Sheraton Norfolk Waterside Hotel
Ranked #16 of 37 Hotels in Norfolk
Reviewed July 2, 2012

A friendly welcome by reception staff set the scene for an enjoyable overnight stay next to the water in Norfolk. Well located to various attractions and historic areas, there is plenty to see and do within a short walk of the hotel. A well appointed and clean room was provided with a good view of the river traffic. (Ask for a river view room.) A short walk to off site parking was the only negative, but you can pay extra for valet parking on site.

Room Tip: Ask for the river view.

I was not happy about having to pay for parking and still having to walk a mile to the hotel. There was no wifi in the rooms even though the ad says free wi-fi. The place was under staffed so there was a long line at check in . Some of the staff had attitude issues. The location and room cleanliness was good but spacing was terrible. Be prepared to pay for things you normally get for free at most hotels

While we truly regret any inconveniences that you encountered with our parking, we'd like to mention that valet parking is available as a convenience for our guests. For a future stay, our website is the best resource for gaining information about our services. While High Speed Internet Access is available in all guest rooms for a small fee, complimentary Wi-Fi is available in our lobby. We regret if these charges were not made clear and hope that we get the opportunity to welcome you back again. Thank you.

I tried finding a decent hotel for the price I was willing to pay in Virginia Beach and just couldn't find anything so I decided to cash in on some SPG points and stay at this hotel. The room was confortable, interesting view of the harbor (not like it's that exciting, but it is nice to see that instead of streets and other buildings). Parking was not that big of an issue as others seem to have made it out - I stayed from a Friday - Sunday and the parking was a weekend rate of $8. Not that bad. And we didn't have to cross any major roads. The parking garage is right next to the hotel and does require about a 4-5 minute walk (which you can walk some through the business building which uses the garage). It wasn't bad at all. My only complaints are somewhat minor, compared to bigger issues. On the night we checked in, a little after midnight, someone (who seemed to be a hotel staff because they had a walkie-talkie on them) was banging on the door next to us and trying to see if anyone was staying there. My husband and I thought it was kind of weird so we called down to the front desk but no one would answer the call. After spying through our door for five minutes, that person left. We were a little unsettled after that. Also, the AC made constant noise...as if there was a water pipe and someone above us was running water the whole time. I can sleep through a lot so we didn't call it in, but it was a little annoying. Other than that, as a SPG member who was using points, I wasn't informed about usage of the Club Lounge so I have no idea what that experience may be like. Oh, and for some reason, I've noticed a lot of Sheridans don't have fans in the bathrooms. I'm not sure why, but be ready for foggy mirrors. Even with my experience, I would stay here again if I needed to be in the area. For the SPG points it requires, it really isn't a bad deal for the area.

My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights for the Bayou Boogaloo Music and Cajun Food festival last week. A group of friends were traveling with us and also booked rooms at this hotel. Last year we stayed at a "festival partner" hotel but decided to try a new one this time. We're glad we did!

I'd read some negative reviews about this Sheraton, but we found it to be a very nice hotel. Don't know if it has been recently updated, but everything looked new and clean. Also, this hotel "feels" like a waterside hotel (unlike the "downtown" hotels, which don't have a "Norfolk" feel at all).

The walk to the festival area (or the marina) is mostly covered (and practically connected to the Sheraton). Most of the rooms have balconies and while ours had a city view, some overlook the harbor (will request that next time). Rooms were clean, quiet and well appointed (though a mini-fridge would have been nice). Good sized and well designed bathrooms, too.

There were several conferences and large group events going on, but check in and check out was still efficient (though our room wasn't ready until after 3pm) and room service was amazingly fast.

We ate at the restaurant AND ordered room service and both meals were excellent and well priced, especially for a chain hotel. We'll choose this hotel for our trip to Bayou Boogaloo again next year!

Only two negatives: One had to be a body builder to open the door to our balcony (needed new wheels or track) and also it seems ridiculous that hotels can still charge $10 per day for wifi. Luckily, we have smart phones so could still check email.

Room Tip: Corner rooms are larger (though they cost more).

We dropped lucky in Norfolk, and arrived there in the midst of the TallShips event, which was excellent. This hotel looks over the water so we had a fantastic view of the boats from our balcony. Great hotel. Very comfortable, and close to all downtown events. A good welcome and an excellent visit.

We stayed for several nights during Opsail 2012 in June. Room was well appointed and comfortable. Employees were friendly, helpful, & efficient. This was a very busy weekend but lobby & check-in folks were calm, not frenetic.

Room Tip: Waterside rooms are worth the extra $$. We were in 660 with great views out over the waterfront--mu...
