My husband stayed in this hotel from a Sunday to Friday for a business trip. The hotel was convenient to tourist attractions, restaurants, the ball park and shopping. However, the company that hosted the trip offered shuttle service to the location of the meetings since that was outside of the city. The hotel offered parking.

  • Liked — The Courtyard consistency in amenities and cleanliness.
  • Disliked — Size of room - the room could have been larger.

I chose the Courtyard instead of the nearby Sheraton because of Marriott rewards.

The Courtyard rooms are standard in size and have all the standard amenities, so it's OK - just OK. It was close to the water, but not RIGHT ON the water like the Sheraton. The on-site dining was sub-par. The view is of other buildings. It was noisy. The windows were secured shut, but not well enough as they could be partly removed from the inside. My carpet was shampood one day while I was there, and I had to wear shoes
for the next two days to keep from soaking my socks! Ugh.

The desk staff and the valet parking attendants were very nice and timely. The wake-up calls were on time, and the car was brought around very quickly. The internet service was free and fast, but suffered short disconnections a few times a day.

The people in the room next door (which had an adjoining door) started smoking one night. I called down to the desk, and I heard someone come up to talk to them within a few minutes. Good job!

Next time, I'll choose the Sheraton, even though they charge for internet connection.

Had 2 rooms on a recent Saturday night. Both rooms were nice with excellent bedding on king-size beds. Front desk staff was very friendly and efficient. Sunday morning buffet was reasonably priced at $8.95 but was mixed as to quality (e.g. bacon was fantastic while the eggs were terrible). Service staff in the buffet area were excellent.

My only complaint about the hotel was that the indoor pool is only heated to 71 degrees. (As a reference point - compare to Disney which claims to heat its pools to 82 degrees). Seventy-one is much too cold for comfortable swimming. We were looking forward to having our kids swim but the cold temperatures made them shiver within minutes.

If you're looking for a hotel where your kids can swim, this is not the hotel for you. If you don't care about the pool, then this is a great hotel with a good location: walking distance to Nauticus, a mall with restaurants and the ferry to Portsmouth.

  • Disliked — Indoor pool was too cold.

The Courtyard was a nice and comfortable hotel. It was very busy with leisure travelers and a college sports team, but it wasn't overwhelming and crowded. The lobby was very nice and had tables for playing cards or just relaxing in the lobby. The front desk staff was helpful. The room was quite large although even-numbered lower floors have the wonderful view of the hotel's power plant. Otherwise, I was very pleased with the room and the hotel overall. It is only 4 blocks to Norfolk Waterside, Nauticus and the McArthur Center (shopping complex). However, be aware that the hotel only offers valet parking at $15 per day. There is some metered street parking (free after 6pm), but on a Saturday night don't expect to find any due to patrons of downtown nightspots.

We were in town for a wedding and stayed here at the suggestion of the bride and groom. It was slightly more expensive than we were hoping for, but we had a great experience. My husband claims that the bed/mattress/pillows was the most comfortable he'd ever slept in. The front desk attendant was very knowledgeable about the area and directed us to try a restaurant that turned out to be amazing (don't remember the name of it, but it was Cuban). The only thing I didn't care for was the breakfast, which was included in our room rate. Oh, and we were able to find parking spots on the street most of the time... we only valet parked once the whole weekend.

  • Disliked — Breakfast, valet parking.

I travel frequently for business but had to come to Norfolk for some family matters. I chose the Courtyard because I still had to work when I was here, and in general I've had good experiences with them while travelling. I would certainly not consider this up to par for a Mariott.

When we arrived from the airport at mightnight and pulled up to the valet, we had to finally go in and ask the front desk staff if there was a valet. No one was waiting and we were the only car there. We waited over 10 minutes and actually had to go inside and ask the front desk 3 times if the valet was coming before the valet to finally come out. He had been sitting in the bar watching TV and talking on his cell phone. When my wife asked for help with her luggage he actually said "Oh, you can carry that yourself". Not a good first impression.

The rooms are average, but the beds are very soft. If you have back problems (as I do), you will probably not be comfortable. There is free shampoo and other toilertries provided, but I get those at a Days Inn too. The first day we were here when they cleaned our room, I actually couldn't tell until my wife pointed out the beds were made.

The only real highlight with the staff was the weekday bartender who will pour you a scotch big enough to make you forget about nearly everything else in the hotel.

The hotel is in a good location. It's about a 1/2 mile walk to the waterside, and there's a fair amount of stuff to see down there including the battleship USS Wisconson (admissin is free). There are also some decent chain restaurants for a meal. All and all, I wish I had just spend the extra money and stayed at the Sheraton.

This is a slightly better than average Courtyard. And there really is nothing wrong with this hotel. It's just that there are better choices in the area.
The good: The rooms are a little bigger than your average Courtyard. Everything was clean. The lobby was very nice.
The bad: While the rate might seem good, the valet parking costs almost $20 a night. The staff was non-attentive and, in some cases, just plain rude. Special requests, no matter how minor or important, were ignored. And when questioned about a specific request, the employee/manager answers were creative, yet unbelievable. (Foam pillows were not in the room, despite written requests, a phone call, and numerous notices on my Marriott Platinum profile. C'mon. When nobody takes responsibility for what went wrong, it is obvious nobody took responsibility to make it happen in the first place.) The outdoor lighting is obnoxiously high-voltage and comes into the room even with all the blinds pulled.
Bottom line: The Marriott across the street is a great hotel. The Hilton at Virginia Beach is new and beautiful and about the same rate as the Courtyard. And the parking is cheaper. Same for the Sheraton.

  • Liked — The room was good.
  • Disliked — The service, the expensive parking, the feeling I could have done better in my hotel choice.
  • Tips/Secrets — Stay at the Marriott, or in one of the nice hotels on Virginia Beach.
