“Island of greenery and scenery!”
Reviewed July 27, 2011

The Dom Pedro Baia is an all-inclusive hotel but has none of the mass marketing feel about it. Guests were chilled out and relaxed, polite and friendly - and no one seemed to mind the large parties of French who wanted to re-arrange the dining room every meal time! The staff took it all in good humour and were always courteous and friendly, efficiently serving the complimentary drinks at the poolside bar and restaurant.
We went at a fairly quiet time before the school holidays but were warned things livened up with the children arriving a week later!
The room was lovely. We were allocated a suite on the 8th floor and nothing was too much for the male receptionist who hastily helped us convert the double bed into two comfy single ones. We could have done with an air conditioning system that filtered through to the sleeping area instead of just the sitting area and had to open our window as wide as it would go - a bit daunting on the 8th floor with no balcony or safety bars! But as two adults we realised the dangers! The room was cleaned daily and well.
The food was fairly varied with a good selection of salads and desserts but pork seemed to be the flavour of the month! Nevertheless, there was always something to appeal to all palates.
Pluses of the hotel included relaxing with a coffee by the pool, an adult environment, well-run restaurant and some lovely sitting areas including one with a selection of donated books and magazines.
The 'meet and greet' rep was friendly, helpful and informative - though even she could not get us tea and coffee-making facilities in our room!
The town is literally a few minutes away and provides a nice alternative to eating at the hotel if you want a change (but no doubt if all inclusive you wouldn't want to do this!) and some interesting shops. It appears that trade is not good on Madeira at the moment so there were many sales going on.
There are a variety of tours and we went on the one to the capital of Funchal, taking in the botantical gardens, a lace-making factory and the flower and vegetable market. This might sound like a bit of an old ladies tour but it did give us the chance to glimpse Funchal. However, I would strongly recommend hiring a car and touring the island independantly - it is an island of greenery and scenery and I feel it appeals very much to the independant, discerning adult traveller. Like nearly all holiday destinations, it is worth checking out how much a taxi driver will charge for a day's outing as this can be cheaper than an organised tour.
Transfer from the airport was super quick and efficient as we were just down the road!
it was a perfect, undemanding week and we were dismayed to learn that a second holiday departure date there was cancelled because of low numbers. The flights were from Manston in Kent, our local airport which is why we chose that route. But had we booked the week after, June 20th, there would have been no holiday. This is a great shame for companies like Atlanic Holidays who are trying to boost use of Manston for all of us in this corner of England!

Room Tip: Ask for an upgrade or suite as our initial room was quite cramped

Well, where to start... If you want to do this quick just don't stay there!! It rates it self as a 4* Hotel, well, it isn't. When I read these reviews, sometimes I think that these opinions are all relevant to what people are use to. So I wonder if places really are as bad or as good as people make it sound and how mutch notice to take of it. Just for the record I am from a working middleclass backgroung, not really able to afford the best luxuries in life but like some of lifes conforts and would expect to find some of them in most 4* hotels. This was not the case with Don Pedro. On approach, the outside looked tiered and I'm affraid this was the same throughout. The interior is very dated, 1980's is probably being kind, the rooms are extreamley basic with old linen and crusty, hard on the skin towels. The bathrooms are of the same condition and although everything worked fine, including the bidei, it's just old and plain. There was an unpleasant damp, musty smell in the room and by the games room that was very unpleasant and persitant. The restaurant is very canteen like with the same old feel to it. Food did not impress at all!!! It was very bland and always the same apart from the food in the 2 hot trays on the right hand side where they served a different type of meet of fish every day. Having said that it was as bland as the rest of it. The entertaiment was no better. Guests fell asleep as it was so boring. With regards the staff, ther were some good ones and some not so good. The reception staff were always very helpfull and keen. The rooms were cleaned very day and the crisp towells replace so I have no complaints about the staff who did this. In the restaurant I felf a few times like I was not welcome and rushed through my meal. Not many smiles and interaction. Plates were cleared very fast but was this efficiency or a way of saying ' hurry up, the sooner you're done the sooner I can do my job and get out of here' ? Now for the pools... there is one very small paddling pool, suitable for a 1 ot 2 year old child. The other pool is 160 meters deep at the shallow end and 190 meters on the deep end. Not sure what children who are between the ages of 3 and 12ish who perhaps can't swim that well are supposed to do??? In the games room there is 1 table tenis table (you can ask at reception and play for free as long as no one else is on it), one snooker table (they charge to use this one), outside there is a tenis and voleyball court s (not sure if need to pay to use it).... I could go on but I'm sure you're getting bored of reading. Madeira is a lovelly place and if you go there rent yourself a car for at least some your stay and just go and explore. Look for a hotel further West of the Island where you will be more central and the weather will be mutch nicer (Machico is a bit unsettled). If any of the Managers of Don Pedro are reading this, hope you can use it in a constructive way as you may find that a lot of your customers will not revisit if they have the same experiences as I did.
Happy Holls

Please visit to make your own opinion! We were a bit apprehensive with some of the reviews that we read beforehand, but thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The room was spotless, clean pillowcases every night, sheets & towels changed as often as you requested and falling asleep to the sound of the sea suited us fine! The staff couldn't be more helpful and we couldn't fault our holiday.
Perhaps if you are looking for 5 star on a 4 star budget then you may be disappointed - but believe me, I've stayed in much worse for twice the price!

Room Tip: Try the restaurant opposite Hotel, a little gem!

Recently arrived back from the Dom Pedro in Machico on 14th Feb 11. I cannot fault the hotel for food, cleanliness and service througout, nothing was too much rouble. The 'all-inclusive' bar service was extended also into the restaurant. Ok, the weather is not at it's best at this end of te island but there was a good bus service to travel the island. The holiday was made all the better for the great company we met at the hotel.

Found the room confortable for this old-fashioned hotel.
Bathroom was very basic but very cleaned.
Buffet breakfast is ok and we also enjoyed very much their lunch and dinner, both buffet.
Althought, It is not worthy a 4 stars anymore, we spent a relaxing time at this hotel.

First time to this Hotel & Madeira. We were moved here from the Dom Pedro Garajau by our Travel agent because they told us that Dom Pedro Garajau no longer don AI.
After reading some of the reviews we wondered what we were going too. Anyway I will try & give our honest review.
A short drive from the airport in a taxi & the first views from the motorway it looks tired. A repaint in a brighter would help. As you arrive at the hotel it is undercover & dark (good on a hot sunny day but not at dusk or raining). The entrance to the reception not very inviting. When in reception the staff could not have been more helpful. Booking in was quick & efficient. My wife became ill on the flight & asked to see a Doctor at the hotel. The reception said we can call you a doctor but he would charge 150 euros but if we got short taxi ride to the local hospital it would be free with the E111. As it turned out this was to become a good thing. The taxi driver who took us spoke very good English & not only took to the hospital but waited for us & found an open pharmacy to get the medication from. He was so helpful that when we talked about trips he came up with some very good prices. In fact we done a one day trip around Madeira with him covering more then you do on a 2 day coach trip costing less the two coach trips.
Any way back to the Hotel. They say the hotel was refurbished in 2004 only 8 years but it looked dated. The room we had was a nice size with a good bed a good bathroom & a view of the town & sea. The room was very clean. Nit picking a coat of paint where the cases scrape against the wall & tiding up the sealant & grout around the bath would have made it look better.
The bar was good along with the staff but you do have to sign even on AI. The entertainment we had was also good. The restaurant it self was clean & the staff friendly & although we did meet several people who loved the food we did not.
You won’t go hungry but we found it boring & tasteless. There are plenty of restaurants near by. We are both fussy about our food so although we will go AI it is not uncommon for us to eat elsewhere as it is only the drink etc we want at the hotel.

Rooms kept nice and clean but no air-con which didn't bother us as it was winter. Plenty of hot water. Food was excellent although hot breakfast didn't have much of variety it was good quality great fresh bread and fruit. Dinner was very good with plenty of fish meat and fresh salad lots of very naughty cakes. We didn't stay in the hotel at night preferring a stroll after dinner along the promenade and town.
Transport was very good once we found the bus stops and timetable, very interesting rides around mountain roads but good fun and reasonably priced. Price one way to Funchal 2.85 euros there are no returns.
