Description: Barão Fladgate Restaurant enjoys a spectacular location and atmospheric setting in the grounds of Taylor's Port cellars with magnificent views across the Douro River to the old historic centre of Porto. It offers a contemporary interpretation of traditional cuisine where the accent is on fresh local ingredients and on showcasing the authentic flavours of Portugal. The wine list features a wide variety of labels from the main Portuguese vineyard areas and, as would be expected, a comprehensive choice of both wood-aged and Vintage Ports. In summer, Barão Fladgate opens its al fresco terrace area where guests can enjoy a choice of light dishes while enjoying the spectacular panorama of the old city.

Really nice atmosphere and really nice restaurant. Food was good and the restaurant is nice. I encourage you to visit the cave at the same time.

“Barao de Fladgate, Porto, Portugal”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 12, 2012

After tour of Taylor Port, had lunch at the restaurant. Peacocks roaming in the garden while sipping port. Had codfish balls, mushroom risotto with chicken; tagliatelle with saffron, broccoli and almonds. Great respite. A bit of a climb but worth it.

“Great service .. and what a view”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 15, 2012

We reserved a table for the evening and were really impressed. The Maitre D gave us the very best table in the restaurant and we had superb views over Porto. The meal was superb if not a little experimental (Coconut and chilli ice cream as part of a savory dish!). Although it is pricey by Porto's standards, prices by English standards are pretty good. It is a climb up the hill to the restaurant - be prepared.

“Great food, great location, great service”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 15, 2012

We were fortunate enough to be in porto during restaurant week (the best restaurants offer 3 course meals for princely sum of 20 euros!) and had lunch at the Barao de Fladgate. Gazpacho, Cod and Belgian chocolate were superb...and we then squeezed in a Taylor's port tour on the same premises. Great combo. Thoroughly recommended.

“Was probably good ten years ago... time has passed it by.”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 29, 2012

Mediocre food and great views - but now that the Yeatman is open you could do much, much better. A nice meal at the Yeatman is better with better views (and a much higher price tag). A meal at the Yeatman bar is better with better views and a cheaper price tag (but more limited menu).

The menu touts awards from 2003 and 2006 and that's about right - I felt like it used to be "the" restaurant high up in the hill in Gaia and hasn't seen the need to improve since. The views are still quite good but they're better at the Graham's port lodge or the Yeatman and the food was really hit or miss. Some dishes were quite good, some downright bad and the experience in general left me feeling like one of those restaurants that your grandmother likes to go to because "back in the day" it was good but hasn't kept up with the times. Of all the many very good meals in a 10-day trip to Portugal, this stands out as the only disappointment and it didn't come cheap. Service was great - our server was clearly knowledgeable about the menu and didn't steer us wrong (but unfortunately we only asked his advice on half the dishes... and the half where we didn't were duds).

I might go back for a drink or a casual lunch on the terrace but not for dinner. That money's better spent elsewhere these days.

Dear GrintifiBar

We read your review posted recently and I regret that you did not have the experience regarding food that our clients have and that keep us being one of the most sucessfull restaurants in Porto-Gaia. Regarding prizes despite the fact that we have not been present in competitions, we received in 2011 and 2012 the certificate of Excellence by Trip Advisor being recognized as the 2nd best restaurant in Gaia (we were #2 in Porto when both cities were merged). However the best compliment we have is the number of guests and repeated ones that we have - not all of them old enough to be our grandmom. We do hope that you came again and allow us the opportunity to make you feel differently.
Yours truly - Ana Ferro - General Manager - Barão Fladgate & Três Séculos Events
