Beautiful, surrounded by Nature, with amazing ornamented facades. We didn't stay at the hotel, but it's worth to see and photograph, on the outside. The gardens, the chapel and all the surrounding are amazing.

My husband and I stayed here in April and it was a wonderful experience. When we got there we were informed that they were overbooked and they had to change our room. We were a little concerned but, what a surprise. They had upgraded us to the King's Suite, 5 rooms and a private deck. Perfect! We had a wonderful meal and the Palace is a place we will return. The grounds and trails were beautiful, the architecture of the building is outstanding and we were overwhelmed by the beauty of Bussaco. The staff, I can't say more were wonderful and directed us to hiking trails on the grounds which we enjoyed. If you want a beautiful, quiet place to relax with hiking trails this is the place.

An international group of 12 of us stayed our first night of our wine tasting holiday in this wonderful old building. Architectural details abounded inside and out and the building is surrounded by pretty gardens and several short walking trails. Within the grounds there is an unusual little chapel - the Convent of the Holy Cross - with walls bedecked with cork. The room didn't live up to the promise of the exterior of the palace but was perfectly acceptable - 2 beds, ironed sheets (love those!), only one bedside lamp (inconvenient for two readers), 2 armchairs (a plus), bathroom with tub with shower over, bidet but poor lighting at the sink (minus for men wanting to shave). The breakfast was excellent with very good scrambled eggs (which many hotels in Europe fail to produce) and a big selection of breads and rolls, served in a beautiful dining room. We were very pleased with our visit.

The location it's excellent, beautiful Palace and gardens.
There is a Convent built by the monks who also take care of the exotic garden with rare trees and plants brought by the earliest Portuguese during colonial explorations.
The restaurant was an amazing surprise, excellent service and food with exclusive wines from Bussaco.

On the other side, there is no AC in the entire Hotel and the furniture it's not always that good.

We stayed here for a night in late June, nothing prepared us for the beauty of the building, it's Manueline carvings and wonderful windows. We expected it to be very nice but even we as seasoned travellers were taken aback. I suspect for some people the old fashioned almost utilitarian 1950s style interiors of the bedrooms will be a let down, and if truth be known they do need seriously updating. However it was interesting, the beds were comfortable the bathrooms good and the size of the rooms were great. We enjoyed the restaurant very much and the lovely outdoor terrace of the dining room, the food was very good if perhaps a tad expensive. Te grounds are lovely and we had really good service. We will go back probably in the winter to see a different aspect, as in June it was very hot. The views from the Coimbra gate are worth the short walk.

Room Tip: Go for the largest room you can, north facing so its cooler in the afternoon.

Visited this establishment on the 14th July. The website advertised the following “ Enjoy seasonal dining on the large outdoor terrace overlooking the breathtaking gardens and woodland. This terrace provides an intimate and romantic setting where guests can enjoy exquisite traditional cuisine. The Lobby Bar in The Palace Hotel do Bussaco provides the perfect setting for afternoon tea, pre or post dinner cocktails or simply to taste a rare Bussaco wine or a vintage Port. “

So a party of seven of us decided we would go for afternoon tea. A booking was made and we duly arrived at 16.00 hrs. We were met with a look of slight bewilderment as we had booked to be on the terrace which we were now informed was for clients of the restaurant, however we could sit on the side terrace which we gladly accepted. On asking for the afternoon tea menu we were advised that this did not exist and we were given a menu which in the main was a wine list/drinks menu with the last page listing various snacks, sandwiches and pastries.

On ordering smoked salmon sandwiches we were told this was not available, we then ordered, smoked ham, cheese, mixed meat, club, followed by a selection of pastries. After quite a wait the sandwiches duly arrived, being a five star hotel we expected the sandwiches to be cut daintily, in fact they were huge, approx 5cm thick and just cut in half (a couple of photographs illustrates this), the bread was about 4.8cm with the fillings about 2 mm. The pastries that followed were equally as bad, totally dry, obviously at least a few days old. The service was certainly not five star. Altogether a disappointing experience and vastly overpriced for the items we had ordered. The hotel trades solely on its history and position and not on its product and service.

A unique experience !! The hotel is amazing - extravagant Manueline style architecture in a beautiful setting of formal gardens and forest. The interiors are stunning - a Hollywood filmset designed by Pugin's Portugese cousin !! We stayed just one night in a huge room (we were assured it was once occupied by Agatha Christie (?)) which appeared not to have been touched since the 1930s, apart from the addition of the substantial Grundig TV. Only the energy-saving light bulbs in the chandelier looked slightly out of place and the lumpy old pillows definitely need replacing.
Yes it's true, there is some peeling paint and dodgey plumbing and heaven knows how they got that lift passed by the Health and Safety boys, but you really have to look beyond all that. The Bussaco Palace is a time capsule moment in history - basking in that period of opulence, style and extravagance when Europe still enjoyed all the wealth of it's colonies. History doesn't come with the latest mod-cons and free Wi-Fi. If you want Hilton style 5 star you need to book the Hilton.
The excellent evening meal, served by a host of attentive staff in the fabulous dining room was, of course, pretty expensive with a wine list to make your eyes water, but if you feel like pushing the boat out I can't think of a better place. Breakfast, served in the same room is good though no exceptional.
The only distraction from this truly memorable experience is the overbearing presence of people who are not hotel guests, but who have paid to visit the grounds and garden. Coach parties invade the hotel lounge to enjoy refreshments while others peer intrusively through windows. I think the management need to think a lot more about the privacy of the hotel guests.
