“small, quaint atmosphere; big flavor”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 26, 2013

Wow! Were visiting for our grandson's 1st Xmas. Found Razzo and will return. Arrived at 5 for opening with no resos. Seated quickly and were informed that glasses of wine were half price until 6:30 ( happy hour). House chianti was delicious. The apps: baked fennel and the clams will be difficult not to order again. My wife and I planned to share but only a taste was given of each. The entrees: chicken marsala ( my wife makes as good as i have eaten and she said this might have been the best she's ever eaten). Me, veal picatta was very tasty. The homemade pasta with the garlic, oil and bread crumbs is top notch - a must try. Very small, homey atmosphere; friendly, courteous, prompt wait staff. we loved this dining experience.

“Superb dinner”

We had veal, lasagne etc. all six of us could not say enough about the food. Absolutely delicious!

They appeared to be more geared for couples or foursomes but our group was accommodated.

“quaint italian bistro with variety beyond standard italian restaurants”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 12, 2013 via mobile

The Razzo is adorned in Red and cream colors. The crowd is chatty, but not loud.

The wine selection is a variety of Italian, Chilean and Californian standards in red and white.

I chose a red table wine; the Citra, montepulciano D'Abruzzo. A single pass young table red with a touch of tannin. Citra wines are an inexpensive but good wine for when you want wine that is relaxing.

The server brought a mini loaf of warm bread. The loaf was baked onsite with a touch of sugar and rubbed with olive oil - giving the bread a butter-honey flavor.

the first course ordered was baked fennel. With the course came an Australian Shiraz named Rosemont. The dish was served hot with a cheese and cream sauce with garlic, grilled onion and mushrooms. The strong Citra, montepulciano D'Abruzzo of the creams and onions overwhelmed to fennel. Baking fennel and adding sauce is difficult to balance the flavor and the taste probably varies nightly. The dish was served with an additional six slices of bread.

The Rosemont had a moderate flavoring with a touch of oak. Less striking than Clo-Dubois.

The second course is mussels in a white wine sauce that featured fennel, kale and spicy Italian sausage. The mussels were soft. This time, though, the fennel was dominant. Separate the mussels had good flavor and texture, with the fennel and sausage, the flavor was strongly fennel with a touch of spiciness from the sausage and chops of garlic. The dish was served with a grilled slice of bread with garlic butter.

The third course was grilled zucchini with pine nuts. The grilling gave the zucchini a smoky flavor what complimented the pine nuts. The oil was a little heavy, and should be reduced, but it did not take away from the flavors. This was the best dish of the set.

Overall, terrific variety of food and wine.
Recommendations:
- Add more compelling wine
- Rely less on sugar, oil and creams to carry the dish. The flavor combinations used are terrific, but are buried in sauces and oils.
-Too much bread. The loafs are popular, but bread with each dish is too much.

“1st time here and VERY pleased!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 22, 2013

For our 40th anniversary we decided to go to Razzo..after hearing so many good things about it.
It's not as if this was a long drive - we just never seemed to be there in time for dinner.
Several friends raved about the restaurant, but they cautioned is to get there as close as possible to 5 p.m. - opening time. We parked at 5:20 and were seated immediately (it was a Sunday evening).
Sherrie and I started off with a shared Caesar salad - done just right. We both liked the Parmesan crackers in the salad..so much better than croutons.

Sherrie ordered the Marsala with Chicken and dug right in. It was so good that she didn't offer a bite to me (but I snuck one anyway). It was a bigger than average serving and we realized quickly that we wouldn't be able to finish it that night. Sherrie's review: best Chicken Marsala ever; mushrooms cooked perfectly.

Ross ordered the Penne Rictotta - pork sausage, fire roasted tomatoes & sweet basil - BIG portion and amazingly good. I loved the "tension" between the spicy tomatoes and the perfectly cooked pork sausage..along with sweet basil. I, too couldn't finish the dinner so we both had our food boxed.

Close to home, reasonably priced, great ambiance, great food, good service - we can't wait to try Razzo again!

“Superior food, outstanding service, well deserved reputation”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 18, 2013

On frequent Sunday afternoon trips to the Norfolk area we never miss stopping for a visit to Razzo. Opening at 5PM it's always SRO by 6PM so be there early. Joining the other reviewers comments on the excellent selection of authentic Italian main courses, I would suggest trying the roasted garlic – w/olives, peperonata, sundried tomatoes & goat cheese appetizer. This dish must have a secret "addictive" ingredient since it is what brings us back again and again to enjoy with the house Chianti. In addition to the talented kitchen, the servers deserve special recognition too since each one makes you feel like a welcomed guest. This is a great place not to be missed if in the Hampton Roads area.
