Owner description: Over-looking the bay of Machico lies the Santo da Serra Golf Club. Its original course, built in 1937, was redesigned in 1991 by the famous golf architect Robert Trent Jones who created a spectacular 27 hole golf course in one of the most beautiful landscapes that nature may offer. The MACHICO and the DESERTAS courses are the ones usually played on the Madeira Island Open, while the SERRAS course, though slightly plain, maintains the same game level.

This has to be one of the most challenging golf courses I have ever played and as a high handicapper I really struggled on the uphill lies. However, deciding not to be beaten I booked a lesson with the resident pro, Dara. Within minutes he'd identified by bad habits (far too many to mention) and started on working on correcting my swing and grip. The lesson was constuctive with Dara offering both excellent tutition and support throughout the session, and I went away feeling far more positive about my game and much more determined about working on both my swing and grip.

Enjoyed Santa da Serra with it's wonderful views and layout.
Very difficult course to walk-would have a buggy next time.
The clubhouse is good and practice area excellent.
The par 3 4th on the Machico course is spectacular
Will enjoy seeing it on Sky if they have the coverage this year

Beautiful Breakfast Buffet and very sophisticated dinners...
the only regret was there really is not a big lunch option...and not much in the neighborhood if you have a day of hanging around and lounging... otherwise the service was fantastic, great staff and beautifully presented and prepared cuisine.

Challenging course, spectacular scenery, the greens were a bit patchy due to the recent weather (drought then rain) but would definitely recommend playing this course, if only for the views. We booked through our hotel and the course pick you up. For this standard of course the green fees are quite reasonable. We had a buggy for 2 separate rounds but there were many people walking the course, which must have been great exercise for them!! The club house has a high standard of facilities and was very clean and the staff very friendly and helpful.

This has to be one of the (the?) most spectacularly scenic courses you can play for anything like 'sensible' money. It wasn't in perfect condition in December (after a long drought in the summer and very heavy rains in Oct/Nov) but who cares!!! Its a great place to play, the staff are wonderful and I'd always recommend visting.
