When one has lived quite a bit of time in San Diego, their palate for Mexican food becomes somewhat “pillowed” if you will. This was more than evident as we visited the Oro Azteca in Norfolk. The food here was by no means terrible or even poor by and standards but it just lacked that flare of South of the Border that we are so used to.
The chips and salsa were accompanied by a white queso that when combined all together did make for an interesting and new taste. Just a light application of the queso will more than do the trick however so be cautious there. Another good aspect was that my XX was cold any my wife’s margarita was strong. This always helps with digestion.
I ordered the Mole Ranchero as there was no basic mole on the menu. Mine was good enough but lacked the sweet tang that should accompany such a dish. My wife ordered the beef enchilada plate and it was as equally ordinary. To describe it exactly would be to say that taking a bite resulted in an immediate taste of cooked hamburger that was slowly followed up by a mild taste of spice.
We were not too disappointed however as we knew our palates had been somewhat spoiled. We left filled and a bit buzzed as we walked back to our hotel. Next stop? Bahrain! Stay tuned. We can’t wait to share our adventures.
See you out one the trail and remember, don’t be one of “those.”
