michelin star they were recently awarded. Book a table by the window, enjoy every brilliantly executed course of his suggested menu and experience an unforgettable evening of food, wine and service with the stunning view of Porto right outside.
The spa (Caudalie products -- very fitting to the vineyard theme of the hotel) was the most beautiful we have ever used in any hotel. Every treatment was consummately professional and, although we know there were other guests in the hotel, we felt like we had the whole place to ourselves!
Porto is a delightful destination and the hotel's location is a perfect base from which to explore the city. We were torn between wanting to enjoy our gorgeous and beautifully appointed room and actually leaving the hotel to do some great sight-seeing!
Finally, what impressed us the most was the warm and welcoming staff. All were impeccably attentive to detail, discrete, knowledgable, efficient and friendly. Other hotels ought to take training classes here...
If there were some way we could award The Yeatman with a sixth star, we would do so. The hotel and its staff made our weekend getaway (and my birthday) an unforgettable experience. We will savor the memory of our time there until we return again!

Room Tip: All the rooms are named after Portuguese vineyards and each has the stunning view of Porto and a lar...
