“Very Nice Hotel”
Reviewed April 11, 2012

Hotel is situated in the small town of Luso.
The Hotel is the bigest building in the small city, with a very impressive style.
Recently subject to refurbishment it offers all the modern comodities you can expect.
Rooms are modern and decorated with good taste, being quite spacious.
You have available a big indoor and outdoor pools.
Breakfast is good, but regular, in line with what you usually can find in a 4* hotel.
Surprisingly pool towels and robes are charged as an extra, something that should be corrected.
Do not miss the SPA. With fair prices if offers very good facilities and terapists.

Don't expect much movement in the Luso village (we're there in November), but you must expect a great place to relax, with all the amenities you could ask for. The hot springs nearby is a must see and do. The hotel is great, because the breakfast is quite good, the rooms are stylish, comfortable and big, the interior pool is very nice as well as the outside one, but we didn't go for it, because it was chilly :) The staff is friendly and professional. This is the perfect spot to stay if you wanna be in the center of Portugal and discover the Bussaco national Woods, which is just 5 stars where you travel back in time for some centuries, it's just a beautiful place, that we as Portuguese didn't know much about it. Just go and see it by yourself.

Room Tip: Ask for the 206.

I stayed at this hotel during my trip around Portugal and there are few things that must be mentioned. This hotel is excellent for medical treatment. Staff is well trained and really know how treatl with all equipment they have. Also they have a doctor, good indoor and 25m outdoor swiming pools, nice restaurant where we were served AMAZING portugese pork. Also there is a live music and smiling personnel who unfortunately do not speak English (other staff do not speak English too, except reception). Hotel is well located. If you will stay there, you definitely have to go for a walk to the nearest lake. There are a lot of cozy benches there under the trees and very soft grass. Rooms are very simple, free wi-fi access provided for only 1 hour.
So this is just good hotel and nothing more.

I have stayed at the Grande Hotel do Luso more than 15 times over the past 35 years and therefore can remember when the hotel was truly "grande". What always made for a wonderful stay was the exceptional staff. These days, while the staff is well trained, the hotel lacks the warmth it formerly enjoyed. The rooms have very recently been refurbished to reflect a minimalist zen look. While the hotel was in desperate need of renovation, the new decor leaves one cold. Breakfast was more than adequate with a decent variety of buffet choices. The town of Luso is quaint and nearby to Busaco, which is a national treasure not to be missed. Also not to be missed is the roasted suckling pig in the town of Mealhada - just minutes away from the hotel, where one can find literally a hundred restaurants specializing in the delicacy. All in all, I would recommend the hotel based upon its' location, cleanliness, and decent rates. Tip: for the best rate, book online at the hotel's website.

The small town is great with lots of fresh air and a lovely park. The hotel is really well decorated. However, it lacks some basics for a 4star hotel. It doesn´t have room-service or mini bar. The food at the restaurant is just ok, not bad but not great also. The best part was the piano concert during dinner..so relaxing and romantic!

I loved the experience but I don't know if I would come back because it is too expensive for what it offers.

A very nicely built grand hotel from the 40's.Unfortunately, the interior has been very badly restored and the decoration is uninteresting.
Rooms are on small side, but adequate.Staff is very polite.Management could be more...actual.
Breakfast not good, a shame even for a 3 star.Didn't tried the restaurant. The pool is very good, olympic size.Pity the water temperature at around 19C.Good for a weekend,in my opinion.

I was with my wife for a convention in the hotel on October 2006.

The hotel's central location, nice breakfast, good range of services (from an outstanding pool to tennis courts) and refurbished bathrooms are the aspects that make this old hotel worth a visit.

However, they should upgrade the service and the rooms could use some treatment as well. The auditorium was really not good at all for its purposes, since the chairs are not confortable to stay there for more than a few minutes.

All together, you must consider it is always hard to invest in a hotel when you do not really know how the future will be, since they used to sell themselves because of the thermal waters nearby and now you can find spas everywhere!
